Future Sound Theory - Various Artists

compiled and mixed by MattB

This latest compilation by Celestial Dragon, "Future Sound Theory" presents no less than twelve standout tracks ranging in scope from organic sound sculpture to electro dub to melodic glitch. Such an eclectic mix is easily held together by an amazing cross section of the most cutting edge producers in electronic music today... stunning contributions from Gaudi, Testa, Ochre, Monolake, edIT, RaNDom, EOX, Adron, Electrypnose, Nalepa, Gel Sol and Dublicate make this mix a truly international collection of talent.

The organic percussive elements of opening track "Lumumba" (Antonio Testa) set the tone for a journey into an uncharted sound world, leading straight into Ochre's "Esign", which can only be described as a beautiful alien soundscape drifting directly into the subconscious. "Juste Pour Toi" by Electrypnose sets the harmonic and rhythmic stage for the inimitable dub stylings of Gaudi, representing here with "Rain In Dub", which in this context becomes something of a mind-bender.

Dublicate's "Peace", Gel Sol's "Cool Sweet Awesome Yay!" and Nalepa's "Pomme Granite Dub" seamlessly carry the dub flavour uninterrupted, with a hint of the glitch elements to come. "Digitalis" by Monolake picks up the tempo and establishes the trippier elements leading into "Hybrid" care of Tokyo scene stalwarts RaNDom.

Rounding out the mix, edIT's "Laundry" is a tidal wave of audio delight, pushing the tempo and the brain into spirals. "Aeon" by EOX introduces some of the most organic digital elements in the mix, to set the stage for Adron's "Klo", which is simply one of the most understated and beautiful pieces of music you will find. As the title suggests, Future Sound Theory represents cutting edge production values, and it would be fair to say that a compilation of this calibre rarely comes along. It is impressive that so many noted producers have put forth many excellent tracks for the same project. The diversity and range of the music here has been coaxed into an incredibly cohesive mix care of Matt B, and this would be a worthy addition to any serious chill-out collection.

CDREC-07
digipak cd
mixed by Matt.b
Release Date: 2006-10-20

01 Lumumba Antonio Testa
02 Esign Ochre
03 Juste Pour Toi Electrypnose
04 Rain In Dub Gaudi
05 Peace Dublicate
06 Cool Sweet Awesome Yay! Gel Sol
07 Pomme Granite Dub Nalepa
08 Digitalis Monolake
09 Hybrid (Tokyo Elite Version) RaNDom
10 Laundry Edit
11 Aeon EOX
12 Klo Adron

1. we get a graceful intro and begin feeling the pulse of the earth thru some nice drum n drone flavor, very calming but at the same time hinting that we are about to journey... Testa is prolific.

2. and we fly up and away into a warbling soundcloud, shifting and reflecting dreams and light, no beats here, it is again, a prelude. Ochre is a new name for me, this is a calm introduction to this artists work.

3. vin's Electrypnose has developed a very distinct chillout style ive been enjoying his recent album "subliminal melancholies"... another dreamspace tune, subtle beatspace and rich pads that resonate like bells to fill the space with warmth, and getting digital and a bit more crispy as it goes, then hints at his classical training, a great transition...

4. into a fresh dub by master Gaudi, bringing the distinct beat and bass that lets us know for sure the dub has begun. proper layering and fx create a thick zone in which to float, nuff said!

5. plenty of room inbetween trax here, we get a moment to tripout on slightly glitched skankin, great sounds come and go, almost a playful atmosphere here, not too busy, just enough and plenty, really captures the spirit of dubmusic for me, relax and sink in to the soundscape... dublicate is another new artist to me, hope to hear more from them...

6. a nice pulsing beat here, nothin too crazy, but solid nonetheless. a nice traveling sort of tune. gets deeper and a bit acidy as it goes, the pads really creating a mystery. last minute is huge. gel-sol had a release on e:mit last year but i still havent heard it...

7. this track is beatmatched right in with the outro of the last one. we get a kickdrum dubtrack here, complete with nalepa's trademark soundcreation skillz. fresh and tight, thats what im talking about. a couple glitched out rewindtricks and bam! we are dripping sideways, walking backwards, dancing upsidedown. nice tune to get lost in, reminds me of plastikman. a couple real tripped out soundmelts take you by the brain and swing you around with a smile...

8. monolake has a refined individual sound as well, miniature clockwork idm that rolls. depth charges are sent down into the machine, it vibrates and refracts pulses of static and echos the misty landscape it hovers over effortlessly. things get more mental as the exploration continues...

9. RaNDom is matt.b and ian hartley, from tokyo. this tune is up in ya face more than the rest, with a strong snare hit, and deep ass bassline that gets cut up and glitched some towards the end... which leads perfectly into

10. edit. part of what they call the Glitch Mob out on the west coast of USA, he is well known for totally melting minds and shaking asses. this tune is one of the best from his debut album 'crying over pros for no reason' which came out on Planet Mu 2004. one thing i loved about this album was that even though it was very similar throughout, mashing hip-hoppish beats into mostly danceable glitchmesses, the keys and pads and themes keep it listenable and even create tunes that can be remembered which is one thing i find missing from a lot of super-glitched out stuff. this tune is sorta sad overall, seems to remind me of rainy days and computers trying to communicate. it finally breathes at the end, washing smoothly into...

11. another new artist to me, EOX. who completely spaces things out for a moment before taking us back into the machine. but doneso with hints at space... liquidy drips and ringing tones create 3-D ideas, as the experimental tune morphs and moves along...

12. Adron finishes it off deeply, with crispy rhythm section, its got similar tones and themes to the rena jones album, psy-dm with richness and warmth.

overall im excited about this cd. hopefully my descriptions are detailed to express the variety and specificity of this collection of tunes. it is nice to listen thru as it creates a well told story... but the tracks could easily be taken out of context for dj's looking for great tunes to add to a mix.
