"BOOO" - V/A on Doof records

As this cd has accompanied me thru a full week of writing and as i haven't done any reviewing lately, i thought it would be a tribute to these musical nootropics to verbalise how i enjoyed their company. So sit back, relax with some juice, coz here goes the story (and it's quite some textbook):

Title: "BOOO"
Artist: various artists
Label: Doof Records
Released: February 2005
Style: ... Doof

Tracklist:

1. Bonky – Thanks Tim
2. Cactus – Logitech
3. Zirkin & Zebra-N – The G Word
4. Quasar – Kami Kami (rmx)
5. Quasar – Hoffman Overdrive
6. Blisargon Demogorgon vs Encephalopaticys – Isometric Constitution
7. Entropy – Escape
8. Double R.E.L – Decrypted Sound
9. Double R.E.L – Prehysterical Moment

into the tracks:

1. As a Bonky fan, i am happy to see and hear the continuation of a legacy. In more than one way, this is a historical track. First, it's a true pleasure to find new relics, "forgotten music" from the genial freak amongst the angels. And second, "Thanks Tim" clearly sounds like Bonky put down the base for Doof's acid style, or at least built a good part of it, when his first album (*1) rocked the cradle of Doof records.
Crispy, hazey and quite minimal, great groove for the twilight dancefloor. Full flashback indeed!

2. A spikey track for the freaky night hours comes from the Cactus. Plenty of russian influences (Pykovskish tambourin and soundscapes on top of a zooming bass a la Parasense) can be caught during a chaotic start, where different radiostations overlap untill we finally tune in to the right frequency. In the break, Mozart wins from the reversed cymbal reverb, dusted with diamonds and then dipped in battery acid, before we enter
the dark cactus fields for a minimal and spooky ride.
Tip for the trip: dont let Timothy Leary get u tripping on the wrong foot

3. Getting off on the funky foot with Shahar & Paul. They already tricked me with their cheezy intro and just before i start to nag for more, a second bassline gets layered on top of the standard doublebubblebass, to fill it up and make more than just the ass shake. Giddy up go! At the first break, it almost seems we're taken into an R&B trip! But before the toasters start to boast, the bass comes rolling in and off we groove again, untill the next pause and after that, the Star Mangled Banner: cute rippup but to me it doesnt quite fit in the story of the track, as set by some earlier samples (simple case of "either ... or..."). No NEED to make sense, but it takes the pace down a bit. Still funny though!
And after it's finished, i fail to answer Paul's 23billion doll.. euh, mics question, what the title might mean. Guess i'd better check out that anthem again and listen carefully for subliminal messages
All your possible answers may be posted in this forum.

4. Then, by means of a series of educational tape recordings, Quasar invites us to join a new workshop in the acid industry. On the first tape, we are provided with the mandatory learning material or as u may say, "brainfood", with typical Westcoast flavors and toppings - non dairy, yet fully spiced and sliced for nocturnal gastronomic joy. Psykonautic cooking class has started. A few hints from Quasar's book of recipes: up the tempo a few degrees more than usual, liquify the bass, heat up the flying leads and then grill the dancefloor. Yummi!

5. (*2) "Please continue to tape five." More californian starshine, to guide us thru another funhouse. Whilst acidic leads pave the way in front of us, weirdly cut up vocals open the gate to trippiness.
"If you dont quite understand it now, ..", dont try to find words, just close your eyes and grasp it. Recently, growing loads of promising sounds travel from the US across the oceans. It seems the American school is opening its doors quite wide and running a 24/7 schedule, lately. With teachers giving classes like this,
i'd surely be attending school again.

6. Another 24/7 schedule is run by is the Macedonian Madhatter Valentino, who's project Blisargon Demogorgon is featured on many releases lately. On this track, he worked together with Encephalopaticys, creating minimal dark stuff for the eerie nighttime, with a technoish structure, uplifting groove and simple but effective changeovers. Sometimes a tad monotonous but definitely dancefloor approved.

7. Entropy taking a different turn. They clearly gained some new inspiration after finishing their album. A galloping techno stylee with lots of sparkling hoovers, crispy grinds and more bounce to the ounce, yet a tad too slow though for my dancing/flying needs. Played it on a party last week at +3.5 so 5bpm faster - worked perfect in the mix and on the floor! At the original speed it probably works best on a morning or daytime set. More please!

8. Taking off with a strong progressive feel, tactically adding plenty of extra's on the side to increase the energy to a sub-fullon level, yet keeping the positive mood, the decryption of sound has commenced. Translating this sonar experiment into our language of dance, Double R.E.L. prove they have found their groove. Everything is moving alright, but just to be sure, we pass the checkpoint halfway:
"is there a problem?" Nosirribob - just happily drifting away on your music!
.. and off we drift!

9. To make a final liftoff to a higher level, the Double Rellers finish this compilation with some sweetsour Israelicatessen. This time they are going into darker regions, yet keeping it bright, to not get lost in style cliches. At first we get tricked by a little rinkadinky fx:treatment, but soon it's "all aboard for the nighttrain through the Sinai" (and back, we wish ). The history of hysteria remains a mystery, yet this tale, that sprouted from its roots, follows the uptempo path through the night, with some funky sideways and trippy alleys on its way. A great closer of the acid parade!

The Verdict:

Thumbzzup to Doof for this nicely varied compilation with plenty of surprises and fresh sounds. Surely also plenty of flashbacks, as promised by the label, but this is not a compilation of classics - this collection keeps to the traditional acid mood of the Doof family, and is not adjusted to just one style of psy, spread over the trancefloors today. No typical full on or dark, no typical progressive, minimal or morning style - just plane old typical Doof with plenty of sunshine and humor lurking over dark edges! Not too scary tho (considering the title), but then again, i'm not afraid of Doof music

-----

(*1) the "Bonky" album, DOOF01 - not the split album with Fungus of Light, on Krembo.

(*2) one nerdy remark:
if the title of track 5 refers to dear old Uncle Albert (who just turned 99!),
it should be "Hofmann Overdrive" - typical typo, but there u have it
... if it is meant to be like this, forgive my pointing finger.

Hoffman Overdrive is an amusing track - i like those samples as well... they really "flip" me over, 6 times i think? i really liked Bonky's music - but i think he has much better tracks then this one. maybe as a sarter to this "BOOO" compilation it fit though.. i think the creme de la creme here is Double R.E.L. no doubt about it. prehistorical moment is a dancefloor mutator.. i just saw it in action last week and man o man... it had people "biting the walls" from the energy in it. Decrypted Sound or its full name "Decrytped Sound of Doyush" is another good one - at a much lower bpm then the rest of the compilation and still has the driving force of a D-9. i think the Entropy track is excellent as well, but i liked their track on 'Forest' more.           "On the other hand, you have different fingers."

yes, finally, to hear Bonky again makes me so happy, the was a musical genius, every track just dripping with psychedelic goodness... this track starts off the cd on a great note. For me this comp is reminicent of the older doof style of Triund and acid test, chunky, funky and deliciously trippy...
my favorites are the Bonky track & Hoffman Overdrive (Quasar). The Zirkin track would be rockin but sorry i just can't get past the Star Spangled sample in the middle, it completely ruins the track for me and makes me a little bit ill actually, songs of American patriotism are the very last things i want to hear in my trance... even if it is just a joke
overall though this comp makes me very happy, as always Doof never disappoints
M.o.E loves doof, thanks guys!

Hi

Let me start by saying this is not an objective review, as zirkin and I compiled this cd and obviously I'm going to say some good things...,but please believe me that this is not a promotional thing. The reason I find myself sitting and writing these words is that I love this compilation in many ways and wanted to give a notion of the thoughts and feelings on the label side of the moon.
booo was cooking in our minds for quite a while. The last three doof compilations (EST 1 & 2, Forest) were very dance floor oriented and tried to find a path between survival of our label and our music. (i think we found it). We felt the urge to go back to the pure doof sound which is the musical origin of our label. Instead of building this compilation to work from the legs up (=dance floor) booo works from the head down. There is nothing evil or aggressive in the music here. It's dark, sometimes spooky but many times funny. This is also the message from the graphics. No need for chainsaws and skulls. This music gets its energy from a deeper source. Mind games.
on the dancefloor, after some good acid I can Some times hear things I havn't noticed before (really ). A curly sound playing around my head and through my body. A sound that makes me smile and dive into inner space. Many of you probably know what I'm talking about... this is the kind of experience we were looking for here.
The trax were collected during a period of over a year and selected from a huge variety of excellent tunes (some artists gave us over 10 trax before we found what we were looking for).
The main criteria for choosing the music was the sensations it aroused in us while listening to it in the studio. We were looking for sounds that would make us ride some kind of mental wave. The bottom line is that these are the trax that made me and zirkin trip in the studio and we can only hope that other people will find joy in listening to them or dancing to them. It's a lovely swim...
Most of this cd isn't easy listening. There's allot of subtext and complexity in this music. I've had the pleasure of playing all of these trax in the right time and for the right people. When it's right, this music can take you for a wild journey. The people on the dancefloor are pulsating, mostly each one with his own expedition, eyes closed, a smile. The best.
Please give this cd the time to sink in. (try the Battery:Randomization in media player @ full screen. As much as I dislike Microsoft these visuals are tripppppy)

Now music:

1. The compilation opens with Bonky. Just like doof's first release. Shortly after bonky died in a diving accident in Bali, his computer crashed erasing all of his files. We found this track on a lost DAT tape and were hooked immediately. It's a classic Bonky track with all his genius and funkiness. We miss you friend.

2. Second is cactus that has remixed this track especially for this release. It's a fractal rollercoaster up to 1:51 when the acid bat comes in. This sound makes me shiver. The whole track can be a sound track for a spook-loony-toon cartoon.

3. In number three we have zirkin & zebra-N in a track that is full of tricks and treats. You need an extra strong set of sub woofers to get full impact from this track. It has a baseline that aims for your belly. Strong but funny. (And about the G word.. that's not for me to tell)

before going on I want to send a huge hug to the lovely "mistress of evil" girls who opened my eyes to the sounds of San Francisco when I was playing for them last year. I met great musical minds like ghreg on earth, mubali, ocelot and of course quasar and the fractal cowboys showing me where the true home of L.S.D is. Open your eyes to the west coast. ( http://www.mistressofevil.com ) respect!

4. quasar has truly moved me with his music and I urge you to seek some more which you can download from his site ( www.alienmassive.com/quasar/main.html ) don't know how it happened but the names of the quasar tracks where swithched :-(. So this is actually "hofmann overdrive" an intense piece that sucks you in right from the start and keeps swirling until you are released breathless and blurry on the other side.

5. this is yet another quasar, and one of the loveliest love songs I've heard in years. Quasar remixed the original version for us to make it just a bit more dancefloor friendly and it's a bliss. Can't stop listening to this one.

6. ok, this is the point where the compilation gets a bit more accessible (I think‘K). A great cooperation between blisargon demogorgon who is heading for a promising start with quite a few releases all over, And his friend encephalopaticys. Please note that we needed two rows of text on the cd cover to fit these names in. they sure know how to pick them up is Macedonia ;-) .
what we liked about it is that it's a very pushing track but with a blisargon baseline but instead of the usual aggression there are flybys and misty clouds that keeps your head floating.

7. our homeboys- entropy with a scratchy tune, on the funny border of their musical work. Again, lots of toys for your brain and hard groove for your legs and ass. Works super well on the floor, try it!

8. two next tracks are from our rising trouble makers double R.E.L. these boys can turn those knobs I tell ya. This track is one of their older ones and we loved it right from the start. It's a slower, multilayered journey and we in good company. The full name here should be "decrypted sound of duyoush" , dedicated to the mighty duyoush who made the two R.E.Ls transform to the double. Thank you for that man.

9. closing things up, and to leave you with no doubt regarding who rules the dancefloor, double R.E.L return with this "horny T-rex bitch with haemorrhoids" of a track. Anytime any place. Play it and you will be rewarded.

Well, I hope they don't ban me from this forum for advertising...
thank you satyr for your review, Love you all
uv
