chances are it has been brought up before, but i searched and couldnt find anything. so ill start one...

its really starting to make me mad. im 17 and i'd kill to get into a party, but it seems like all of them are +18 or +21. Even the small basement parties are like this (at least in the USA).

are the age limits because of drinks or something? or is it just because you dont want any "kids" running around? I just dont get it. Please answer and discuss..

nothing against people under 18 from my account, wish i could have them at my events.

let me try to explain some things:
most of the places that are established venues have certain licences in order to legitimize their existence in a legal manner. these licences and grants and requirements vary from firecode issues, to maximum occupancy, to dancing (cabaret laws) to building codes, to zone restrictions, to others i wont go into right now.
one of these codes are legality issues with minors. you must understand that if anyone lets you in to a place that doesnt have a specific license to operate as a "youth" center for gathering (youth clubs, arcades etc...) they are breaking the law. since the law is mostly upheld very stricly in the US, you are feeling it first hand.
the issue of 21+ and not "18 to enter/21+ to drink" is also a matter of licence. some venues who serve alcohol do not wish (or cannot) to implement the licence that lets the place operate with inviting 18+ but 21+ID or bracelet of some sort to identify... this is why this happens. its all a matter of money, politics, and the way thr government of your country has established and enforces the laws which it makes.

Now, to touch a bit on our genre, which is often accompanied by illegal activites... it would be most hazardous for an owner of a venue to break more then one rule at a time... he can "bend" some rules, but others may end up in a battle of: "is it worth it for me to do" kind of thing.

if you for example fall and break your hand (knock on wood) in a place where you technically werent suppose to be admitted into, then the owner has no case against you, and will have to pay your lawsuit if you sew him...
get my point?

I dont know about USA, but here it has to be 18 so sell alcohol which is a large income.

When I was 16-17 there was a place here in Stockholm where there were good parties very often and they where almost always 18. And what happened soon after I got 18? They had to close down. After that there have been a lot fewer parties here, it can pass months without any party at all...
(sorry if )

I guess you should just wait and hope that you can party as hell the next year.

My views on the subject:

This is a very old topic, but it still hurts. I'll never forget the horrible experience I had.

Check my reply in here.

That sums it up basically.

S0ft, be strong, you'll be 18 soon and it will all be over

Trance parties(esp' festivals) are known for the wide spectrum of ages.
we have seen so many times kids and infants in the parties and i think there should be NO age limit what so ever...i started to go to parties at 16 and i cant think of how it would be if i wasnt able to...one thing i do know! it wouldnt stop me from doing drugs or going crazy, it even may have gave me a good "safe" way to do it.
have a nice TRIP.

even though i'm over 18 (19 in 2 weeks thankyouverymuch) i'm expiriencing the same problem...
for some reason the good parties in tel aviv area are 23+ or even more so i happen to not-enter parties sometime (lucky i always make plan-B).
i think you should just wait for the summer for the nature parties where age is limitless.

If you are seeing age limits in the states, don't take it as an insult to your youth - it is purely for survival.

I threw parties for several years in Texas. We started off not even worrying about an age limit. Our parties were small, plus our crowd was very specific, so we considered outselves quite under the radar. Slowly, we started to see the authorities coming down on the more public events in the area. Valid or not, the focus of the crackdown was the young people.

For the last couple years we organized parties (2001 & 2002), we did impose age limits for our public events. 17+ for non-alcohol-serving venues, 18+ or 21+ for clubs & bars (at the discretion of the venue owner). I received some seriously hostile hate-mail from people who couldn't attend due to the age thing, but we did see it as a very necessary thing to keep our events from being shut down in a hostile environment. We never had any problems with police during our events, and I would like to think part of it had to do with having age limits. I would have rather had a few people hate me because they can't get into my event than have it shut down.

That is probably why you are seeing everything be 18+ or 21+ - it can save a lot of trouble with the police.

That being said, the private parties were a different story. We never had any sort of age limit on word-of-mouth events since you pretty much had to know somebody within the tight-knit community to be there. Also never a problem (with police or attendees).

s0ft, where are you located? Depending on where you are, there might be more private events that you could check out. If anything, you aren't too far from being 18, so just hang in there for a few more months.

hummm...thats crazy

in portugal there is no age restriction, any kid can go to a party (and its usual to see little kids with parents, like 7-14 yo)

but most parties (at least the good ones) are outdoors, in some clubs i suppose they would have to put some age restriction...anyway, it wouldn't be 18, 16 maximum (and theres no much control over it...)

Well i have nothing againt under 18's... the thing is what happens if they manage to get their hands on a cap of acid or a pill and it all goes horribly wrong ???

what then ???

ur gonna have to sit with coppers, parents lawyers... shite like that ....

IMO i dont think its such a good idea... i had to wait till i was old enouhg ... they can wait ... maybe a bit selfish but thats how i feel.....

a friend and i throw parties and were not willing to take that chance.

i am located in Ohio, USA. There are no parties to start with, and the few that i do hear about (over the net) have an age limit posted. Sometimes they don't even post the age limit, they let me find out when i get there (which really makes me mad because i have to travel to get to these places).

i guess i dont have too long to wait... but it's kill me!!!

Its a rough situation... here in Toronto our main problem re: age limit has to due with the venue situation... if it ain't outdoors, its gotta be in a licensed venue which is always 19+... so if its anything like that down in Ohio your options are simply: private party, or outdoor party.

One other point: here in my city all the overdoses and serious incidents in the scene here have been from people in their 20s, not reckless know-nothing "kids" who take too much I mention that since it is an oft-quoted fear, that "inexperienced" yoots will go too crazy, yet the reality is that its the overconfident veterans who go too far, usually... at least that's how it is here...

"make your own party" doesnt seem to be an option. i am the only psytrancer around these parts. Im not kidding. I have heard of one other, i think that organizes parties but hasnt had a party in a few years.

traveling seems to be the best option.
