name three artists that you consider progressive? I am curious as to whether this term is personally subjective, is an actual genre defined by specific musical parameters, or is dependant on your country of origin and the trance scene therein?

right thats what i thought. so the sound of progressive is the sound of these artists. i love the music of son kite, minilogue, ticon, sun control species, antix, sensient, vibrasphere, phony orphants, iboga in general, plusquam in general. . .etc i must try out psyless groove and freq and tegma and oryx ive heard great things, but what i was curious about is what makes progressive progressive....is it slower BPM, is it minimalistic, does it build in a specific way? I was just thinking about it and i think that what really bundles these artists is their method(i cant describe what it is exactly that theyre doing) of inducing trance as opposed to full on.           ein chadash tachat hashemesh. there is nothing new under the sun. --kohelet.

Z,
easiest way is usually bpm and amount of notes of a bass on the bar. full on covers all of them(except for kick usually), proggy does not, usually 1 or 2 or a combination.

progressive to me also means that the track gets progressivly fuller with loops and sounds from its "naked" start - sensient sure takes his time to get to the "point" usually 4-5 minutes just to get to the meat of the track, but its well worth it and also yields killer super long mixes if u are a proggy dj.
ive heard proggy tracks like cpu's big in japan rmx that are 136 bpm and still destroy your brain, its not that - its the fashion of adding and substracting of the elements and the certain structure that defines it.

for me minimal isint' a subcategory of proggy(altho it did originate from it). There is full-on minimal, or atleast there could be. Theirs also obviously non-minimal progressive. And whatever, all these names are going to get even more confusing in a few years when people start mixing dark sequenced sounds with fullon basslines and goa melodies, in a progressive structure.

oh no you see, psychedelic trance has certain formula's and structures, and i'm afraid once you break those structures, you will no longer be writing psychedelic trance, and will have "heretic" branded on your forhead if you even DARE call it psychedelic trance.           We are all visitors to this time, this place. We are just passing through. Our purpose here is to observe, to learn, to grow, to love... and then we return home.

i think that perhaps ditch the concept of "label" or "genre" in favor of the concept of "descriptive term"

many of us have been through this all before.
the trance world has swirled around definitions for over a decade. only in the last 3 years or so has there been such rancour and and abject hatred of things so similar...

after the big glorious melodic 'goa' period the tracks got more minimal, techno crept in, house crept in, breaks crept in, etc...
after this period folks wanted to go big and glorious again but this time without the total melodic thing- and you had the beginnings of full on. (which was and still is a descriptive term to me- not a genre)

after certain patterns with this approach were codified by 'big names' (for psy trance that is)
like GMS then many others copied them and this made a whole genre or style. then you had the whole school of thought that wanted to leave that comfort zone and go more full powered- more intense, more twisted, more psychedelic... then you have the reaction to that- the school of thought that wants to slow down, take it easy, go groovy, etc...

these days there is more E and less A too...

and there was this solipse in south america back in 98 or so and all these folks came back doing coke etc...
so the drug scene probably plays at least some role in the musical tastes... not that everyone interested in this music has anything to do with drugs but there is at least the normal representation society at large has...
my thoughts...
