no now seriously, not everyone think of psy and goa as a diferent thing...

In many coutries its exactly the same thing...

But some ppl tend to call goa to the more old style melodic stuff and psy to the more recent tweaked full on sounds...In that case I totally agree with Syntax, psytrance with a touch of goa definetelly suits my taste!:)

imo most full on and most progressive trance and definetly most minimal/tech trance don't qualify as psytrance (read psychedelic trance) but simply as trance just like that dirty Dj Tiesto stuff or Darude material..

goa i see as old name to psytrance..           "The dinosaurs became extinct because they didn't have a space program."

i've gotta say... i just don't "feel" goa classics like i used to. they're just too MUCH sometimes, with the screaming synths and nightmare vibes. part of the problem is that i've been mixing for almost 5 years now, and old goa tracks aren't any fun to mix. their structures make it very hard to do longer mixes that sound good. i also find that the old kick drums are lacking that modern weight, which is useful for when i mix psy with techno and trance.

but i also recognize that 9/10 of modern "psy" isn't very psychedelic. it's actually closer to UK hardtrance than anything, which is slightly disturbing. the Scandos are still making mad music, but hardly anything "psy" comes out of Israel.

i think the world has just moved on... E has taken over, and few people i know do LSD any more. so the music has changed to be better for dancing.

hummm.. i don't agree with you duodenumz when u say 9/10 modern psy trance aren't psychedelic, they may be more mathematic and less crazy and tweaked, but definetelly i think its really diferent from hardtrance.

Im in the uk, and the only thing u hear in here in big clubs is either the comercial shit, or hardtrance and eurotrance, and besides sometimes the basics (kick, snares, hi hats), the notes arranjements are completelly diferent, the ibiza feeling is completelly diferent of the psy feeling ( im not talking about the movement, im talking about what you feel when u hear a psy or a hardhouse track...)

i don't think a track needs to be all twisted to be psychedelic...

i totally agree with duodenumz.. most trance released today just simply isn't psychedelic.. therefore it's just trance not psytrance..           "The dinosaurs became extinct because they didn't have a space program."

me takin' things a little offtopic here but..

think of a little older psytrance track.. say from 1998

it might go something like this:

intro.. track gets its shape.. opening door sound.. back to kinda repeative shape.. then a sample starts on top of it.. close your eyes, close your eyes, close your eyes, close your eyes, close your eyes, clooooooose youuuuuuuuuuuuuur eyyyyyyyesssss, AND FLY! then things get really weird and there are melodies all around the place... things go like this till the track slowly ends..

now think of regular 2003 full on track..

a 10 second intro just like it says in the "fool on production for dummies" ..then that rolling bassline + kick thingy.. slowly some other things join in.. then that cheesy sample.. LETS DO DRUGS AND STOMP.. then BOOM BOOM BOOM.. then the track ends..

..that's how i see it..           "The dinosaurs became extinct because they didn't have a space program."

well, of course i'm speaking in generalities, but i maintain that modern psy is much closer to UK hardtrance than the classic psy style. fat kickdrums, clean production, fairly predictable structures, and so forth. i'm not saying i dislike modern psy, but it is far different than the music we were hearing in the mid-90s. as i said, as a DJ i *prefer* the modern sounds.

but compare Phreaky - "Tornado" to something by one of the 342526 full-on clones and you'll hear how far from the source modern psy is.

I agree completely with you, duodenumz, especially about goa stuff getting too squeaky and screechy. It can be a real room-clearer. What I've come to know as psytrance almost compels you to dance, even if you don't much feel like it!
You're spot on about the music changing to suit the pill-munchers, and the Scandoes still making mad music.

Proper UK hardtrance is wicked though, it's really dirty, totally analogue and it kicks ass, stuff like VCF recordings, bordering on Acid-Tek is amazing. Admittedly some of it sucks a bit too, but the best stuff... Oh man! Some of it has an acid-techy beat and a trance bassline, loads of 303s, layers upon layers of sound and it totally warps your head. A bit like acid-tek but less minimal. You do NOT hear it in big clubs, except maybe the backroom at Escape from Samsara (but I've not been there for about 5 or 6 years, they used to play that sort of thing). Not to be confused with commercial cheese you hear.

I'd generally choose psy over goa, if the differences are enough to be worth picking up on, but if I'm in the mood a bit of goa's OK.
