+1 on Racks...pretty much anything I find remotely interesting be it effects chains or instruments I throw into a rack and save for later |

I figured tricks can be instruments as well...
this patch was originally copied from a Tom Cosm video but has been souped up with a meatier intro
http://www.filefront.com/15745359/Filter%20Sweep.adg
Instrument Rack with an operator and two analogs, has a bunch of fun macro knobs for really making the sound morph and twist...can be used as a one shot ramp, or you can use it as a lead type at very short note length. Non-macro elements that are especially important are the attack times of the respective devices - its currently set to either 1.25 or 2.25 seconds, so alter to taste. Additionally the reverb length from the tail needs to be shortened if you want to use it as a lead with 16/32 note lengths
I encourage others to post racks and whatnot - if possible keep all instruments used Ableton native so as to be used by others.
Not using an old lead/bass patch, but think someone else might benefit from it? throw it into an instrument rack, label some macro knobs and post it! I think this could be a really fun way to share sounds and techniques |

Hmm..Ableton says that it is 'broken'. Which version do you use?

this isn't really an ableton tip at all, but this plugin is fuckin great for 'standard' psy sounds - great fun to reverse engineer your own patches, or throw multiple presets on top of each other in an instrument rack....found it on some 4 year old thread...THANKS search function!

GREAT free presets for Ableton devices....some very very nice psy-compatible stuff in there...and the Covert Sequencer is really fun to play with too |

Gate the shit out of anything, everything *really* fast!
Say you have something, anything you would like to gate, go into the clip envelopes section, pick out something that will stutter the clip (I use mixer - volume a lot).
Set the quantize/grid of your clips window to a good setting, 16th and 32 notes work well for stuttering - GREAT shortcut for this is CTRL 1 and CTRL 2 - they slide the quantize/grid up or down one degree with each of those respective shorcuts - this saves so much time, no more shitty right clicking and selecting your grid.
Now, hit CTRL + B to activate your pen tool and draw the stutters in manually through the whole clip.
This technique also works well with unlinking your enevelope and looping it
but seriously, CTRL+1/2, and CTRL+B. great shortcuts and I hardly ever see anyone mention them.

First of all:
Big thanks willsanquil for all those links and tips.
Yesterday I started to experiment with clips and clip envelopes. Before I was only using the arrangement window and didnt know anything about clips.
This was the best dvice ever so far! Working with clips at the start seems to get much faster results...and with envelopes and effect chains there are some pretty nice possibilitys.
Only problem I have now: I git difficulties gertting the stuff I did in the session view with clips into the arrangement.
I could just copy the clips, but then I got the whole clips there and not only that part I looped and worked on with clip envelopes...
I tried to record stuff with a seperate audio track, but somehow that did not work very well....
Any hint on what the best way would be there? |

I am not exactly sure I understand the problems you encountered. But if you play your music in the session window with the record button on - it will copy everything into the arrangement window as it plays, each track separately. Is this what you were asking? |

Pretty sure maine coon nailed it - but yeah getting stuff from session to arrangement can be tricky - another thing you can try is to freeze a clip then bounce it. Keep in mind however that anytime you freeze and bounce in session view you get two passes on the bounce, meaning that if you freeze a 2 bar clip you'll get a 4 bar bounce.

willsanquil, can you repost that rack, I'm not finding the one you are referring to on the tom cosm site. Love tom cosm stuff, very informative and have learned a ton about ableton through him.
