So I had a copied cassette back in '97 (I've lost it though..).

There was my first dip into chillout. There were a really sad piano track with children voices and wind (if I'm correct) in the background. You have that feeling like listening Liquid Mind... unfortunately I haven't found it. It was great.. if anybody know it pls write back who it is.. thx

fsol - lifeforms and some orbital made me feel like that the first few times.. now most ultimae stuff.. and a big big shpongle peak in the middle of the two - that took me straight to shpongle land with spinning vortexes and shpongle falls..

Sure I live in heavem.

With Ulrich Schnauss's albums.
Donno why, but the first time ive listen to his track happend to be the same period of bad times for me.

I could lay down and count falling tears while listening to Ulrich.

Duncan Sheik- On A High(Gabriel & Dresden Love From Humboldt Remix)
and
Secede - Leraine
had the same influences on me.

I'd been listening to so-called "crossover" music like Deep Forest, but the first all-chillout thing I heard that gave me a new genre of music to love was a mix compilation called Stoned...Chilled...Groove released in 1997, mixed by Coldcut and Strictly Kev of DJ Food. A masterpiece. One weekend it was on auto-reverse in the tape deck for 10 hours or so as we recovered from an all-nighter.

allthough not chillout or ambient, i think the oxygen album from jean michel jarre is quite ground breaking and has influenced the sound of today quite a lot.

really lovely and dreamy soft sound to that album.

i'd have to say vangelis.

Same here. One of the first CD's I ever got was Vangelis - 1492 - Conquest Of Paradise. Some beautiful chilled tracks on this release. Funny thing is that this was back in 1992/93, and I bought it because it was "in" amongst the kids at school to talk about this movie/Soundtrack. Man, 12 years old and the kids at school digged Vangelis, lol. I remember how proud I was when I got the CD from my step-father.

Oh, and of course. The synth tapes whith Popcorn ect ect. from the 70/80's

Shulman and this "scene" was the first chill chill exp. for me.

I can honestly say that the first ambient song i listened to was the first song on the new Shpongle album, "Nothing Lasts...But Nothing is Lost", followed by the rest of the album.

I couldn't stop listening, and it made me se the chill styles i'd been ignoring in a whole new light.

Eh I don't know. One of the first from this "scene" was Jörg On Mushroom - The Messenger. Heh it sounded so fucking good as did the rest of Shiva Space Technology's VA: Kum Haras. When I think about the track now, it's still fucking good, but somehow empty, as is the rest of Infected Mushroom's discography. Something missing there, and to think, there was a time I would have said that Classical Mushroom is the best album ever.

My first chillout enlightenment was, I think, when listening to Melt by Leftfield (in their excellent album Leftfield), it’s a beautiful chillout tune in a non-chillout album, that really really moved me… I don’t know how many people here know this track, yet it is definitely worth listening…

omg! I so want to listen to that VA. I've always loved the messenger my self (your right, it does sound a tad empty). And I'm very curiouse abut this VA. Want to sell it??
