As I see it, the music has of course independent existence, and it is a fact that most people here enjoy it also outside of a party. But, this is trance music, and to thoroughly experience its power, you need to experience it in a party, being in a trance state of mind/conchouisness.
I experience tracks differently at a party when I'm really trancing, I do not remember what I'm listening to (even when I know half of the tracks), it all blends together into one journey of sounds. For that you need to be tranced up- unfortunately, most people in parties today don't have a clue what it is to be in trance. That is because of the drugs- but that is another topic I may start one day.
I remember once in a party in the desert, Yuli played a morning set, I knew everyone of his tracks by heart, but if you'd ask me after the party what tracks he played in what order- you'll get no answer from me- I didn't hate a clue- I would probably just point you to the dust on my shoes and say: "ask them".

I personally think that every kind of music is related to its activities. For example its nice to listen to opera at home but the feeling of hearing opera live in a theatre is sure much more intensive. So you cant seperate trance music from trance parties they are two close related links.

The answer in my opinion is both..

If u come to play innovative music for musically evolved brains but almost no way to dance it, better move indoors and put some chairs, so ppl wont get tired standing

If u want 'em to dance too.. the music can b for the brain and the hips + GOOD production as well. This is quite rare to find though. Great example for this kind of music is Tim Healey known also as Electric Tease, Dallas Kiss or simply Quirk

You can't hear the music, all you hear is BOOM TSS BOOM TSS if thats what you think trance is for. MUSE-IC (inspired by muse) is what GOOD trance is. Thats why we call it TRANCE and not house. Also, it's inSPIRED meaning infusing the SPIRIT ... .this is simply the english launguage my friend ... if i can find more meaning in the words than you can in the music then you must not hear it at all...

Responding to Auspexx i think trance has valuable concepts in it worty of study... other than that, trance is such a new style it isn't in many diffrent scenes... but trance isn't just to get yo ass movin dog. We all know trance is useful as music. Because i consider good trance music. i consider house "music'" tracks. And a song hasn't been written for an eternity... Song = the elves of middle earth's music. A song is a peice of wisdom and a peice of a culture.... somthing that is traditional old, historical... ok i'll stop ramabling.
