To solipt1c: Your artist income numbers are completely wrong. Even if an artist would get 50% he doesn't get 50 % from the street price, but from the price the label charges which is between 7-8 Euros. And then you can take out expenses.

A normal deal is more around 18% - then maybe 20% taken out for packaging etc....

An artist selling 2000 copies makes something around 3000 - 3500 Euros not 7500 PSterling.

Ok so there's no confusion here's the "normal" terms for an artist'as royalties and advance:

Royalties:

Between 12 - 20% of the label price after deduction of artwork, production, packaging and transportation.

Other arrangements can be made depending on the artists and/or label.

Advance:

All depend on how known the artist is. Today the advances have been drastically reduced compared to 3-4 years ago and some labels even exploid new artists and dont pay them any advance.

Normal rates should be:

New artist: From 150 - 250 £.
Well-known: From 250 - 600 £.
Top artist: Way more !!!

Hope it will contribute to understand the royalty terms in our little scene.

For heavens sake

1. I admitted my numbers were not going to be accurate, and made it quite clear i was talking about the general PRINCIPLE that it is nothing new or unusual for artists to make as much money or more money from performance than recordings.

2. I NEVER said he took 50% of street price!! In fact I specifically said that he WOULDNT! I specifically went through and deducted expenses, taxes, distributors cut, shops cut, etc...

If people are going to rip my posts apart without even reading them I dont see the point in contributing to this forum anymore...           http://www.dartrecordings.co.uk/

Solipt1c, there is no need to feel so defensive. It's nothing personal.

It's just that your "estimate" of £7500, is quite far away from 3000 - 3500,- Euros!
That's all....... just numbers nothing personal...

This topic is already discussed in a hundred threads...
My opinion is: buy it, and support your favorite artist. Even if you can't buy it often, buy it.
Respect!

Ok... interesting point of views.

ShrOM - I know that my idea would not work practically. But let“s just say that we agree all of us that my suggestion would be theoretically funtional.

Jeff and Elysium Project, my answer to your replies; projects and acts that are not so famous are not playing at parties and festivals as you describe it - the organizers doesn“t want to take any risk. But if these acts could release their tracks for people to download them thrue the internet, it would be actually more people having access to their tracks - instead for the acts to go thrue the whole process of a record label...

If some organizers where willing to accept some of these promising newcomes, based on their releases or mixings that are available on the net - maybe it would accelerate the motivation of artists that are newstarted.

And for ShrOM - theoretically this idea would be funtional. Assume a scenario where MORE parties are organized; when more parties are organized probably the price for the parties will go down a little because there will be more parties for the crowd to attend to. Besides, that suites the economy of the crowd because the selection of parties will be more. The police and authorities are against this culture due to basic human prejudice. The prejudice isn“t vanished unless a human beeing has gone thrue or seen what "that" is actually is about. More parties will either lower the prejudice of the authorities or make the barriers and authorizations even harder for the organizers...

I think our main task for the future is to find an equilibrium between buying media and downloading it - and how these two factors will affect the parties and festivals.

nataraj : a difficult issue indeed.

Well, I'm not sure party organizers would have the time to get through the work of the considerable number of Psytrance artists or wannabies popping up everyday.

That's a kind of backlash : the Net offers the possibility to anyone to put his music online. ok, now, what's the ratio, one unknown talented guy lost in the cyberspace among how many crappy tracks ?

At the end of the day, you still have to make a selection, based on luck (alas...), cost and time involved.

I think the issue of overflowing productions is another key problem for our so little scene, along with the illegal file trading problem discussed here.
