the feeling of letting go of a vinyl is different from the feeling you get when pressing the play button on a cd....
the feeling of touching the vinyl for a sec is different then the feeling of turning the jog on a cd...
the sound is different but not in a way that you can say "this is from vinyl, this is not", at least not for me...
so thats it, its not about what you give (good sound, bad sound ) , its a different feeling for you (the dj).
also i feel there is different music in cd's and vinyl, my style comes easily on vinyl, i guess full on lovers will have to settle for yoyo and SST releases on vinyl only.
p.s. vinyls are much much more addictive. |

I prefer vinyl but it is not a choice made for sound quality... the music is far more physically substantial, not to mention collectable (unlike easily copied and mass-produced CDs). The feel is purely a personal thing... though for some there is a conception that vinyl is an 'image' thing (not for me, but given how egotistical and image-oriented some DJs are - quite possible!)..
I have lots of respect for labels that still release vinyl... its far tougher to get it right, costs more, takes more to ship, doesn't sell as well, etc... a constant struggle in other words.
Extremists in this CD vs Vinyl debate need to remember that no one on the dancefloor can tell or would care, in most cases... |

I also prefer vinyl/phono, because it's much more precise, in 2 reasons:
the pitch is more precise (sometimes on cdjs 1.2 is too slow, and 1.3 is too fast)
and when you push or slow down vinyl, you can do it much more precisely then on jog because of, as Avishay said, the touch and feelling
but negative side is that vynil is pretty expensive (for our Croatian standards)

as far as i can tell, it is because vinyl can be a real pain in the ass when it comes to playing outside, especially in hot or dusty conditions. vinyl is fine if you are inside or at a club, but from my own experience it is not very well suited to adverse outdoor conditions and can very easily be ruined by the elements. i have used vinyl for many years, and have only started using cds within the last year or so. i have really enjoyed getting used to mixing with cds, as using cdj-100s are not all that different from the feel of an sl-1200mk2 (imho), but i would never want to part with my vinyl ever. there is just something about 12" vinyl that a cd cannot duplicate... it has a feel all it's own, and requires it's own skill. that, and it smells absolutely wonderful when you pull a record out of it's sleeve for the first time!

i started spinning on vinyl, and i definetly agree there is something nice about the "throw off" on vinyl, these days, especially spinning full on its hard to keep up with all the music out there, its not possible on vinyl...thats the only reason i sold my 1200's for cdj100S's....the 100's are fine tho...my only gripe with them is what hip said abou the pitch..i wish you could adjust the increments.....
the music is made digitally...it should be played digitally, thats what one other dj told me and it makes sense...cd quality is a lot better than vinyl, altho vinyl sounds "fuller" for some reason... |

well, i played in alot of outdoor parties with 12" and nothing went wrong with them.
and i also know few non trance djs that still do that, huge techno raves and shit...
im not sure its the reason

imo the pitch resolution problem is the biggest problem with cdjs.. on the pionerr 750s (its their cost in ££'s ) you can get it up to 0.5% which is pretty good, of course since it is a % you get better resolution at slower tempos.. also it is mostly possible to compensate for the inexactness of the pitch on cdjs by being sly with the jog wheel, but it is not ideal.

As a dj who played and plays on most of the above devices (including dats) I can tell you that for me nothing can replace the wonderful feeling of a vinyl in the hand, its much more than quality or looks or whatever, its about fun! Its simply pure fun to play on turntables and mostly I agree with Avishay on the feeling thing, no Jog can replace the touch of releasing a vinyl (except the jog on the pioneer cdj1000 (they imitated it almost perfectly)

u must be kidding...
vinyl is just for the impression/show!
unless u play rap music which rap is all about impressions...
after few shows with gramophone it get on the nerve , specially in outdoor parties ! (for me at least)
no matter what u say ,it is all about impression finally.
one thing is nice , it make good aura in the show.
what if everyone of us will think positive about peace ?

we know that you feel that you know more than these guys, but Nahimoff has been DJing in parties before you ever heard trance, so give the guy some credit - he knows what he's talking about. And notice techno DJs (who are too busy using loops and flowing with the technique and crowd than to just show off) tend to prefer vinyls as well. I myself haven't used them outside of records shops, and I must say that I trust Tsuyoshi's DJing preferences (vinyl, only) more than I do most opinions.
If it was all about pose, the trance scene doesn't have any.

I know vinyls are better. The sound is much more "alive".
But, it's less compact. Takes more place and scratches as easily as regular c.ds.

Kaz : psytrance is NOT techno (techno is much more like house than trance ), stick it to your mind !
the halo between psytrance party and techno party is totally different !
I like to play vinyls at home ,just for the fun.
I feel clumsy when I should come with vinyls to psytrance shows...(uncomfortable size... damnit!)
all in all I like vinyls (at home!):) and I play CDs because I like to play with digits and its much more comfortable...
what if everyone of us will think positive about peace ?
