Hello Psyheads

Ok, I have this question for you which could be usefull for other aspiring Producers too.

In general to become good at one thing, may it be in science, literature, art and so on, the general word is PRACTICE. Lots of practice is the general keyword for growing.

That is comon knowlede for everyone, I think.

But the question here is to part a big goal into smaller objectives to be a better producer.

So here are the reparted questions for a good daily practice that I can imagine from my little experience (if some usefull practice is not mentioned, please add it):

1 - What should be done to be better at melody writing?
2 - What are good percussion learning practices?
3 - Making your own original synth sounds?
4 - How to improve the workflow?
5 - What makes a better musik story teller?
6 - How to train mixing?

I don't want to go into mastering because that is a completely diferent world.

Hope this questions are usefull for the community as they are for me
Cheers.            Analysis and Organization for Refinement

...and practise, practise, practise. Like with anything skilful/creative, you need to put in the hours to get good at it. There are no shortcuts to expertise, and it often takes years of doing stuff you're not happy with before you become skilful enough to create work you can be properly proud of.           Mastering - http://mastering.OOOD.net :: www.is.gd/mastering

ahahha,

I guesed that the answer would be like that. But was worth trying.
As for all those questions, my answer is always the best.
So:
1 - Learn about harmony and chord progressions and practice them.
2 - Same as the above, plus some experimentation.
3 - Make lots of presets, samples and save them all in a library.
4 - Know everything about your DAW, shortcuts and make a decent template.
5 - Read some fairy tails
6 - Get someone to tell you some decent tips and open your ears.

Afterwards, just do music, keep on doing it. Don't look for instant gratification (which can be manifested by asking for sensless feedback) and finish a work until you are happy with it.            Analysis and Organization for Refinement

ello,
here is some points which popped in my head right now, maybe i miss a few, but anyway:

- melody wriritng: when i started writing music, i used to just put random notes, eventually i saw that some notes flow better with each other, they fit perfectly, what i realised was , the sound flows when you have proper chord progression and your notes are harmonically correct,, so i suggest the student to go to music school , learn the basic,or get a sound enggerneering course or something,, and learn all of it! it helps because you get knowledge on proper harmonics and then u can then use it in your own way.

-percussion : the only way to flow with percussions is to practice 'real' percussive instruments !! if you learn how to play the drums for say 2 months,, you will start putting the same flow in your digital drums! if u djembe, u will use same patterns, beats inyour digital constructions as well!! so best way to flow digitally is to play with real instruments,, and you will get the flow going in your percusive VST's plugin for sure!

-orignal synth sounds: most people get all the vst's / hardware stnths they can!! collect them all !! and then never touch them. its best if you have just a FEW good vst's/synths ... and learn them in and out, properly, learn what each knob does , learn each control variable possible, learn all different possible fx chains on 1 sound possible, get a midi controller, and tweek the fuk out of the 1 synth , virtual synth can get boring,, but if u have real knobs to twist n play with,, it makes life much more interesting, and makes learning n experimenting fun! so get few good synths/vsts.. and learn them properly to get orignal ssynth sounds.

-workflow: to improve workflow, it is best to get organised,, organise all your files, all your vst's , all you fx, all your projects,,, then organise your ' project/track' you are working on..properly.. percussion in 1 place, all synths 1 place, all bass 1 place,, all melodies 1 place.... get organised.once you organise yourself you know exactly where everything is, so it makes life much easier, it becomes like a template for your future projects,, so then for next track you have a clear path, and you move smoothly,, also helps if your "life" is organised properly.

-story telling:i guess a good story teller is some 1 who can first come up with aa 'story' , make all the ' characters' in the story alive , and tells the story with real "emotion" , laughter/humor/sadness/love etc etc , and add's his own personal twist or individuality for all the characters in the story.

-mixin:i guess best way would be to experiment with ad lot of genre's of sound, make all sorts , not only in psy (chilout,dark,fullon,hi-tech,forest,oldskool,proggy ,,,etc etc) .... but experiment with other genre's also.... classical,hip-hop,rock, drum n bass...etc etc... the more u experiment,, you will practice differenrt structures, and will hive you different perspectives on different styles of mixin.

also helps the artist grow if he is growing/maturing in his real life

Let’s take this for the sake of a constructive argument.

What I read from 2/3 of you is just work and practice. So let me give a practical and not so intellectual example (please don't read this as a criticism, these are just my honest thoughts about the subject):

Let’s consider that you are a person who just came out from the ordinary school (so you should be 18 years old) and that you have the idea and dream to build a nice house. As you don't know to build a house the most reasonable thing to do is to look out for someone who has experience in building and ask him if you could learn something about the subject. The first thing you will be doing is the dirty hard work, that the more experienced workers don't want to do, like mixing the cement, carrying buckets and to push wheelbarrows. Afterwards you scale too upper levels and start to learn about the necessary structures that will make the house stable and so on. In all that you work and practice as you say, but the essential thing is that you are supervised and pointed out in the right direction. If you began to work on a house without that knowledge acquired from your "master" that the most probable thing is that you would spend a lot of money in material and spend years of valuable time on building a trembling shack.

So I ask you for the right direction, and please don't understand me wrong, there are no shortcuts for this kind of project. That would be like starting to build the roof of the house before the rest.
In other words, how to build a resistant and stable musical basis (what every good musician has).

For the rest, once you know the essence of building a house, it is up to you how you want it to look and decorate. The same for music, once you know the basis, use them to be as creative as you want.

I think everything lies in the time you spend in the studio, but the best practice I think, or what helped me, is to make millions of songs, fuck making loops and just 3 minutes of the track, that way you practice every aspect of production, you practice synthesis, you practice composition of a track, you practice the formula of the style your making , you practice you music skills ( chords, notes progression) you practice mixing, and finishing tracks you practice every aspect of making a track, make every bass different every kick, so you practice making kick and bass in every track , try to always use different plugs and different tricks different settings , so you can evolve in every song you make.

With the time you will make your songs faster and faster, until you get a bad ass rhythm of making a track in 3 days with 120 channels, if you only dedicate your time and energy in it, but basically there are not fast shortcuts ,if u want to be good, U will have to spend years inside your room (studio) until you become a type of nerdy freaky dude, that only comes out at night hahah, true story hehe,

Watch a lot tutorials in internet, read a lot, about mixing, practice your chords and scales in a midi controller or piano, that helped me a lot, I try to learn the chords and then tried to play rock or pop songs or whatever floats your boat, and try to play the song in the piano o midi controller and your music skills get a lot better really fast! That help me!! pace!!.
