I guess its not widespreed since lots of muslims consider music and dancing as "Haram". They figure it will send them to hell or something...

Narrated Abu Amir or Abu Malik Al Ashari that he heard the Prophet saying, "From among my followers there will be some people who will consider illegal sexual intercourse, the wearing of silk, the drinking of alcoholic drinks and the use of musical instruments, as lawful. And there will be some people who will stay near the side of a mountain and in the evening their shepherd will come to them with their sheep and ask them for something, but they will say to him, 'Return to us tomorrow.' Allah will destroy them during the night and will let the mountain fall on them, and He will transform the rest of them into monkeys and pigs and they will remain so till the Day of Resurrection."
[Sahih Al-Bukhari Vol.7 Hadith No.5590]

Narrated Abu Malik Al-Ashari:
"The Messenger (pbuh) of Allah (SWT) said, "Some people of my Ummah will drink wine, calling it by other than its real name, merriment will be made for them through the playing of musical instruments and the singing of lady singers. Allah will cleave the earth under them and turn others into monkeys and swines.
[Ibn Ma'jah Vol.5 Hadith No.4020]

well there is much psytrance in the arab world then in Chicago, for sure!

I was thinking along the same lines: Arabic producers need not live in Arabic countries. And the same argument in reverse: I am not sure Kuwaiti Indians would qualify as Arabic producers.

So, going back to your Chicago comment. Plenty of electronic music is produced in Detroit. It's also the largest Arabic community outside Middle East. I wonder if there is any overlap...

Anyway, I think many Rai songs are just asking for a trance remix.

So will keeping portraits in your house or (for men) wearing gold jewelry. You don't see that stopping too many people, do you?

People who live by every prescription in the Hadith are a fringe - not the mainstream. The city of Mekka and a Pushtu village do not represent one billion people. Or have you never heard of the Egyptian pop?

On another note,
saying there can be no psytrance because of Islam is about as stupid as saying that Jews can't have parties on Saturday because electronics are forbidden on the Sabbath, or saying that Christians can't have Sunday morning full-on because they need to be in church......
Think about it.

Do you know if anybody produced trance remixes of Rai or Chaabi tunes?

I've heard some Aroubia songs that are almost trance already - just need to add some electronic sounds. That would be a cool experiment.

(I don't use the word "Aroubia" as an insult, by the way)

I can't see Rai and trance together; the rhythm just doesn't seem to match...
On the other hand, I do like sanat musiği and some Persian new age Rumi together with my chillout...
