This is the second release of Helicon Sound System, a label which the owner is DJ CRX, or Kostas if you prefer; label based in Greece.
I really liked the concept of this CD; the number 7 and the entropy concept.
If you download this release (that can be found in here: http://forum.isratrance.com/viewtopic.php/topic/111831/forum/63 ), you can have a reading inside the booklet, about the nrº 7, and what entropy is about. This baby has also the particularity of being released on the 7 of July of 2007; once again we have the nrº 7 working. This idea was very well achieved.
Now we go into the music itself:
Track nrº 1, by Phovos and Deimos, that already participated in the previous/debut release of Helicon Sound System (all info about this CD can be found in here: http://forum.isratrance.com/viewtopic.php/topic/104619/forum/41 and my review here: http://forum.isratrance.com/viewtopic.php/topic/111131/forum/9 ), this time bring a very wonderful track for the beginning of the CD. I am in love with this track, it is so beautiful. This track is so very easily assimilated for your body, that you can almost be imbued with the track. The random noises used in the background are so great, so soft and yet so catchy for your ears. I really dig this track. It has all ingredients to levitate your brain. It is my favourite track of this release, it is that kind of tracks I am hearing several times during the day and night, and I just can get enough of it. Maybe a 15 minutes version would be fine …I’m just kidding but it would be definitely something I would really love to hear…maybe a challenge for the duo? For the people who don’t know, the people behind this project are N.O.M. and Narcosis.
Now we move into track nrº 2, Liquid Hunger, made by Fractroll, an Australian artist who also produces under the name of Terratrollz (Fractroll + Terratech). This one we get into more pumping style of track, unlike the previous one, this one isn’t like a “ballad”, but it is way more dance floor orientated, we have other type of elements, not so “slow” like the previous one; some nice effects make this one. “Should I give him some medics?” - Nice sample in this one.
In track nrº 3, we have an Israeli artist, Brain Scratcher is his name, and Moment To Pain the name of the track; we can from almost the start of the track find elements that identify him has Israeli, I am sure if you hear this one you will understand what type of sounds I am speaking of. The track is well built and in terms of production it has not a thing to point. There is some type of used sounds that I don’t like that much.
Next we have again N.O.M. (Nature Of Mind), with Greek Alphabet, and here we are in night territories; acid lines and aggressive leads are all in there. It twists your mind with some hypnotic sounds, not many, but the main idea, the aggressive psychedelic effects make you float…lost.
And from track nr º 5, I don´t really now which artist is who, because in the booklet track list I find artist nr º 5 be Khaos Sektor, but in the downloaded CD the artist is Secret Society, nevertheless we are into mental music. The kick and baseline are really powerful, you can notice it, has soon has this 2 elements start. We have hypnotic random noises here and there always combined with leads in the background giving an extra boost into the track, some human (male/female) samples, repeating several times through out the track and some being distorted compose this one.
Now we are in track nrº 6 – and we have quite a powerful base line in this track! It starts with some very smooth leads, and some twilight sounds. It is also very deep in terms of what it makes me feel; it doesn’t have also to much great oscillations in the track itself. I also find interesting the way this music sounds to my ears – almost with a progressive dark feeling.
Once more in track nrº 7, I have my doubts who the artist is (because of the discrepancy I have stated before), but the track goes like this: again some human samples at the 1st minute of the track, and after this, there is no turning point ?; I mean, we are into experimental type of sounds; this one is always pumping, twisted, aggressive, fast, slow, braked leads, some female screams, a lot of work in the kick, the hi/low hats make that pumtx pumtx rhythm, this track is insane. Very fast track.
With all this mixings in the artist name I still have my doubts who is who . Maybe CRX can bring some lights into this matter.
“I think there is something in the water”, is almost the beginning of track nr º 8. And this one is adequate into the deep hours of the night, twisting your mind is the key word for this track. This one works like a razorblade. Along with twisted sounds we have some laughs and at 3:39 minutes we have a small brake with some samples that it seem at the 1st hearing shouldn’t be there, but after hearing it several times, that brake idea is very good.
From track 9 the names issue comes back to normal, and this one is Hellraiser from Sator Arepo a German producer, that delivers a “hell of track”. If you believe the previous tracks were fast and twisted, then this one what is it? This one seems like a train coming your way, the baseline + kick are very present through out the track. There are even certain parts that remind me Infekt Insect music. This track doesn’t have too many leads, or so it seems to my ears, it is kind of minimal track.
And suddenly we are in the last track. Yata Garasu is a producer from Belgium, and his contribution on this CD is Malebolgia. And like the previous track this one is minimalist in terms of sounds/leads. The kick is always there hammering your brain. It ends with some soft melodies.
To conclude my review I just want to say that with this release HSS records entered the world of more experimental sounds, achieving a nice release, giving the opportunity of some newcomers to show their work. Some still have to continue practising to reach a more high level of production, maybe add more dynamism into the tracks, but are in the good path, others are already established artists, who continue to deliver their unique sounds.
I’m looking forward to hear the next release of HSS records.
