Wonderwise is the debut album of the Overdream project. This project consists in two persons – Makkus and Dana – both from Ukraine, they have a particular way of making music, nothing to twisted, but extremely psychedelic. Their music is orientated to night time, but it can also be played during the day, since it fits very well both periods of the day.

But let us see what “Wonderwise” brings us:
Wonderwise (T1) is the track that gave name to the album. It starts with some tricks at the introduction, and it develops into some sharp, hypnotic sounds, and spooky melodies. It keeps on progressing, and we are introduced into the “trademark” leads of this project; if you know their music, you will certainly recognize their trademark. “Wonderland is severely damaged” – is a sample that appears at 3:41 and we hear several breaks on the music and interesting ideas – and among them: ascending and downing filters effects on the track. It has a BPM of 145, but because of the leads, it seems a faster. It is a good opener of the CD. Favourite.

The tune that follows is Sunrise Mind Trick (T2). This one almost leaves no room to breathe, because the kick and bass enter almost at the start of the track, and they have a strong, good presence. We can also hear, a male sample, an intriguing one I must say, almost someone speaking in a strange dialect. I like the groovy feeling I get from the percussive elements. The tune slows down a little bit at 2:45 minutes, and some notes downfall on the bass scale. I feel, in this tune, that we are presented with several distinct moments, in the measure, that, we have several times; up and down on the bass notes, and also the leads, although some are present through the whole track, some change in accordance with the bass work. It also ends with some pleasant melodies. Favourite.

Fuji Islands (T3), starts with some samples, and they seem kind of sixties publicity. Comparing with the two previous tracks, this one embraces hypnotic territories, in contradiction with the more explosive atmosphere the previous ones had created. There is, present in the first two minutes, some electrifying leads, which are not from this world – simply perfect! At about 3:40, we hear: “Wonderland is severely damaged” – is this a reference of this project to our magnificent planet being destroyed everyday? Well I don´t know, it can have many interpretations. After this sample we get a long part without any percussive elements, and a wicked lead is twisted, turned and squeezed, and when you think it will explode, the track keeps a “low profile” and keeps things steady and “relaxed” till the end. Favourite.

Extraterrestrial Travellers (T4) is a track composed, having in mind the space as a theme. There are some R2-D2´s sounds in here, and like in the previous tracks, the rhythm and dynamism is great. We can also hear on this tune, some ambiguous and vague sounds, creating a sensation of hypnotism, and some electric leads, which go other directions rather than the hypnotic path. I dig very much a drop at 3:10 minutes, where the tune kicks out and trashes in every direction possible, and after this twist, the music slows down a little bit and starts to explore other directions of sounds. At 5: 20 minutes the tracks stops the percussive elements and we are presented with some Spanish guitar notes, which will fade and give place to the mood that came before this little intrusion.

Mista Twista (T5) is the lady that follows. In this tune we can hear some few Goa trance elements, and a lead that “runs” through out the whole music. It has quite distinct moments either on the unique leads, either on the work on the percussive elements; some notes up some notes down on the bass line, but it is the main lead that creates the energy for the track.

Aqua Boga Djerba (T6) begins with an introspective kick, which slowly comes from the inside to the outside, to a more “regular” trance kick. There are also some metallic weird sounds, vague and long, creating an awareness of confusion and hypnotic realms. Of course we also have Overdream trademark, that banging sonorities, but most of the time in here we are immersed on the ritual of trance, where those metallic weirdo sounds became the only thing we hear. Also some chanting come in the moisture, taking the ritual even to stranger places. And if you pain attention you can hear the djambé in the background. At 6:00 minutes there are some guitar strings on the mixture. Favourite.

Daisy Lemonade (T7) keeps the hypnotic mood of the predecessor track, and it is introduced by some samples of the Bee movie. And one thing I find funny is that certain sounds that I hear, recall me the pinball game that usually comes on the Windows operative system. It is a track not connected with reality, with leads really strange and bizarre, making this one of the trippiest tunes of the whole CD, and it finishes with some electrifying leads out of this world!

Animated Mess (T8) detaches from the hypnotic territories from the previous tunes and embraces more banging madness – from electrifying leads to crazy breaks – you can find lots of ideas, and it never becomes boring this track; it possesses great energy and dynamic. At 5:48 there are again some strings in the mixture, and they remind me the Spanish guitar. Favourite.

Sancrosanct Toucan (T9) is the last track of this voyage. This last one explores other sonorities, different from everything that was presented on the other tunes. This one is smoother, more relaxed, and more harmonious, with some female chanting to go with – this is a twilight tune. It is almost like a decompression (not that it is necessary) from this “travelling”.

I´ve got no info on who made the mastering.

Also i´ve got no info on who made the artwork.

So to conclude my review, I just want to say, that this album has some exciting moments of banging music for the dance floor, as well it has aspects of music for inner travel. Although, I felt, sometimes some leads sounded too familiar, of course some may say it is their trademark, but in one or two tracks I felt resemblances on some leads, and it created a repetitiveness I disliked. Nevertheless this debut album was something I was expecting from sometime and my standards of good music were fulfilled. I recommend the buying of this album, because it has music almost for any timetable of a party - day, night - and I am sure it will please the listener.

nice review, fair and square and imho it says exactly what overdream's music is all about.

i'm 99% sure that the mastering was done by space cat. gonna confirm this and get back here with a 100% - same goes for the artwork, i have no idea who did it but i'm gonna try to get that info as well.

congratulations to makus and danna for their debut, and good luck with overdream in the present and future!

Thanks Andre, this is a really nice review.
One thing I guess you messed up while writing about T3 -

there is no such sample in the track. There is nothing about destroying the world =)

The mastering was done by Avi Algranati (diogo is correct), the cover is done by Marco from Switzerland (well, that is what label told us).
Anyway, thanks you Andre for your time and we hope everyone else will have fun listening the album just as you.

+ 1 !!

I'm almost pissing my pants at times because I'm so excited about the sound of this album. It's increadible in feel and power, really has that flavour I think most of us are seeking. This truly is the bOmb with acid shamanic lightning. The colours and motive of the cover-art by Rangoon sort of sais it all.

If I ever get a bunch of spare money to use on music, this is defiently on my to buy list
(too bad for me, but good on the folks that when that time comes, the CD is proparly sold out everywhere).
Until then, I'll enjoy my mp3 =)

Love the work of these two, and really like the idea of husband and wife working together

I have 2 copies of the album, and bought 4 copies as gifts for friends last Xmas.

A constant in my dj sets, always find the style is a great way to end a night/dark psy set on a positive note!!

Hoping big time a new album in the not to distant future hehe
I hate you, you hate me, we are all so hap hap happy!

After falling in love with the artist from their magic music released on Sky Gravity Vol. 1 & Vol 2, expected lil more outta the duo...

But great music nevertheless... If you haven't heard them before, pick up the copy blindly.

Much Love.
