Dear Artists;

Due to all the controversy lately with labels and such, and all the outspoken individuals coming forward to demand what's theirs, I'm curious, do you make trance because you love to make trance, or do you make trance to make money?

When you come and yell at whoever you feel responsible for withholding payments or whatever, it really makes, at least me, feel that you're more concerned with the money than anything. Don't get me wrong, you deserve to be compensated. But is that the ONLY reason you make trance?

Now, I'm an aspiring artist myself, with a meager release roster (1 track, on a free Cosmic Flower compo). I don't have any desire to make any money off my music. If I happen to get paid, well, great! But I'm not concerned with the money. I've got a job, a good paying, rewarding job. It seems to me, to be shortsighted and almost selfish, to give up a job to make trance, expecting to be able to live on it. Some can, apparently, but the majority of us aren't going to be able to be well off just from releasing music.

I mean nothing but the highest respect to everyone contributing their talents to this STILL great and varied culture we call trance. These questions arose in my mind when I saw certain posts hereabouts. You have to understand, when you post a demand for payment, it almost seems like something from a Mafia movie...

Another thing I'd like to say, is that all the talk about psytrance being dead, used-up, been-there-done-that, disposable, comments like these, it seems to me, are only HELPING and indeed, accelerating the decay of our scene. If you believe that it is, indeed, dead, then all you're gonna see is death and the negative aspects. I don't know about the rest of the world, but around here things are FAR from dead. Great parties happen frequently, smiling individuals fill the dancefloors, great artists come and share their talents. Maybe, if you try and focus not on the bad, but the GOOD aspects of our scene still going strong, you'll not only have a lot more fun, but the scene as a whole may just reflect your positivity!

Okay. These are just a few cents of mine. Take them how you will, but realize I mean nothing but the best to you all!

Smile! Its FREE!           .

good trance is good trance regardless of reason
bad trance is bad trance inspite of reason
do you ask which tree the banana came from before eating it? its there eat it enjoy it what difference is it going to make if the artist makes music for money or makes it for bliss...as long as he/she makes it...listen to it and if u like it listen to it again and again and if u dont forget about it........a $100 bill can take you into trance and out of trance...it can buy you the magic carpet to ride on...and u can meet Elysium with 3 one dollar bills....MONEY & TRANCE can live in harmony with each other.MONEY IS THE ULTIMATE FORM OF TRANCE           When death comes to your doorstep, make sure you are alive

Although I purely make music out of love for the music I do get pissed off if a label doesn't keep their word and rip me off on money.

If I knew that the label was a non-profit operation I'm fine with not being paid, but usually the owners hope to get some kind of income and when they think that's more important than paying artists as promised it's not ok.
In that case it's a business deal even if the amounts involved is ridiculous and the fact might be that they label hardly makes profit.
They don't increase the royalty percentages if they make more profit than expected, and hence I don't see why I should accept anything less if they don't make enough profit.
Usually the pressing plant gets paid, the distributor gets paid and the shop gets paid, but because I love to make music I should be ok with nothing?

It's an annoying situation that the artists seems to be the lowest priority when it comes to the money generated from a release and that's one reason why I decided to start resonantearth.
It's not run for profit and sales is very abysmal, but the main thing is that it doesn't leave the bad after taste of being ripped off.
And one thing that is important to me is using an open license since I find it hard to accept releasing music under terms that makes fans and DJ's criminals.

So basically not getting paid for my music doesn't bother me at all, but not getting paid what I been promised by someone trying to run a business makes me angry.           (``·.¸(``·.¸(``·.¸¸.·`´)¸.·`´)¸.·`´)

this is more simple then it sounds ,in certin cases
SOMEONE is making money on the back of the artist
in this cases the demending for payment is an essence

but in cases the label is in ripoff because of low sells
and im not talking about non responsible amount of rellesses ,im talking about classic bad luck of label manager ,in this cases ,sometimes ,the artist should be more flexable with the label ,and in some cases ,pass the debt

the label manager is no mater what responsible
but in some cases shit heppens

btw ,i dont think any sirues artistic work exist without
some kind of commercialisem

perfect eqipment & sound are unforutanly costy

this is how world works

i have yet to see one who survives on Smiles!!

pretty hypothetical if u ask me ... it's only fair on our part as people who enjoy the music to keep it alive by supporting sales and gigs ... it's the only way we will get to hear and enjoy more creative material!!

quite simple .. give and take .. very much the way the world goes round!!

same thoughts here.... i participate in many free netlabel projects and such, but when some agreement to be on cd has been made or something of the sort ivolving money then i do want the people to act like pros.

I make music because if I didn't I'd burst.

I give things away because it makes me or someone else happy.

I sell things to make money.

Any more questions?

I agree.

But I also think that you CAN get some money by making good and quality Psy-Trance.
I'm not talking about the reason to do so. Just mentioning the possibility to get well paid.

But not with sales, perhaps. More with live performances and DJ sets. Maybe even by creating side projects with another artist that you consider to be a good one and unite "forces".

Regards!

what a bunch of hippy bullshit.
if you haven't noticed virtually none of the professional musicians that created this genre have anything to do with it anymore. boredom maybe....surely the fact you could make more flipping burgers factors in though, makes more sense to do something else with music.

i'm sure since 25% of the board logged in at any one time are "artists", some don't care about money, are really just messing around for fun like you are. most the real artists though with actual musical talent are long long gone.

I think you're ignoring the other 500% of users who don't log in to use the forum... anyway most of the professional musicians that created this genre are probably more fucked off with its stagnation and endless supply of crap music, and the ensuing difficulty in making anything of worth stand out amongst the dross - and the subsequent drop-off in sales caused by far far more music being released than there really ought to be considering the number of psytrancers actually buying CDs, which in turn leads to the need to get a real job to support the family they didn't have when they started out.

Some of us are still around though.

Anyway if there's no real talent in the scene any more, wtf are you still doing here? Or do you enjoy listening to rubbish music?           Mastering - http://mastering.OOOD.net :: www.is.gd/mastering
