Before Yuli Fershtat developed his progressive project known as Perfect Stranger, he already had 3 artist albums under his belt, released under the name of BLT, a more Full-on project, yet strongly scented with progressive vibes. Early in 2005 he released his first progressive track under his PS moniker, and compiled the successful Set 4 compilation for Iboga which soon had a follow up in 2006 with the Hibernation compilation. His first and beautiful progressive album entitled « learning = change » came out in spring 2006 at Iboga and deservedly earned him the respect of Progressive-heads. During the same period, he released a good amount of tracks and rmx at labels such as Blue Tunes, Flow, Digital Structures, Echoes etc. It’s been almost 10 years since his first album came out, which is another way of saying that we are dealing with a mature and experienced musician, who has strong opinions on music. He describes his style as being « psychedelic, tribal, atmospheric and challenging ». « Challenging » says a lot about the standards he sets for himself when it comes to writing music. I would add: very emotional and groovy, as his talent for the melodic register and his expertise in building infectious rhythms is remarkable. We also know from his DJ sets, and from the charts he publishes sometimes on his webpage, that he’s very sensitive to the evolution of electronic music, and that the sirens of electro, techno and minimal that shape the sound of today’s electronic music have not left him stonily indifferent, unlike the statues he likes to display on his CD covers. Let’s see if this shows through in the compilation album he is delivering, made of rmx of his music.

Review

1. Perfect Stranger - What's The Lineup ( Morax remix )
Israeli producer Morax is no newcomer to Iboga. His tracks were already in the Set 6 and Hibernation compilations. He’s written a couple of pieces with Yuli Fershtat under both his BLT and PS moniker, released at Alchemy, Flow and Uphonic. And in addition to this, he’s already remixed Ace Ventura’s « Go with Da Flow », just to name of few of his accomplishments in relation to Iboga’s artists. « What’s the Line up » was Yuli’s 2nd track released at his home label and it was a real gem. This rmx version adds more melancholic harmonies contrasting nicely with the slightly reverberated lead from the original. The synth work discreetly and smartly evokes the electro-minimal arrangements very much in fashion these days. The original rhythmic combo is pitched down, yet punctuated with a groovy snare and hi-hat which do a nice job here. The break features the playful and whip hits of the original’s theme updated with break elements and an electro influence. It’s a great balance between what’s left of the seminal piece and updated sonic influences.
This artist who has been currently digging the Psy-Prog register has delivered here a brilliant intro, arguably his best rmx, and my favourite track from him so far, that perfectly sets the mood of the entire CD.

2. Antix - Free As We Are ( Perfect Stranger re edit )
Next is a reedit by PS of one of Antix’s strong prog-house pieces from their now classic 1st album « Lull ». It showcases Yuli’s talent for constructing irresistible deep grooves with a nice blend of stratospheric reverbs together with tribal percussions overlaying a rocking bassline. The original’s subterranean voice sample is kept intact. We move into the realm of Trance in a superb way.

3. Perfect Stranger & Ace Ventura - Perfect Ace ( Atmos remix )
Founding Father of Progressive, Atmos, takes the rmx of « Perfect Ace », a track written with co-chairman of Progressive University in Israel : Yoni Oshrat aka Ace Ventura. The spooky and perky themes of the original find a new jewel box with Atmos’ signature reverberated lead and compelling rhytmic combo, quite slowed down from the original tempo, as you might expect. He adds one of his elegant uplifting melodies that perfectly fits into the tone of the original : this is Atmos at his best.

4. Atmos - KNS ( Perfect Stranger remix )
Now it’s PS’s turn to rmx Atmos’ KNS, featured on his last album at Spiral Trax. And this is quite a metamorphosis! A stripped down orchestration features a fat electro distorted bass which very very sofltly ushers in the groovy riff of the seminal piece. Atmospheric reverberated pads reminiscent of the original serve as luminous interludes to retain a much appreciated trancey touch. This is brilliant and will be undoubtedly be among this summer’s hits.

5. Perfect Stranger & Pena - Ode Ao Sol ( Vibrasphere remix )
The aptly titled and sublime Ode ao Sol has been definitely a stand out track since the publication of PS’s « learning = change » album, which Pena (cowriter of the track), had the priviledge of releasing at his label Flow records. It set new standards in Yuli’s production, taking his sunbathed lyricism and uncompromised sense of rhythmic drive to more stripped down, not to say minimalist arrangements. It will come as no surprise that such a track raised clouds of dust at the last edition of Universo Parallelo. Superstar duo Vibrapshere takes the gem into its idiosyncrasy : an original deep bass creates an entrancing pace, while the unforgettableand emotional twisted and distorted intervals of the original theme recur at times. Yet, I am not sure that the duo’s typical chromatic ascending and descending melody that runs along the track was necessary here, since we’ve heard it quite a lot these days in their recent production. But it sure does sound fat and has undeniable groove.

6. BLT - Six Feet Under ( Perfect Stranger remix )
The sixth track is Yuli Fershtat remixing one of his BLT unreleased tracks « 6 feet under ». Dark pumping techno beat develops towards more electro shades stomping on minimal synth and nicely evolving percussive orchestration in the vein of today’s best Electro Tech producers like Kanziani and Booka Shade, to name but a few. The spooky voice sample and the ensuing arrangements play an important role in endowing the track with an eerie, trancey touch. Absolutely convincing !

7. Perfect Stranger & Emok - Truth ( Motion Drive remix )
Zurich based producer Philip Guillaume’s (also part of the Rumble Pack and Natural Flow projects) new solo and progressive project Motion Drive takes the beautiful epic and lyrical collab piece of Emok and PS to the rmx. We remain in the realm of Trance, with more pounding rhythm, atmospheric pads and melodic snipets. Nothing breathtaking here, compared to what we’ve been indulged with so far, yet flawlessly produced, and overall a nice track.

8. Perfect Stranger - Bliss ( Flowjob remix )
Danish Duo Flowjob takes Bliss, another memorable and appropriately titled track from PS, originaly published in the Hibernation compilation, into their soundscape. The rhythmic section is expertly driving, and leads to gently fluffy melodic lines, among which the original motif is clearly audible. This additional lyrical material is not as captivating and blissful as the original, but it must be quite difficult to match Yuli Fershtat’s talent when it comes to writing a melody or expressing lyricism.

9. Perfect Stranger & Pena - Ode Ao Sol ( Eitan Reiter remix )
Unsurprinsingly enough, Ode ao Sol has inspired vocations for rmx, and Eitan Reiter from Loud takes the track to more minimal/electro territories. It has a nice filtered syncopated kick/bass combo which still makes it pleasurable for the dancefloor. The reverberated original theme and voice sample echo in the distance, but the additional melody, especially in the final section, is a bit like shining a torch to the sun, but still keeps the standards of elegance from the original.

10. Perfect Stranger & Pena - Ode Ao Sol ( Elegant Universe remix )
The Israeli duo Amir Ardon and Miki Litvak (of Domestic fame) was formed in 2005 under the Elegant Universe moniker. It did not take much time before they caught the attention of big names of Djaying and label managers. The two track EP they released for Kasey Taylor’s Vapour deservedly earned them a strong reputation as Electro House producers, after they had previously published at Iboga and its sub-label Prestige. This 3rd rmx of Ode ao Sol showcases an oscilating lead with soft percussive scansion that soberly quotes only a short fragment of the original’s theme. The bassline shifts in the final bars, paying a nice tribute to the dance anthem the original will forever be. A very nice track that generously closes the CD in their stylish elegant way.

Bottom line.

Perfect Stranger fans will simply not want to miss this essential release in his discography. Progressive lovers and Dj alike will find countless tools to make people dance and rediscover his music, which has been upgraded to new dimensions, and has intelligently taken aboard today’s trend, which is Techno, Electro and Minimal oriented, but without losing its soul. The album is loaded with masterpieces, and heaps of these tracks will be spinned at this summer’s festivals. Picking a favourite is like choosing between caviar and foie gras. You just don’t want to chose. After Behind Blue Eyes’ rmx album, this new rmx album is another winner from Iboga. Don’t miss it !

Awesome album.
Can't decide what are my favorites yet, the remix to Perfect Ace is great, 5 bpms less than the original, always promissing but never delivering... Though I think I still prefer the original, this one is has a different proposal, and definitely is a hell of a remix.

Other highlights are the well chosen track order, making it spectacular for home listening, and the cover art, already a favorite for the most beautiful of 2007. Check it here:

Just like the guy above me, i prefer the original Ode Ao Sol as well. The rmx of KNS is fantastic! Morax did one hell of a job with the first tune, love it!

Great release just like I expect from iboga. Aden, one hell of a review man!

thanks!

Don't know why I never liked BLT or Perfect Stranger, it just doesn't get to me. When it comes to progressive, I like the more sophisticated sounds, such as Antix or XV Kilist.

That put aside, I have great respect though for his music, as he tries very hard to stay true to psychedelic sounds.

Perfect prog album, One of the best I heard for a long time.

Eitan Reiter remix is amazing, Yuli's remix to KNS is excellent and a really dance floor hit!

The re edit to Antix is a piece of art and the remix to six feet under is beautiful.

If I keep on I will include everything...

Perfect album by the perfect stranger which for my opinion is one of the best and the most serious producers in the world prog scene.

You are maybe right when you compare the original Ode Ao Sol with remixes, the original is icon, but these gays made a perfect tracks as well.
This release is "a must have", i like all the tracks except maybe the first one.

Very deep and psychedelic touch in some of them...

The album keeps growing on me.

Now my favorite is the Perfect Stranger rmx to Six Feet Under. I never heard the original, but this one definitely Pwned me.
The discrete way in which the track evolves towards the sample, building bar by bar the "right spot" in which the sample is delivered. And after his message, the way the mood changes... Just no words...
