Colin, if you noticed i said "most", not all. 
I hang around for when people like you put out stuff. Look at who is logged in to this board right now though as i post this as "artist":

Back to the original question - I personally make music out of love to it. Because of some technical difficulties I didn't write anything for over a month now and it sucks, I wanna write!!!
Anyway, I also expect to get paid for it some way or the other. Releasing music, gigs. Otherwise I wouldn't spend so much money on the gear I buy, because money doesn't grow on trees as we all know.
