Review:
World-class tech-clash…
Czech label Tribal Vision seems to be on a trance mission to rid the world of sub par progressive trance… With one exception (the boring Sonic Cube album), everything released here has been absolute ace – and the quest continues on this, their 12th physical CD release… Once again DJ Slater is in charge and most of us have pretty much come to trust his taste blindly… Let’s check out what rocks his world at the moment…
Let me take you thru the tracks…
#01: Roman Rai – Disco On The Mothership [130 BPM]
Roman Horinek from the Czech capital Prague has found his musical expression lingering somewhere between fluffy, commercial club trance and dirty, electro-ridden progressive trance… I much prefer the latter, but Roman has a way of charming everyone even when his music is clubby… And that’s also the case here… This is a housy little groover – rich in disco flavour and totally uplifting… Pretty nice, but could have used a little unpredictability…
#02: Nick Hogendoorn & Eelke Kleijn – Rabbit Whole [129 BPM]
Dutch producers Eelke Kleijn & Nick Hogendoorn team up on this electro-soaked, funky piece of progressive house… The production is über-tight and the subtle-bassline has that lovely underground vibe that I really like… Totally danceable, without being a full-blown hit… Tasty though!
#03: Fitalic – Atomic Atmosphere (Thomas Penton Remix) [130 BPM]
Atomic Atmosphere was one of the most predominant (and coolest) tracks off Robin Fitter’s 2006 album on Tribal Vision of same name… And now, here’s the re-interpretation by US producer Thomas Penton – and he managed to make an already very cool track even cooler. The original was massive, tight and un-fluffy – and this remix adds to that on all fronts… The reverbs are stretched, the bass refined and the build-up + break kicks even more proggy ass now… A superb remix to an already great original! Wonderful!
#04: Brisker & Magitman – Single Shot [130 BPM]
I’ve only heard a couple of tracks from the Israeli duo Brisker & Magitman (Rami Brisker & Igal Magitman) but those have been pretty nice… And so is this filthy beast! This is nitty-gritty, unpolished progressive trance which borders on both tech-trance and electro… I like the phat rhythm work, the tooth-grinding FX and the deeeeeep, bouncy bassline… A lovely track that will have everyone on the dancefloor bouncing all around!
#05: Tegma – David’s Song [130 BPM]
Swedish superstar duo Tegma (Omar Chelly & Jason Orfanidis) never seize to impress me with their vast genre-bending talent. Especially their two latest albums, and in particularly Around The World In 80 Minutes (Tribal Vision 2006) are among the best progressive cross-over albums in recent years. This track suits the theme of this compilation perfectly… This is raw, unfiltered progressive trance with more than a few nods to tech-house and electro… The seemingly simple lead works on more than one level, and with some subtle knob-adjustment the guys manage to make this into a very pleasant experience… Totally trippy cross-over trance! Stellar!
#06: Duca – Dirty Mind [126 BPM]
Duca is Dusan Sekić from Serbia who has released a full album + a bunch of compilation tracks under his Anax alias. His track on PsyBooty’s 2006 compilation ServeEm2wice had it qualities, but wasn’t as interesting as his Anax input… But that’s all changed now – this is a fine piece of crossover trance… As the title so cleverly hints, this is diRRty – dirty as in funkalicous, bubbly, serrated and totally scrumptious! Trance meets progressive meets house meets tech… Head-bopping, foot tapping, body moving trance music. I’m loving it!
#07: Phony Orphants – Monkey Business [128 BPM]
Danish producers Mikkel Dahlgaard (Emok) & Jeppe Ørnkilde released their second album [it'cetra] on Iboga Records last year – a potent album which really pushed the boundaries of progressive trance. Despite a remix for Antix, the guys haven’t really released anything as P.O. for a long time. I guess they’ve been focussing on their projects (Emok & Mondayz Millionaires). Anyway, with this track they’re somewhat back in the loop. I don’t know quite what to make of this – on one hand it’s sleek, plush progressive trance with great production and a slick sound. On the other hand, there’s not really anything that makes me jump up and down… So, for home listening or as a DJ transition tool this is ace. For partying it’s less good.
#08: Flowjob – Run Baby Run (Antix Remix) [130 BPM]
The debut album Support Normality (Iboga Records 2006) by Danish producers Joakim Hjorne & Mads Tinggaard didn’t really fare too well with me… It had a couple of nice tracks, but as a whole I was bored most of the time… One of the tracks that did bode will with me was the epic smash opener Run Baby Run. On this compilation we get a remix from kiwi duo Antix (Barton & Hayden Strom). Recently I’ve had a somewhat ambivalent feeling towards their output which has often been too fluffy for my taste – and large parts of this track suffers under that too… With that being said, let me also stress that this remix sure has some qualities – and especially the last half does justice to the epic original. But as a whole, I like the original over this.
#09: Fitalic & Jaan – Voice Of Istanbul [130 BPM]
Robin Fitter is back for round two – in which he’s joined by his alter ego Jaan. And the man’s still got it… Holy baloney, this is tribal beast of a track… Percussion rich, driving progressive trance that seems much faster than the BPM indicates… The reverb is tweaked in a really interesting way and the general feel I get from this track is pure enjoyment… It fuses trance, techno and progressive into a deep, unholy mix… A cracking, gargantuan underground track! Brilliant!
#10: Jaïa & Silicon Sound aka. Even 11 – Like This [130 BPM]
Even 11 is a new project by French psy-prog morning masters Jaïa (Yannis Kamarinos) and Silicon Sound (Johannes Regnier). Much like their Altitudes project, this is highly experimental, genre-bending stuff… This is the freestyle track which fuses house, electro, progressive trance and more obscure forms of electronica… And it works like a charm! This is a highly original track which is destined to turn a few heads… Very funky stuff which works for both dancing and sofa trancing. Sweet!
Tribal Vision strikes gold once again! This, their 12th CD release, is another very varied, versatile collection of fine music… Only a few of the tracks here, didn’t really agree with me – and that was mainly because of their fluffy nature… But as a whole, this is one heck of a compilation with a very high percentage of stand-out tracks. Heck, just take a look at my indication of fav’e tracks below. That’s pretty damn impressive! Slater, you know your shit! Kudos for that!
The murky cover art by Quapim (Lukas Opekar) fits the overall theme of the compilation, and once again we get an informative booklet + a Case Logic-friendly DJ-slip. Value for money if there ever was value for money! Another Tribal Vision release that comes highly recommended by me. An essential purchase for any fan of tech-fused, electro-ridden, house-inspired progressive trance. Enjoy!

It's quite admirable how this label keeps raising its bar with every comp.
Trash art is no different - a smashing mix of prog house,prog trance and a lil' psy prog.
One must mention Tribal vision's nuclear bomb,Mr.Duca - every release of him is a dancefloor smasher,his "Dirty mind" tune featured here brought up tons of dust @ universo parallelo few days ago....
can't wait for his album!!!

One of the best comps this year with most of the tracks leaning twards the clubby they are all very well thought out tracks that do wonders on the dance floor. A must have in any prog collection. An A project for sure. NICE WORK! |

Review:
Tribal Vision Records - if you've been following the progressive psytrance sound in the last years, you have no doubt come across this Czech label which, since the first release in late 2004, has become one of the most respected labels in the scene, and one of the strongest ambassadors for the incorporation of progressive and electro-house into the melting-pot that is progressive psytrance. The newest release from Tribal Vision is compiled by the labels now well-known founder and label-manager DJ Slater, and consists of 10 tracks and remixes - a couple of them already released on previous digital and/or vinyl-releases from Tribal Vision.
01. Roman Rai - Disco On The Mothership [130 BPM]
First track is by Czech Roman Rai or - as he was called on the first releases - just Rai. His first releases where very mellow and gentle-sounding, but his more recent creations has been moving more and more towards the dirtier, trendy electro-house sound. "Disco On The Mothership" is sort of between the 2 worlds - laidback pre-party material, but still with a certain hint of electro-edge. Nice enough opener.
02. Nick Hogendoorn & Eelke Kleijn - Rabbit Whole [129BPM]
Eelke Kleijn is my pick for best producer in 2006 where he, both alone and teaming up with Nick Hogendoorn and C-Jay (and earlier also with Roger Van Bostelen as M.I.D.O.R. & Six4Eight), has released some stunning material on labels like Baroque, Tilth, Plastik Park and Lost Language. "Rabbit Whole" is another nice collaboration with Nick Hogendoorn, and is a bit less trancy than I've come accustomed to by these guys - oozing with quality.
03. Fitalic - Atomic Atmosphere (Thomas Penton Remix) [130 BPM]
Next up is Thomas Pentons remix for the title-track from Fitalics "Atomic Atmosphere" debut album. Ironically one of the weaker tracks from that album, but Penton has given it a really nice treatment, giving it a much more clubby approach, and it really works like a charm. Big breakdown, catchy riffs and very crowd-pleasing grooves.
04. Brisker & Magitman - Single Shot [130 BPM]
Israeli duo seems to have released hundreds of tracks this year - some of their first were amazing, but after that I must admit it's been hard to keep up, also because some of their later material has been lacking in quality. "Single Shot" is not too bad though - it's a bit more stripped down than usual, and has an energetic drive that'll get the dancefloor absolutely worked up. Certainly does the job.
05. Tegma - David's Song [130 BPM]
Next track is from Swedish duo Tegma, who after their latest album "Around The World In 80 Minutes" is now considered one of Tribal Visions most loyal acts. I found "David's Song" a very messy mix of progressive trance, tribal and electro house - and like their recent appearance on Echoes Recods, also way bellow what I consider their usual standard. Disappointment.
06. Duca - Dirty Mind [126 BPM]
Croatian Duca seems to be the upcoming progressive act on everybody's lips at the moment, with appearances on labels like Iboga, Moonflower and Blue Tunes. I haven't heard all of the tracks released so far, but must say I have a hard time understanding the hype from what I've heard, and "Dirty Mind" is no exception. Nice pseudo-electro grooves, but I found the vocals very annoying.
07. Phony Orphants - Monkey Business [128 BPM]
Danish duo Phony Orphants is up next - in my opinion it's one of the best acts in the art of fusing electro-house and progressive psytrance, and "Monkey Business" is not really an exception, although it doesn't quite have the hit-potential as some of the best work from their latest album. Very delicate sound, very well-produced and with enough catchiness to still make it go down well if played at the right time.
08. Flowjob - Run Baby Run (Antix Remix) [130 BPM]
"Run Baby Run", the opening-tune (and my personal favourite) from Flowjobs "Support Normality" album is getting the remix-treatment by Antix who are on the way with a new album for the upcoming party-season. At first it sounds a bit strange with those reversed and chopped up the vocals from the original, and although it's not a bad tune in any way, it never reaches the quality of the original.
09. Fitalic & Jaan - Voice Of Istanbul [130 BPM]
On "Voice Of Istanbul" Fitalic teams up with Jaan - a tune already released digitally before the release of Fitalics debut-album, and it's certainly among my favourites here. Very trancy and dreamy compared to most of the material on the album, with big lush sounds and simple, delicious melodies - definitely a peak-time tune for the progressive clubs.
10. Jaïa & Silicon Sound aka Even 11 - Like This [130 BPM]
Last but not least is Even 11 - a collaboration between some of France's finest ambassadors for the uplifting progressive and psychedelic sound, and after 2 stunning progressive/full on appearances on Exposure Productions latest compilations, "Like This" is much different. Imagine a bit of the phat electro-craze in the grooves, loaded up with some enormous out-of-this-world pads - after hearing their liveset on Sonica in 2006 I was kind of expecting this, and I must say they don't disappoint. Keeping up with the zeitgeist of the electro-wave, but giving it a twist of their personal sound - great stuff.
Bottom line:
In short, "Trash Art" doesn't fully live up to it's predecessor "Street Art", and I generally found the standard on the majority of Tribal Visions earlier compilations a tad higher - not saying it's bad stuff in general, but I'm just not as impressed as I used to be, I personally feel the electro-trend is getting a bit tiring, and last but not least some of the best tracks on "Trash Art", where tracks I already had from their digital release, which probably had a slightly negative impact on my final judgement.
Like always from Tribal Vision, "TrashArt" is a good DJ-tool, and most of these tracks will undoubtedly get massive airplay in the clubs in the coming months, but I just don't find it as fresh as I used to.

its a good release, no doubt...its hi-class produced club orientated dj tool, but for me, the whole electro thingy gets boring too. Its getting almost like in fullon the trend, so its more stagnant then innovating imo. Nothing new anymore…nothing we didn’t heard before
For me this cd, so did Lime light 2, never reaches the same level like the first releases like Urban legends or the first Lime light.
But that’s just my taste…so, for all those who like the electro-house thing…get this!

Well, even if I like some of the tracks on here I totally agree with Rumble Pack here. The electro thingy is getting pretty boring. It seems like about every progressive producer tries his/her hand at the stuff and the bore-factor is hitting in hard now. Because it's strange but when progressive artists just produce regular prog they seem more different from one another then when producing this electro stuff.

I very much enjoyed this album. Pretty much like every track here and have played many to great response.
I'm not sure what the noise here about electro is? Really!!!! This is NOT what electro sounds like! Some of the tracks have an electro house sound but not really pure electro.
As some of you may know, TVR has been taking steps away from trance for a while and moving in the house direction. Many of the artists on here are not 'prog trance' artists but house artists. Electro/prog house is what is making the clubs explode all over europe at present and I feel that TVR are producing the goods. I'm glad to hear this in the winter months than the normal plodding on of 'just' psy prog alone, its good to hear a mix.
All said, of course it's a matter of taste and everyone to their own. But I'm enjoying the merging of trance, house and electro thats happening in the scene and think that it can only be healthy for the evolvement and expanding of the scene.
Good DANCE music is good DANCE music... and this cd has plenty of it!

I cant agree Glen. Most of those artist are associated with the psyttrance scene playing at psytrance festivals, releasing on progressive trance labels and I would not say they are more house influenced than prog trance influenced. They mix genres up incl. electro. I personally would love to see Tribal Vision try something new instead of using the same artists (more or less) and the same sound and genre from compilation to compilation. More experimentation would be welcome  .
The fact is that as good a label Tribal Vision is and hats off to Slater who do a great job and is one of the label guys I respect most... Tribal Vision is still very much a label associated with the psy trance / progressive trance scene and it will take a lot more for Tribal Vison to break free of the chains the psytrance scene have around it's neck (if that is the intention of course). It's quite hard to break free from the psytrance scene once you've established yourself in the scene. No matter if you are a label or an artist.
Ok off-topic..
All is mostly said here about the release. To me it's a bit dissapointing just as it's been metioned here. Nothing new under the sun. http://www.peopleagainstpeace.net/ |

I can understand your point TrippyJohnny.
But almost half the artists are more or less house artists releasing 12"s and on comps for house labels.
Roman Rai, Nick Hogendoorn & Eelke Kleijn, Fitalic, Thomas Penton, Brisker & Magitman, Duca.
I don't think any of these artists have made their mark by playing 'psy' festivals. But by releasing good music on house labels and with top dj's spinning them at house clubs.
anyway, back on topic. My favs.
