This is an open letter to all those amateur photographers who seem to attend every trance party I've been to. Now, don't get me wrong, I love a good snapshot now and then. But not every five minutes, not in the middle of the dance floor, not in my face while I'm dancing. Don't flash the DJ every second of their set, this is not Wild On for the E! Network. And honestly, I don't give a rats ass if you just got that new 12 mega pixel super zoom ultra flash, all those pictures you took on my dance time will come out dark, blurry and sloppy. Dance to the music and make memories in your brain paparazzi, stop trying to get THE BEST shot for your blog or your website. I call for stricter rules regarding cameras at parties, maybe one or two people with cameras taking pictures with promoter’s permission and taking care to be out of the way and paying attention to timing and dance floor conditions. Thank You

well it is a catch-22. yes, having a flash bulb go off in one's eye whilst "having a moment" on the dancefloor is sooooooo distracting, but then after the fact everyone's always clamoring "where are the pics?" "wasn't anyone taking pictures?" cuz they wanna remember it after the fact.

you're joking right?..after every single event i see posts EVERYWHERE asking for pictures who has pictures i wanna see the pictures. i know Cam is always getting hit up for his pictures he gets asked for them from every event he is at by both people that are there and people that are not there. in fact Cam's pictures of the parties are everywhere on the net, on Tribe, on Myspace, on promoters web pages, EVERYWHERE

In a perfect world, a world built on trust and mutual respect, harsh rules and strict policies would be obsolete. But we don't live in a world where those qualities are held high on the list of human virtues, whether it's at a trance event or anywhere else. In a fairy tale, everyone who would attend an event like a psychedelic trance gathering would be aware of themselves and others, be warm and understanding, careful and honest.
By the way, a free party is open season, I don’t care if there’s freaky trigger happy camera gnomes running around with a group of dwarfs and a camel eating an apple in the corner, it's a free event and you get what you pay for. When you have an event that costs money, you become a consumer in one way or another, and as a consumer one has to understand what they are paying for.
I love a good photo as well, but we're taking the mystery out of what it's all about. Imagine a party WITHOUT camera flash, no pictures of it, it makes it so much more personal and intimate. It feels underground and un-tainted by overexposure. Anyone have pictures from that party? No? Oooooh, how special and personal that makes it...anyway.

Well said Nasos!

I hate cameras too, but what I hate more is video cameras, like the one at TDC's Iguana party at Club 7. To the older gentleman with one leg who's name I don't know, but have much respect for and who I see often at these places: please stop recording everyone while they're dancing. You can record your wife or gf but don't record us. I like to have my privacy and anonymity and don't want to wind up on some website or in someone's VCR being watched. I'm a private individual as I'm sure many others are too. So you must respect that and the fact that not everyone wants to be in your videos.           If you ever find yourself being ripped apart by a pack of wolves, try not to scream. Everbody knows wolves can smell fear.

at a paying event most of th etime the photographers pay as well as everyone else...so are you saying that they should not enjoy their money by taking photos. maybe the fire dancers should use tennis balls instead of fire i might get burnt

yeah, its an interesting debate actually. cameras can often feel invasive and flashy yet i love seeing the pics afterwards. hmmm, maybe take a look at the burning man "guidelines" for media, it brings up many good points about the right of the participant and the photographers namely:
"One of the abiding principles of Burning Man is that participants do not interfere with the immediate experience of other participants. As a member of the media, you are expected to be respectful and comport yourself accordingly. If you do, your coverage will be far more authentic and meaningful."

"You have the right to express yourself and create art as a photographer, videographer and/or audio artist."
and
"You have the right to ask someone to stop taking a picture of you, recording your image or recording your voice in any way. However, keep in mind the nature of radical self-expression, capturing expression is a form of self-expression.
You have the right to know what someone plans to do with your image. "
for more: http://www.burningman.com/press/pressRandR.html

if you are taking pictures its always best to ask permission of the subject. if you are being photographed and you don't like it, you can always ask the photographer to stop.

Peace!

by the way don't get me wrong, i love looking at pictures of parties from all over the world. The point I'm trying to make is tact and timing, care and respect. And I love that the regressing NYC trance scene is getting a helthy psy injection of undergroundesque parties from promoters and organizers that seem to be doing it for all the right reasons, it gives us hope and fills our hearts with inspiration. Peace!

If a fire dancer shoves the torch in my face, then we have a problem. If someone does not respect my personal space, we have a problem. Yes the people with cameras pay for the ticket just like I did, but I came to dance and cast my spirit into the depth of time, music and space. The photo guy came to take pictures of me and others during their most intimate time, without asking permission or waiting for the most amazing part of the track to be over, they will stand right in the middle of the dance floor and take their time to focus and then flash, flash double flash. I dream a dance floor of unity, a mass of people dancing to one rhythm, breathing in unity to the eternal beat. On my dream dance floor there is no place for small talk conversation during a set, while there are people dancing, take it to the sidelines, get up against the wall and make room for dancing. I don't get to dance with like-minded individuals in large numbers most of my week; I got a job and worldly crap that stresses me out. I can talk on a street or in a coffee bar; I can snap pictures all day long at the park. I can stand and listen to music in my room. The PARTY is where I can DANCE to amazing NEW music, let go and enjoy the atmosphere with great people who smile back at me as we go further every time we do it. I hope some part of what I'm saying will resonate with some who will see where I'm coming from. Everything could be so much more if we remember what it is we do it for. OK, I'm done for this thread. Dance 2 Trance! yee haw

nasos has a point , because like everything else , it seems like this is getting out of hand , so maybe his post may spread some sensibility to the paparrazzi , and be more humble polite and discrete with their shootings , balance is everything in anything

I say no cameras if you are a cop, as 4 everyone else - - as long as you post them or give them to me so I can see them!

and never, ever take a picture of anything illegal but nonviolent, no matter who you are. Never know where that picture might end up.

but seriously "strict rules" i dont know about anyone else but one of my favorite aspects of this scene is the freedom and i agree that its slightly rude but rules?? great idea lets also outlaw glow sticks that swing near you people that are trying to get through the crowd and bump you how about we banish bad mixing punishment to all who dont comply .... see how rediculous this is its just a part of going out you dont want it throw your own parties only invite who you want there and dont participate im sorry that was an upsurd comment are we gonna start putting the rules on the fliers and punishing anyone who doesnt obey wow sounds a bit more in trusive than picture taking so calm down if you are truly lost in the moment a flash isnt gonna bring you back and if you arent that far you should be able to get back so based on the respect and civility expected at these parties if somebody does something to bother you you approch them and baheave in the manner of the higher level of thinkers we are supposed to be talk to them request they please stop with the flash and go on with it nothing itelligent about this anger so if the photographer were to ask your permission before your intimate moments would you be ok with it and if the photographer didnt ask ahead of time they would miss the best shots that benefit the scene and fulfill their interests how about if they saw an intimate moment and came up and asked you ill bet that would disturb you a bit more than a flash from a distance just be civil and continue instead of making demands or pointless bitching and by the way with a flash they wont turn out blurry if the focus is correct and the photgraphers arent trying to get the best photo for a blog they are trying to freeze an amazing moment in time and share it with others who couldnt be there to experience it to bring others who have never experienced it and to help document past events a seeing as the human memory is flawed so just relax you do your thing theyll do theirs if you got a problem try to solve it like the somewhat advanced creatures that we are
