French Label Turbo Trance delivers the fourth volume of the “Accelerator” series, this time compiled by Etienne Vincent, known as Senix, a well known and respected DJ in the French Trance scene. But to label him solely as a trance DJ would be to pigeonhole him a bit : his musical background is broad, ranging from pop, funk, house, and other Progressive music which he also djays. It comes as no surprise then, that his interest in Progressive led him to be part of the Solead Music roster. His musical tastes lean toward elegant, melodic, groovy morning trance. The two rmx of Oforia and Tranan he has commissioned give a good insight into his discerning musical inclinations. This CD features some of the usual suspects of Turbo Trance’s producers such as Charles Michaud aka Triptych and Elec 3 who have already published their artist album here, but also Manmademan who had a remixed album last year, Tranan, Silicon Sound and Prosper who released tracks on the previous Accelerator or Pygmees’ Groove editions. Yet, this release can boast new signings such as Oforia, GBU and Shanti, who count among the most established and respected producers.

Review

1/ Manmademan - Escape
Manmademan are Paul Baguley and Sonya Bailey and with three artist albums on such notorious labels as Fying Rhyno, Transient, or Electric Orgasm, countless releases on compilations, can be considered as distinguished veterans of the scene, and need no further introduction. They deliver here a sweet opener with a modulated bassline leading the way to softly echoing pads then evolving to crispier and more acid sounds, in a Goa vein.

2/ GBU - Big Tone Blasted
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly is one hell of a heavy weight gathering : Fréderic Holyszewski aka Dado/Deedrah/Synthetic/Trancewave, and even more monikers that I can remember, plus Serge Souque of The Antidote/Total Eclipse fame, plus DJ Dimitri. Want more? They have more releases than I can count on all the most prestigious labels, so it is needless to name them, and they just published their first album “Wanted” a couple of months ago at Twisted. The lead from Big tone blasted sounds nice and fresh with its slightly electro-techy synth, and unfolds with a nice tonal evolution. The break brings some subtle atmospheric pads which give a trancey touch. The production is top notch as you might expect from these guys, and this track sheds an interesting light on the work of this unique posse. It’s not as pounding as what their album got us used to, but fits better into the morning hours of the party with an original and attractive touch.

3/ Triptych feat Senix – Hot track
The electro pop influence is more accentuated in this piece from Triptych featuring Senix himself. You instantly recognize the Triptych original getdafunkinyaface trademark : funky bassline, strong percussive punctuation with full-bodied real sounding drums combo (snare, opened hi-hat), a virtuoso use of voice sample, something the aficionado of his album, or Solead, his prog-electro side project with Motion, got familiar with. The sampled voice here is no other than Gwen Stefani’s from her hit “what you’re waiting for”. It receives a kinky treatment with a lot FX, twists and funny turns, making this track a stunning demonstration of Charles’ level of production. Rightly titled tune indeed!

4/ Shanti – Flight of the phoenix
This piece sees the return, in great shape, of Shanti Matkin from the Spun roster, also formerly known as Juvenile, and you know he can make marvels. This producer already has two artist albums on Vision Quest and Spun, also one remixed album at his home label and many tracks and remixes released on prestigious labels such as Hommega, TIP World and Solstice. “Flight of the phoenix” starts with a voice sample, then a bouncy and shifting bassline yielding a relentless rhythmic pattern introduces a funky lead. It will later bring out a clever blend of intricate tasty, crispy, funky riffs conversing, echoing like distant voices which eventually evolve in gentle, then softly echoing harmonies.

5/ Tranan – In To Paradise
Then comes Jonas Petterson, aka Tranan, but also of Logic Bomb and Hux Flux fame. One of Senix’s all time favourite producers. His track starts with a subterranenan ethnic voice opening a more than 2mn intro. It leads the way to a syncopated bass line, with a interesting variation in the break section, offering a strong, yet shifting rhythmical pattern for the hypnotic, undulating, intertwined wicked synth lines, creating a strong psychedelic touch, with a definite reminder of the Logic Bomb stuff. You’ll hear a lot of vocal snippets taken and transformed from the intro. Definitely the tranciest tune and a strong asset in this compilation.

6/ Oforia - Instant Food (Triptych rmx)
Senix commissioned a remixed version of this classic track from Oforia, released at Hommega on the high octane Full on 7 compilation. Triptych has woven a fat, rubbery, oscillating bass line, put some strong synth chords on top of glittering fragments of the original voice sample to maximize the effect of the mesmerizing melody that runs along the track. Compared to the original, we lose the crispy aspects of the first half that contrasted with the softer tonality of the melody, but gain in linearity and epic/melodic vein.

7/ Elec 3 - No Time To Chill
Elec 3 are the prodigal producers Igal Magitman and Roman Brisker, also known for being prolific composers of prog-house/prog-electro under their real names. It seems that these guys are on fire these days, judging by the number of tracks they are releasing. “No time to chill” is very appropriately titled, and definitely the most “full on” track of this compilation, running at 145 bpm. It’s a dance floor stomper, typical of their style, intertwining loops of strong distorted Wizzy-wha-wha leads, on top of a hard pounding bass/kick drum combo. Add to that a strong-impact break, and you get dance floor frenzy guaranteed.

8/ Prosper - Crystal Falls
Prosper is Serbian producer Nikola Vujnovic, formerly known as Manibus, with two artist albums already at ZMA and earlier last year at Exposure. Although unfolding a bit slower at 143 bpm, we have yet another full on sure-value. The track offers a strong electro-tinged lead creating a compelling rhythmic pattern, also discretely reminiscent of Wizzy sounds, with an interesting variety of atmospheric melodies in the first and then last half of the track, cooling off a bit the onslaught of rhythmic fury.

9/ Tranan - Preacher Boy (Silicon Sound rmx)
Johannes Régnier aka Silicon Sound is a talented and respected producer, whose music has earned him worldwide recognition. His expert and broad musical taste has led him to develop, next to his morning trance project, another side project with Jaia, named Even 11, dedicated to the prog house/prog electro genre. For his solo project, he is currently working on an album to be relased at Neurobiotic. For this compilation, he was commissioned to produce a remixed version of the classic “Preacher Boy” by Tranan, released in 2002 at the late and truly regretted Spiral Trax. The original was an unforgettable piece of Scando psychedelia, with massive subs, relentless mechanical thrust and elliptic glittering riffs.
Johannès has stripped off the granite bass from the original rhythmic combo, made it gently oscillating, added some percussive treatment with a soft, punctuating snare, kept the echoing riff raff theme, and has added, with a Roland synth, some atmospheric, luminous pads, subtly evoking Vangelis’ music. We now have an even more morning groover, smoothly unfolding typical Silicon Sound harmonies, and another great rmx from Johannes, who had already done a great job on Pixel’s RPNGC (Neurobiotic). If you dig this one, look for more rmx of Altom and… Antix from the maestro, to be released later this year.

Bottom line:

Arguably the best Accelerator release, intelligently asserting the Turbo Trance sonic identity. Certainly a nicely varied and quality-laden compilation, catering to a wide range of musical tastes from dance floor stompers to morning groovers, with original and trendy electro-tinged sounds. The discerning listener as well as the DJ should be satisfied and give this compilation their blessing urbi et Turbo.
Your reviewer confesses a soft spot for, in order of appearance, GBU, Triptych feat Senix, Shanti (!), Tranan (!),Oforia (Triptych rmx), Tranan (Silicon Sound rmx !).

indeed a very good compilation
big up to senix and TTR crew for this smashing release
my heart goes for the tranan remix of silicon sound and the oforia remix by triptych (the best oforia track ever imho)
loved a lot too the shanti, hope he will continue to deliver tracks like this one (less fluffy than his latest stuff), the elec3, the GBU is also a very good one (smooth and groovy)
congrats to senix and triptych for their funky and groovy track

a VA to have absolutely !

Title: Accelerator 4.0 - compiled by Senix
Label: Turbo Trance Records
Format: CD
Released: March 2007

Review:

The French label Turbo Trance Records was started back in 2000, and has since the opening put its mark on the psychedelic trance scene with a quite respectable list of releases, ranging from EP's by Triptych, Hyper Frequencies and Neuromotor to full-length albums by Triptych, Elec3 and Mumbo Jumbo and a bunch of compilations as well. "Accelerator" is one of the labels series of compilations, and it has just reached version 4.0. Where the first 3 were compiled by DJ L'elf, DJ Beka and Triptych, the 4th version is compiled by the French label-DJ Senix, and it contains 9 tracks and remixes - all previously unreleased.

01. Manmademan - Escape [138 BPM]
First track is from the UK-based duo Manmademan, who's been a part of the psychedelic trance scene since the early days, with releases on influential labels like Matsuri, Flying Rhino, Transient, Phantasm, Iboga, Nano, BNE, TIP.World and Flow. Despite their fine resume, I've never really been a huge fan of their sound, but "Escape" is certainly a really good tune. Running at 138 BPM, and with a bouncy, yet rolling intense bassline, big trancy pads and kind of old school influenced melodies. Fantastic opener.

02. GBU - Big Tone Blasted [140 BPM]
Up next is the well-known collaboration The Good, The Bad & The Ugly, or in short GBU, consisting of Dado (Deedrah, Transwave, Synthetic), Serge (The Antidote, Total Eclipse) and DJ Dimitri Nakov. GBU is a very groovy track - more bouncy than most of the stuff on their recent album, but maintaining the quality that made that particular album one of the best full on releases last year in my opinion. Funky dancefloor track.

03. Triptych feat Senix – Hot Track [142 BPM]
French Triptych collaborate with DJ Senix on "Hot Track", which is obviously a remix of Gwen Stefanis "What You Waiting For?" - Triptych really has a unique touch with his funky, uplifting club-full on, but the quality of this track is certainly debatable. Some will cringe when the vocals come on, other will take it as a cheeky attempt to make something genuinely fun for the dancefloor - I guess it depends on my mood how well I like it.

04. Shanti – Flight Of The Phoenix [142 BPM]
Shanti Matkin, also known as Juvenile, is up next with "Flight Of The Phoenix" - a well-produced, likeable track, which doesn't really do anything fresh though. Good, wholesome morning full on in the usual Shanti style, that I could easily imagine playing at the right set and setting, but it wont win any awards for originality.

05. Tranan – In To Paradise [143 BPM]
Swedish Johan Petterson, one half of Logic Bomb, is up next with his soloproject Tranan. It starts out with an over 2 minute long and moody Shpongle-esque intro, before setting into a bouncy groove - certainly with more than just a hint of the Logic Bomb sound from "Unlimited". Add to that some deep, mysterious melodies and you have a track that'll bring back some sweet memories.

06. Oforia - Instant Food (Triptych Remix) [144 BPM]
Frances Triptych appears once again - this time with a remix for Oforias "Instant Food", released a few years ago on "Full On 7" from HOMmega. This version is a lot more crisp and uplifting compared to the original - the old one was very morning oriented as well, but this is even more euphoric, and contains some of Triptychs well-known clever, groovy twists along the way. Will undoubtedly a bit too cheesy for some people, but I like it.

07. Elec 3 - No Time To Chill [145 BPM]
"No Time To Chill" is by the Israeli duo Elec3 - an act who is at the moment causing huge waves in the progressive house scene with their sideproject Brisker & Magitman. This is straight on full on trance though, just as on their album released on Turbo Trance last year, and although it doesn’t really hold up to the stand out tracks here, it is quite above the usual standard for the style.

08. Prosper - Crystal Falls [143 BPM]
The Serbian producer Prosper, who recently released an album on Exposure Productions, follow up with "Crystal Falls". Stylistic, this is quite close to the sound Elec3 is making, meaning straight on full on with a slight hint of electro and trance - very uplifting and clubby, with sparkly crystal melodies. If you liked his last album, this will be right down your alley as well.

09. Tranan - Preacher Boy (Silicon Sound Remix) [138 BPM]
Last but not least we have Silicon Sound remixing Tranans "Preacher Boy". Calling the original would be something of an overstatement, but it did get a lot of airplay back when it was released 5 years ago, and this rework certainly does the original a lot of justice. It's running at 138 BPM, and is sort of like a fusion between the rolling, fluid full on Silicon Sound sound, and more progressive ass-shaking grooves. Splendid remix!

Bottom line:

Senix really did a great job on this compilation - sure, you won't find the most forward-thinking contemporary psychedelic trance here, but for the genre, this is certainly one of the better releases out there at the moment. If you're looking for some great, uplifting morning full on, and don't mind the occasional genre-crossing to oldschool psychedelic trance and newschool progressive trance, this release will do just the trick.

Favourites:

1 (!), 2 (!), 5 (!), 6, 9 (!!)

Verdict:

8/10

i think u made some kind of confusion in this coment . why chacota ? maybe u talking about hot track but for me its not chacota man. its remix of famous track , but its a good remix , very creative. OForia remix will be never a chacota , its serious track with a lot of melodies .

some great tracks in here, this is becoming so rare in the full on market these days...
my favourites are the gbu, great music and huge sound!
the triptych & senix wich i find very entertaining , it has a very nice groove and great synths and as usual with charles the sound is very big and tight.sounds like an outdoor festival hit to me , pure fun!
i also dig very much the tranan, wich is a pure old school logic bomb revival with a more recent approach on the groove.much better than his tracks on his album in my opinion
and the silicon sound rmx gives a fresh lifting to an old classic, the bassline is fucking great! once again here the sound is really big.

great work mr senix for collecting such monsters!!!!

Indeed a great cd!!! Superb production and selection!

My highlights:

1)Triptych rmx for Oforia: what a production!! This is what I would call MASSIVE!

2)Silicon Sound rmx for Tranan: well, one of my fav tracks ever(Preacher Boy) now with superb sound quality!! As Side-A said, here the bassline is HUUUGE!!!! Perfect rolling full-on bassline working for a progressive tune!

3)GBU: how can they make so huge track with this kick??? lol

I also liked the Elec3 and "Hot Track", but not same level as the top 3!

This compilation is a mix between pop, electro & trance...Some will see something psy, others absolutely not, it's the charm of music : a question of personnal feelings and subjective points of views.

Thanks to all for feedbacks ans especially Aden & Profane for reviews.

All I need is beautiful melodies...

i still havent hear all tracks from cd, but gbu made pretty revolutionary track... very very good, and i really think that the kick is not the thing about u can judge is it psychedelic track or not... all artists in fullon uses only 2-3 kinds of kick... if u ask me, its not so good.

waiting to hear other tracks, im very curious about elec3 and silicon rmx...           http://www.PROSPER-MUSIC.COM

I think u misunderstood me dude...

I didn´t say anything about being or not psychedelic. I´m just amazing about how GBU always managed to use this kind of kick(softer, but wider than "fullon kick").           LOADING...
