When you goto a party and want to have a good time dancing among other things.. and you have a choice between 2 djs..

one dj is playing tracks that are not doing anything for you mentally and emotionally..yet he is technically perfect..

on the other hand you have a dj who is playing tracks that hit your heart and mind but is making some mistakes in volume levelling and eqing..

who do u go see??           You may think you can fly..but you better not try :)

oh nice little thread, was thinking about making a similer one, but this one should do!

I would defo listen to the nOOb with the sweet choice of music! Do doubt what so ever.

Side comment to the second alternative:

The DJ plays great music that hits your spots, but as mentioned, his DJ skills isn't prsay superb, he/shes not a great beatmatcher either. This lack of skill forces the nOOb to do more of a "chill-out" type of mixing where he/her mixes outro with intro's ect. Would the lack of constant beats for hours disturb you, or would it actualy be a welcoming approache and a flavour on your trip/dance?

.. Personaly, I think to beatmatch is a must, no doubt, but to mix intro with outro chill-out style is more then welcome if done cleaverly. I think it's tyrering and almost a bit annoying if the DJ is so good at beatmatching that theres a constant similer bbeat (especially full-on oriented music) pounds for hours.

hrm?

What would you prefer, 2 hours with hypersonic live set or 20 hours of goa gil dj set?           Everyone in the world is doing something without me

Haha what a question.

There should be a mix, good selection and skills. Only skills doesnt
do anything for me if I dont like the tracks.

And no skills but best tracks ? Also annoying if every mix is out of
beat, but yeah why not just use the chill out/in parts of tracks
then..

Most of the time I just go where the music is good anyway, if its bad,

Nr 2! Music is way more important than mixing, even tough bad mixing might stop the flow.

I dont mind fademixes at all. Actually, I often find them more interesting than many beatmixes, as psytooned said, it can get boring with the constant beat going on and on.

Thumbs up for more dynamics in psy!           http://www.myspace.com/fragletrollet

You can pull off some really trippy mixes by crossfading while pitchbending. Works wonderfully for both night chill and psy.

My votes for the nOObie, as long as he/she is confident about the track selection and is okay about not conforming to traditional beatmatching. Experimenting with beatmatching on stage and trainwrecking is a no-no.

If I were the promoter, I would not have booked the dj that can't mix.... but if he did end up playing, I would politely ask him to lend his tunes to the one that can mix.

Personally, shoddy mixing kinda does my head in, especially if the music is good, because it breaks the journey - the "trance" if you will

But then boring tunes also do the same

as basic idea , good music is more important then dj skills... obviously (for me)

dj skill u can learn pritty easy but to have good taste in music , much harder

btw , for beginer dj i suggest to make short intro outro mixes , it works great , much better then wrong beatmatch.

it definitely is a bummer hearing a mix that is totally off beat, but i think i'd rather have off beatmatching with good tunes rather than music that i don't enjoy.

Why not have good mixing AND good tunes? One option doesn't exclude the other ...           DJ pr0fane (Iboga Records) | Multiphase
