VA - A day after... - ZMA Records
ZMA CD 023 September 2004

01 - Sun Control Species - Structure 135bpm

02 - FREq - Cosmic nature 140bpm

03 - Krama Vs Castell - Ministry of fantasy 135bpm

04 - Heliotrope - Lazy bones 138bpm

05 - Sensum - Let's turn on 141bpm

06 - Segment - We sold our souls - Ololiuqui rmx 138bpm

07 - FREq Vs Spherical Vs Fractal Glider - DFF 140bpm

08 - Heliotrope - Oraculum 138bpm

Drooid's track starts with familiar kinds of pads I'd expect to hear from FREq and Overlap. Particularly the sweeping melting vibration pads that we hear from the former and a FREq or Antix like bassline which kicks in. It doesn't sound like a Drooid bassline comparing to fantastic tracks like 'Search the spiral arm' and 'Thundertaker.' Some darkish Overlap styled kind of pads too. Depsite this it's a really deep hypnotic day track that would get me dancing. It builds up pace three quarters of the way through finishing off with a nice xylophone like melody (3.5/5)
FREq's 'Cosmic Nature' is a harder track with a slightly lighter bassline than usual I think. Typical FREq pads and nice little vocal sounds build it up into a phat, enchanting floater. This track is a nice builder that takes off with sweeping atmospheric pads and a subtle melodic riffs that hang above the soundscape. Track ramps down then builds up into a crazy euphoria progressing along nicely. Stunning track (4.5/5)
Krama and Castell start with familiar sounding progressive riffs but kick in with a deep, phat bassline and nice pebble bouncing on water pads. A nice reverberating synth pad gets played out alternating between two tones. With two minutes to go an eery pad floats around like a ghost. This track would be great for a progressive sunrise set. (3.5/5)
Heliotrope are one of my favourite artists for big phat sweeping progressive. The track starts off with a great intro leading into a deep vibrating bassline and nice percussion to keep one's feet moving. Nice dark and light daytime pads rip across intermittently whilst the track builds up in layers. A powerful synth pad wobbles over the track creating an awesome soundscape. This is phat, atmospheric progressive at it's best. Intense facial expressions guaranteed! Fantastic stuff (5/5)
Sensum provides a harder progressive styled track with a slightly annoying repetitive vocal sample. Nice light tribal styled percussion and a deep bassline make a pretty interesting track and sounds a little like some Ticon I think. Light synth stabs get played out plus some other nice pads moving around. Track doesn't build up but plods along nicely. (3/5)
Oliliuqui's remix kicks in with a hard styled trippy progressive track with a hard, sharp basskick and deep wobbly bassline. I don't know what the original version sounds like. Very nice trippy sounds and a great body moving melody builds up making the track quite funky. A different echoeing chime sounding melody makes the track sparkle and is layered with a nice wobbly acid line. The track lightens up a bit before slowly and effectively building up into the original and middle melodies. Lovely morning track. (4/5)
A Fractal Glider styled deep, groovy bassline starts this track off layered with squelchy Fractal pads and happy daytime riffs from the trio. A nice "This is a time machine" sample. With three minutes to go the track soars with a beautiful atmospheric pad built up with those FREqish pads. A happy melody kicks in after this to bring us down again to reality putting smiles on everyones faces. The bass groove then suddenly peaks the track by building up a few notches. Perfect daytime music. (4.5/5)
This Heliotrope track kicks in straight away with a nice deep kick and warm bassline with assorted dubby and squelchy acid pads. This continues until the half way mark with a lovely breakdown before kicking in with added percussion and a new repetitive dubby pad running to the end. A solid track from Heliotrope (3.5/5)

This compilation exceeded my expectations. It is better than 'Battle Royal' and I think this, current releases from The Higher Human Form and expected releases from Heliotrope and Sun Control Species should do great things for ZMA Records.

Thanks to Hercules, crew and the producers for delivering such deep, phat beautiful tunes.

Artist: Various Artists
Title: A Day After…

Format: CD (Jewelcase)
Released: September, 2004

Review:

Again and again ZMA have marked themselves as one of the best progressive labels, especially in the last couple of years with wonderful compilations like “Monarchie III”, both CS’s in the “Session”-series and latest with “Battle Royal”. So when “A Day After” revived at Psyshop I ordered it right away – and with very high expectation. When it dumped in last week, I must say I was a bit disappointed with the cover though; the design is more a less a ripoff of the blockbuster movie “A Day After Tomorrow” (hence the title I guess). But once I put in the CD, this was quickly forgotten:

01. SunControlSpecies - Structure [9:17]
Opening the compilation is the up-and-coming Aussie SunControlSpecies. It’s more or less been a tradition to find one of his tracks on the latest ZMA-compilations (Monarchie III excluded), and “Structure” is a teaser for his upcoming album. Here he shows a new, more house-like and groovier side of his repertoire; The BPM is lowered a bit compared to his earlier work, and I think it’s a great change. There are clearly resemblances to FREq, but still with the unique SCS-tough.

02. FREq - Cosmic Nature [8:50]
Next up is New Zealands FREq, whom I guess every progressive listener have heard off, unless they’ve been living on a deserted island the last 2 years. After a couple of somewhat disappointing releases after his amazing “Strange Attractors” album, he’s back in style with “Cosmic Nature” – a beautiful, uplifting progressive track with stunning vocals and the well-known huge production. One of his best.

03. Krama Vs. Castell - Ministry Of Fantasy [8:26]
Danish Maria Castell (of D-Vei) is here collaborating with a new duo called Krama, and it’s a nice surprise. The intro is amazingly deep, and reminds me of some of the stuff Buzzmonx produced a couple of years ago. The track progresses with a pretty simple bassline and builds up nicely with some Sonus-like pads. You can really dive into this track.

04. Heliotrope - Lazy Bones [8:18]
The greek duo Heliotrope got their first 2 tracks released on “Battle Royal” this spring, and here they are again with one of their deep, progressive creations. Like their first 2 tracks, it’s dark and haunting, but with a lot more happening. A nice and hypnotizing track – perfect to build up the expectations for the upcoming debut album.

05. Sensum - Let's Turn On [8:12]
I have found Sensum to be one of the weakest points on some of the latest compilations from ZMA, but with “Let’s Turn On” he’s really improved. Still it’s not a standout track, but gone are the dry sounds and monotone beats, and instead he shows a more groovy side of himself, with clever use of tribal percussion, and a much richer sound than earlier.

06. Segment - We Sold Our Souls (Ololiuqui Remix) [9:11]
I had almost forgotten Ololiuqui (apart from some mastering of a few ZMA-CD’s), but here he’s back with a smashing remix of “We Sold Our Souls” from Segments album “01”. The original was far from my favourite on the album, but this remix is really something. Very powerfull beat, the original theme-melody spiced up really nice, and excellent percussion and production. This one will be a bomb on the dance floors.

07. FREq vs Spherical vs Fractal Glider - DFF [8:46]
FREq have previously worked together with Spherical and Fractal Glider, and here the 3 teamed up for “DFF”. The track starts with some heavily Sub6-influenced sounds (Ra He’Ya anyone?), and is, like FREq and Fractal Gliders previous collaboration, more full on than the usual stuff from the FREq-studio. There is hardly any progress in the first 4-5 minutes, but the grand finale with the uplifting, almost epic melody more than makes up for it. Simply beautiful.

08. Heliotrope - Oraculum [8:01]
Ending the compilation is another track from Heliotrope, and while it’s pretty good, I think it falls just a bit short compared to “Lazy Bones”. A bit faster, and with a more fullon-ish bassline, but still centred on the same theme of dark sounds. Good track, although I probably wouldn’t have chosen it to end the compilation.

Bottom line:

I had very high expectations for this one, and they where more than fulfilled already at the first listen. Rarely have I experienced a compilation (or album for that matter) with that many strong tracks, and hardly any weak points. Sure, some tracks are better than others, but they compliment each other nicely, and never does the compilation get boring. Once again I must also compliment ZMA for finding new talents (like Heliotrope) and still maintain a standard a lot of labels must envy.

Weak sides? Well, I still feel the cover is quite cheap, and perhaps I would have liked one more track – but in the end, who really cares when the 8 tracks featured are of so high quality. This is one of the best (if not THE best) progressive trance compilations released this year. I love it.

Favourites:

1(!!), 2(!!), 3, 4, 6(!!), 7(!!)

Verdict:

9/10 – highly recommended progressive trance compilation

I have liked music from ZMA since the begining...and this is the best compilation ever released from ZMA...each track has selected with care and makes up the perfect concept...Smooth yet powerful...techy and tribal touch to it...at its best.
SCS - Structure is simply the best track, Amazing production...
Keep it up, ZMA

WOW! I would go so far as to say this is THE BEST progressive compilation this year. Previously I had said the same about Battle Royal, but ZMA has outdone themselves...

Sun Control Species-'Structure' Every track I hear from him, I am simply blown away by...one of my favorite progressive artists...this track is no exception, from the second it begins, it just draws you in, killer psychedelic sounds, dark, somber melodies, and the intensity(!!!!), this is a deep groover...and the piano near the end, adds the finishing touch to what is, in my opinion, the perfect psychedelic progressive track.

Freq- 'Cosmic Nature' When the Freq full length came out earlier this year, I listened to it so much, that I had to finally put it aside and take a break from it for a bit. This track seems a bit 'bouncier' than much of his other stuff, killer percussive elements as always, and the classic Freq sound we have come to love...usually I am not one to like female vocal samples used in tracks, but this is the exception! It adds so much to this track...when I listen to this, I can just picture it being played on a beach somewhere....the quintessential sunrise track. uplifting and simply beautiful.

Krama Vs. Castell - 'Ministry Of Fantasy' Its good to hear another track from Maria Castell! Her track on Daneism a few years back was one of my favorites...and its good to see that her psychedelic progressive style has evolved so nicely! This one took a few listens to grow on me, its a chugging groover, with a dark, emotional melody that floats along, a slow builder that keeps your attention.

Heliotrope-'Lazy Bones' These guys definately stood out for me as 2 of the best tracks on Battle Royal, I cannot say enough about Heliotrope, "Lazy Bones" is an incredible track, one of my favorites on the album, dark driving progressive, psychedelic sounds, killer percussion make this track killer...I am in love!!!!! can't wait to hear more!!

Sensum-'Let's Turn On' This is another track on this comp that took me a few listens to get into, before I realized that this track could really get a dancefloor moving...very bouncy, groovy, somewhat housey progressive track. And although when you first hear the sample "let's turn on" at the beginning of the track, you think it might end up being kind of annoying...but then when it comes back in during the middle of the track, "lets turn on"....it just makes you want to rock out...

Segment - We Sold Our Souls (Ololiuqui Remix) -Been waiting to hear something- anything- from Segment for so long now...and the fact that I haven't heard anything from Ololiuqui for a while makes this twice as good...This remix is excellent, tho I don't recall the original track, a swirling melody that continuously builds upon itself...tribal organic percussion, used sparingly enough to let each individual sound stand out...and a snare that just keeps this track moving.

FREq vs Spherical vs Fractal Glider - DFF- This is my least favorite track on this cd, maybe this is just too much on the melodic tip for me...the production is excellent, the first half of this track i'm really enjoying..."This is a time machine' sample is well used...I just think towards the end in the last minute of the track, the bassline changes, and this track gets a bit epic for my tastes

Heliotrope- 'Oraculum' Another killer track from these guys...dark oozy psychedelic synth sounds...killer sample usage....driving bassline....the epitome of psychedelic progressive that I want to be listening to!

Overall- I love this compilation. It is one of the few that I can listen to start to finish, I would play any of the tracks on this compilation in a dj set of mine...In fact, this is actually the first cd that has inspired me to sit down and write a review! ZMA is doing very good things for progressive psychedelic trance today.....and then to hear they are releasing SunControlSpecies and Heliotrope full length albums....I cannot wait to hear more info on these!           ~gOa ist nicht nur musik sondern auch eine lebenseinstellung~

ZMA have really come up with the goods this year, Battle Royal was awesome, and both the recent releases Higher Human Form - "Neurohighways" album as well as the "A day after" compilation are gold!

Killer progressive releases, ZMA... Keep up the good work!
