Exactly! I would like to refer to a wise old guy as 'baba'. Doesn't matter if he's one of 'em smokey tribe or gay!
But as mk47 said "this whle baba shiva boom peace respect gayness reeks of fakeness".. and I feel it's true.

your looking to deep into it.......
it's generally used as an amicable, respectful way of expressing good will to someone.
just take it for what it is or of course you can be like the majority and be another cynic

Might I add some form of address to others that is not always meant in a friendly way but is part of the idiom of my hometown Hamburg and in some way means the same:
"Alder", referring to the Standard German word "Alter" meaning an old guy, but with less respect as "Baba" does. But between friends this is something like "dude" in English.
If you want to address someone, you say "Ey, Alder". If you've ever been around psy festivals in Northern Germany you already have heard it a lot.
A newer word from the same region is "Digger" which refers to "Dicker" in Standard German meaning a fat guy. Well, I prefer "Alder" because the latter has much less respect in it.
So, if you really wanna fit in the Northern German scene and make some friends at the dancefloor by praising the sound that's just being played, try to learn this phrase:
"Ey, Alder, derbe, Digger, fedde Base am Start hier."
That'll bring some good loughs at you.
Of course ironically, Pete

we use "altä" in swissgerman too, but baba is more taking over in "psyscene", as altä somewhat has a cliché ring to it.
