I also wish you good luck main_frame!!

But... while I think their is a certain use for music distributed via cell phone, this concept doesn't hold much/any value for the consumer in my honest opinion. I really can't think of one reason I would buy something that I can only listen to on my phone when I have the choice of buying the vinyl/cd ...

I do think there is some niche value to the mobile phone concept...
a) one off, 'exclusive' songs only available via phone, eg. "Are you excited about ***'s new album. Well, now, for a limited time only get a 'sneak preview' of the best/first/whatever track... only via AU...for a limited time only.. the CD will be out next month" This would work I think...
b) Tour/gig exclusives... "Listen to a special message, and a special 'live mix' from, oh, let's say Intersys, on the way to/back from the Earth Energy party (shameless plug!!) Available for a limited time only!!!"

Those kind of things I could see shelling out some money for... but not for my regular music buying.

What do you think??

As for Hikari's comment "downloading days are coming". I agree, they are, and I'm curious as to how the Psy scene is shaping up.. I haven't been around Psy much recently, so just curious.

I know in the Techno/House scene, there are a few places, such as Beatport, Kompakt-Mp3, juno.co.uk, which have really started to get things going...
a) most important, licensing from a good good selection of labels, so you are able to find the music you want
b) reasonable pricing
c) good quality mp3, and in some cases (more and more), wave file, downloading..

Is this happening in the Psy scene yet... would Saikosounds or Psyshop be able to work out the licensing and go with this?? Would anyone else?? It seems like it would be a natural fit, because in my experience, Psy seems to be the most digitally (CD) based (though, I have seen Hikari hauling around his vinyl bag:)), and a downloaded wave file burnt to CD is the same as a bought CD.

Anyhow, curious to hear your thoughts...

And main_frame, sorry, not trying to be discouraging... but just giving my opinion as a consumer...

Well, prompted by my own post... checked on Beatport, there is some Psy-Trance, Spun Records seems to have some stuff up there... but yeah, Psy-Trance is still way under-represented.

But for $1.99 you can buy the 'Sirius Isness - Let's Get Started' single (I have no idea if this is a 'good example' of a cracking tune or not...but, anyhow..) on 320 kbps MP3, or for $2.99, the wave file... Ken, Hikari, anyone, is there more of this on the way?? The selection is terrible right now, but that could be rectified (changed)...

Sorry, after not posting here for months, I'm suddenly full of things to say...intelligent or otherwise

Actually, juno.co.uk has a more reasonable selection of Psy-Trance for download.. http://www.juno.co.uk/psy-goa-trance/

But, yes, yes, I know, I'm sure some of you still won't be able to find your favourite artist/label... still, it's getting there I think.

Also, in thinking about it, I guess main_frame is mostly trying to find the reactions of 'producers' to his idea... would they be interested in selling their tunes this way or not??

In the search for 'consumers', I don't think AU will be targetting 'music freaks' like ourselves who spend hours on end in trance discussion forums... they will be looking for the 'kids', and who knows, I have no idea what kids will/will not find interesting...

psychedelic trance download is the next thing.
I think this year will be the year that most labels realize the opportunity in the download market.
Since CD Sales seem to be falling every month, I think online labels will sooner or later become the winners.

There are a few Digital Download Retailers in Japan, this market should come to Japan very soon.

Sickboy -- sorry for not replying, i was just busy uploading the next batch of files among them a new section called BACK TO THE FUTURE in which phone users can get access to all Matsuri Production music, ie. Joujouka 1997 and Prana 1996. if you can get those tracks anywhere today, i will salute you. there is a certain strange tone to your posting, especially the more you realize whats going on in the download business, and i can accept any opinion but the one that try to guess why i am posting here, especially --- when a suggestion of "market test for producers" --- which i find a bit too much.

regardless i want to answer your posting just to give a clear idea to anyone who read this about whats going on, an insider point of you of a person who walk the walk, as they say... if you know what i mean.

A. your promotional ideas for unique doqnloads on mobile that can increase downloads for the sake of "special contents" are great, and i would love to adopt them, yet to start with, i would use the analogy of Vinyl Vs. CD back then when CDs were introduced. i imagine you would be a person who would have the opinion of "why do we need to listen to digitaly copied music when we can enjoy the real sound of the diamond niddle?" --- think about it for a sec-- there is a great reason for media to develop into a new format. back then it was to bypass the short lifetime of a record, to wrap it in a small package, and to allow more of it to be compacted into one disc shaped media. it took a few years to port the full human library into that format, and a long era of fully controlled system of production and distribution by the big phat record labels and distribution chanels we know as HMV, Virgin, Tower etc... enslaving all artists to it and creating global standards of price and packaging.

of the same reasons the media evolve again, out of the disc, finaly, and into the pure data realm. in that dimension, the ARTIST has way more control over his distribution, less costs, and wide variety of channels to distribute it. from MP3 -- the most unsecure, easily exploited early version we still use and soon will be gone of the planet, all the way to the secure, difgitaly signed, copyrighted and open market valued MP4, using a mobile phone in Jappan - which usually do forsee the future, and into other more easily comprehanded devices such as the nano pod. its all the same -- at the end --- a device that plays highly compressed file in the highest possible quality and stored in memory instead of real space.

weather you are part of the changing system or not, it is a matter of person decision and experience. im sure if you log on to X-Mode download service, and buy for very competative price tracks you can just not get in any shop, old or unreleased --- or just download to your phone high quality version of tracks you know you had once just way forgot where the damn cd is these days -- and in time have a library of thousands of tracks in your phone --- as well as have a very sleak bluetooth wireless sony headphones ---- you would look at the mobile phone in a completly different way. it might shock you to have that type of access to music anywhere, and the feeling you can have by accessing the database and listen to tracks while you have some dead time on the train, on the way to a party, or better on the way back ;-) --- to have your phone ring, play alarm rings, new email alerts, etc with your best of all time 15 seconds of your most beloved tracks. life become a bit more colorful, if you are a real music lover --- simple as that.

QUOTE; In the search for 'consumers', I don't think AU will be targetting 'music freaks' like ourselves who spend hours on end in trance discussion forums... they will be looking for the 'kids', and who knows, I have no idea what kids will/will not find interesting...
-------

as a person who speaks out of everyday experiencing the AU business model -- you have a very cloudy vision of whats really going on. AU is not targeting anyone in specific, the target music lovers, and allow the content providers to offer contents. if i would be a good ol' business man, i would not even bother with psy T and hit the J-Pop charts, selling ringtones to houndred million potential customers. no buddy -- the idea is different -- the idea is to allow this new platform at its infant stage to showcase Psy to everyone, and lets them choose what they like to listen to. im not a preacher that converts people to Psy religion, im just offering a new platform to all our community to offer the music --- wether is will be actually downloaded, thats a different story.

i dont try to buy expensive ads, or sign myy soul to a big ad agency --- i trust the power of Psy Trance to evolve in time into what it really is -- a perfect sound for a perfect -- not exist yet - media --- which we are almost seeing what it really is. even our MP4 -- with all its wonders, from some reason feel to me as a step before the big big thing, but by right now moving the whole library of magical sounds into MP4 -- i feel at the end of the line -- will be worth while the endless nights of encoding, enveoping for encoding, programming, and designing nano-size interfaces. dont hear me wrong, im nor complaing or try to get any simpaty --- i trully love my work and always been on the forfront of technology -- which eventually realized as a big big thing.. i get a kick of it, i guess more then i get rich from it ---- (you can just note yourself that in 2001 i got the first ever Trance Videoclips compilation DVD in Japan, at the same date Sony PS was out with a DVD player in it -- back then -- a damn modern life bigbang type technology) -- i solf 50 copies in the first month and it looked to me like i changed the world... hehehehe...

summing it all up -- its not about gold rush, or the creationg of the next EMI music, but it is about "going west" and exploring nw frontiers, about settelers mind without the killing of the indians on the way. move on in time, go with da flow, enjoy the emerging new technologies that brings the wonder we call music, especially the data form of digital music, into our ears and our minds at the right time and place we need it the most --- 24/7 in my case.

tiem will tell whats right and wrong -- as always --- but i would love to see the posting we run now taste like good old wine in a few years, man.
