Ultimae - Chill Out CD's pressing limitations

Hi everyone
I've recently really got into downtempo and chill out music, and Ultimae label has quickly climed on top of my priority list.

I absolutely love their emotional, relaxed style. Just got Asura's Life Squared and it's amaising. I probably like this one the best of all Asura albums.

Asura are really masters of putting emotion into music. You really can feel joy or sadness in their tracks.

Carbon Based Lifeforms are another favorite of mine and along with Aes Dana rank high on the list of my favorite chill out acts.

Unfortunately there are a few CD's I have a real hard time tracking down. For some reason ambient labels love to limit their pressings which I don't quite understand if there is demand from people to buy.
FAX is I guess one of the first labels to do that, Sending Orbs does it too and now unfortunately (for me) Ultimae did it as well.
Why is this such a trend in ambient circles?
Why labels limit their pressings to such small numbers if the demand from people to buy is bigger? I'm sure FAX can sell more than a few hundred copies of their CD's but still they limit the number of copies pressed.

I was wondering if any of you guys can help me out.

I'm looking for Aes Dana - Season 5, Aes Dana - Aftermath and H.U.V.A. Network - Distances CD's.
I think some of these can be downloaded online but I'd really like a full uncompressed quality sound with the artwork etc. Crappy mp3 will not do the justice to this music.
Feel free to PM me if you can halp me track these down.
Anyways, looking forward to hearing what the veterans of chill out scene have to say about the pressing limitations

I'm definitely glad Interchill is not like that. In their case if you like something, you got a legit chance to buy it instead of wondering in some obscure online topics like this one hoping someone has a spare copy
When you think about it, even if someone did sell me one, the artists themseves get no royalty.

try e bay, amazon... or contact the label to see if they have any copies with slightly damaged covers / no shrinkwrap

thanks for being passionate about searching for the music you want... labels need more people like you

we have loads of albums that are no longer available and not available on digital... the deal is that it is very challenging to meet existing commitments and also keep moving forward...

repressing an album can often rob the label of much needed short term cash flow... and may not be an option due to contract terms being finished.

the cd is now a collector's item

Thanks Andrew

Should I tell Ultimae guys you sent me so they search a little bit harder than they would otherwise? You never know pulling some strings might work

j/k of course

I'm missing a few Interchill releases so we might talk business if I don't manage to track 'em down.

Less and less people buy cds nowadays = labels print less and less copies

It's not fun when you have to pay >$30 (my personal limit) to get cd you want.

You have to be patient and spend a lot of time to look for those cds ... (a few days ago "Distances" by HUVA was sold on ebay for $5.99 and I missed it by few seconds )

So ... good luck!

visine... the ultimae guys are as passionate about music as anyone... so if they have a copy with a damaged cover or no shrinkwrap i'm sure they'll help. contact@ultimae.com

i have loads of kaya project - "walking through" with smashed cases... box was dropped when shipped... so i can offer them for 8US plus shipping if you're interested.

i can also offer old interchill vinyl for a good price - shipping is v expensive though.

email andrew@interchill.com if you're interested

The CD is indeed a collector's item... a relic of the last century.

.MP3 is cheap and tacky.

Ableton Live and .FLAC and .WAV ..and hopefully higher-quality formats is the way forward.

Yes, you can search for years and willing to pay any
sum of money (reasonably) for something you are
looking for. For example, it took me 2 years to track
Aes Dana's Season 5 CD. But o boy, was I happy?

Some ALBUMS (means CLASSIC stuff) will be always
in demand. It's not about MP3 invasion. It's about
people like me and I am sure a lot of others who
adore their collections of really great music including
artwork which needs to be appreciated no less.

I am talking about labels like Fax, Emit, Ultimae, LSD, Interchill, artists like Biosphere, Global Communication, Aes Dana and a lot of others.

This is not the mainstream music and it will be always
in demand. But this is what cool about it: find something you want and be happy for a while and
start to look for something else.

My advise to Visine is the same: spend a lot of time
searching for what you want and you will get it.
And it's a lot of new artists in chill/ ambient/ IDM,
who are making the great music. Buy CD while it
last.

I totally hear you man. I've got a pretty good collection of Trance with lots of great music some of which are now next to impossible to find rarities. Of course I picked up a few chill out releases along the way but now as I'm getting more and more into this sound part of me is kind of afraid to dive into the rarity world deep because my wallet could hardly stand the beating from the Trance side of things let alone another genre
I definitely feel like Ambient is getting more and more playtime in my CD player. I don't know exactly why but it just seems like it's a perfect music to play when you come home tired from a busy day at work. Maybe it's because I got a much better soundsystem and chill out music isn't so concerned with lower frequency "boom boom" effect for the dancefloor, resulting in much more evenly spread sound spectrum so you really can enjoy those little intricate details in the comfort of your home....or maybe I'm just getting older and need to slow down

One thing I really don't understand exactly is why are the ambient labels so inclined to limit their pressing to a few hundred copies. How do you even break even if you only press 200-300 CD's?

I already ordered that Farenheit Project 4 reprint but thanks for trying to help. Any idea where to find no 3?
That's the only one I'll be missing in that series once the latest shipment arrives. I'll put my 2 cents into that topic. Thanks for the link
