where is the spirit of goa / trance?

Sometimes i ask myself where the spirit of goa / trance got to...
i can remember the time where the music beamed me into another reality...
but now...?
the music get´s wicked and the spirit faded away more and more...
where are the tracks that are telling storys?
where are the tracks that make the universe concrete?
today we have mostly "only dancing" music... and the people only see a spirit
coz they have too much drugs in their heads...
please... spirit of goa / trance... come back again...
let me fly...

the age of goa is over (imho) and that is a good thing. goa was never my cup of tea. now we have gr8 things like LISH, THE DELTA , HUJABOY and more and more....
that is the new spirit.

Right now you can dig some progressive, techtrance, full-on, minimal, whatever. The energies in todays music offer a new definition for the word trance - using monotic beats and rhythms in a deeper way than ever before (well, in trance, Plastikman can teach all of the trance artists a thing or two about minimalism and progression, Liebing about techno power, but hey, they don't make trance). Unfortunately, I don't think that the old goa style and energies should be forgotten quite yet - that music still has a lot of places to go which haven't been visited yet.

Good question. Its a bit lost due to an overdose of opportunistic bandwagonjumpers resulting in a scene where a pioneer like Etnica for example doesn't sound that much different than the majority of new acts. The emphasis is nowadays on 'hypnotic', primarily through the 'drive' that should do the trick (kickdrum and bass) or energy as Kaz describes it.
604 is more hallucinogetic, seeking for a more visual experience. This surely isn't dead but the most convincing stuff simply comes from the (psy)ambient acts and not the full-on ones. Shpongle does a nice job of pushing the psychedelic(which was historically always about the visual side)borders hereby heavily borrowing melodic stuff from other sources than the 303.
What kinda comes close imo in the faster segment is Chi_ADs Pathfinder track (original and remix) but its really rare. Such stuff definately appeals more to me than what is 'hot' nowadays but the ones that could pull it off are too busy 'doing' what the market, the promoters and the label owners demand. |

The spirit of goa is inside each and everyone of us. It has not faded. Look closer. And about people seeing spirits because theyve a head full of drugs.... Um... isnt this psychedelic music my friend?
Search deeper. Youll find the answers. It may not be a unified attitude, but it definately can be strong in one individual.

I've started to miss the spirit too... so what can you do? Get off your couch and become more than a listener, for starters!  produce some music with the good spirit, or share it with others. Start up a label even, if you feel comfortable with bank loans or if you have enough money and some know-how. That's what I've done at least... if the project recieves support I'll be sure to follow the same line and continue to release melodic goa trance that promotes that old feeling of spiritual awakening
Email me if you'd like to know any more... I'd rather not pollute this thread with further promotion, even though its very on-topic so to speak in a few days I'll post some full infos in the promotional forum for all to see publically.
