Would getting 16gb ram instead of 8 make much difference in terms of cpu? I am not using cpu-heavy sample-based instruments, but I do use lots of tracks with softsynths and processing plugins per project.

Have read various opinions on this, so i thought i'll just ask the guys who produce same kind of music that i do
Thanks!

Thanks for replying:) and yes, the budget is limited in my case, but i've read some people saying that 8 ram is plenty in my case and it's mostly a matter of a good processor, so i'm thinking if i should spend more money on that instead?

not sure why more RAM should make any difference on the CPU. i guess upgrading CPU would make more of a difference then
more RAM will free up space for samples n such, 8gb being sufficient to me, though 16gb sure is a nice deal. anyways 8gb + VRAM results in enough space n swap being quit enough to work with, imho.

i upgraded an old macbook from 4gb to 8gb and have to say more RAM isnt that much of a big deal as the speed of the RAM is of more importance, which you cant change usually as the socket just takes one specific. though for the tracks i am able to use, the amount increased for sure.

so if its about using more tracks, RAM could be a solution (depending audio/midi), for the processing shouldnt make much of a difference though.

ive never heard any one who bought a 16 gig ram say they wished they'd bought 8 gig

and a SSD is a great speed up...

Make sure your motherboard supports it (I know, it's 2015, but my production studio only takes up to 4GB - and it still rocks )

More important than the size is the speed, so if the smaller one is faster, check it out first.

But, although you experience the system's performance as a whole, more or less ram won't affect the speed unless you top it off (and start going into the "swap" page file).. but the actual frequency response of the hardware does (so, cpu wants some data, it can get it faster from the ram)

SSD's will also speed it up, as least during load time, cause when the CPU ask for some data and it's not in the RAM, a page fault occurs and the system must go get it form the hard drive (so, this process would be sped up), and the CPU spends less time waiting for data.

But by no means would any of these speed up your CPU.. only the overall performance

If both ram are the same and only differences is the size.. bigger will be obsolete later (windows 7 already takes 1GB out of a clean installation, where a clean XP tool less than 128MB and if it's a tiny version it can go down to 64GB.. and in my experience windows 8 is an even bigger resource hog, but that's a whole different discussion I refuse to comment any more), so go for the bigger one.

But what I find more critical than any of that is the sound card - a good one can really reduce the latency of your system.
Also, a good and proper music production setup on your system can be way more valuable than any hardware you put in it

Google is your friend on this, there's nothing "psy-trance" related in the subject.           Super Banana Sauce http://www.soundcloud.com/knocz

Good CPU + Speedy Ram + SSD is the key to have a good pc to run without problems in our work.

More ram will improve the performance but you have to give attention in the speed of ram also.

Keep it mind that even you dont use sample based instruments operating system and other apps runs with your daw so... more ram more free ram for your daw.

If you a have a decent cpu already then upgrade your ram and spend some more cash to buy an ssd, but first check your motherboard if support it.           ...into the wild....
