check this one:

http://dancemusic.about.com/library/weekly/aa021400.htm

seems like the dude who wrote it doesn't like trance too much :"It is traditional, but not obligatory, to have at least one sample from a cheesy 50s Sci-Fi film or Star Trek sample per track. "All channels and frequencies clear", "The electrons do it to the neutrons, the neutrons do it to themselves", kind of thing. "

but atleast he is optimistic:"It's evolution and popularity attest to its strength as a genre, and its ability to carry a crowd dancing into a euphoric communal state will carry it onward and upward to its next incarnation."

oh yah!

this might help at well:

I noticed one odd thing. Someone who says the word trance can mean either an "underground" psytrance act, like Shiva Chandra or anyone else. Another person could mean Ian Van Dahl, played heavily on the radio.

Not as much but it's same with Progressive and Tech-trance. There is progressive psytrance and progressive (melodic?) trance, and tech-trance psy and tech-trance melodic(?)           Ut ameris, amabilis esto.

I don't know what about you, but for me there is not such dilema like trance genres ... I love all kinds of trance music and there are no differences for me as it is progressive or minimal or even tech.
The meaning of the trance is not to be grouped by genres, but to be fun for people listening it.           Always remember you're unique, just like everyone else.

it's a very difficult question man - dont get deep to this

there are so many and if you hear a track you can say it's progressive with psy elements or techno trance with progressive sounds or or or .......

the answer is very simple
truly there are no genres.

electronic music (in general) is a young art, the posibilities are infinite and the accesability of new artists to the tools (synths, computers ect..) is high.

the resalts are very varied genres and styles.
every artist can find his own way to express himself, and the morer the merrier.

when people ask me (especialy orgenizers) about the music my group makes, i realy don't know what to tell them.
we never try to hit a certain "type" of music, we just do music, that's all.

the tags that people want to put on art creation in order to put it in a little box with a name on it are just an old habbit.
forget it, let it go, it holds ur creativity back and puts u into paterns.

The reason i asked this question was because I saw many posts talking about Full-On, and Minimal and stuff like that, and i wanted to know what was all those defenitons... that's all

most of you saying that genres is a bad thing... but it can also be a very good thing
sometimes restrictions can help your creativity...

i'll give you an example that my Jazz Music History teacher at school gave me:

sit next to a piano
now I tell you that you can play everything
you can hit every note you want and i
improvise. without scales or something.
now it's a bit hard to decide what to do, right?

now I'll restrict you to only 1 octave,
play anything you want there.
and it's alot easier

so back to the subject,
genres can be helpful
also look in classical music: there are Concertos, Sonatas, Symphonies, etc...
and they all have the same rules and restrictions, and still, very beautiful music came out of those limited forms.

and don't think i'm so limited to genres, I mean, i like metal, and my favourite metal groups (Opeth, Children of Bodom, Evenfall) are hard to categorize in specific metal geners.

hm...
techno trance is about repetitive rythems and hard beat. but in a trance structure and usuly has some psychedelic elements.
ex. x-dream, the delta, pps project, tribal tul, boo-reka

progressive has a smooth sublte beat and a progressive structure which means the storyline progresses by adding another sound until the "explosion"
ex. cosma, ticon, tegma, son kite, trancefeld.

minimal is just minimal
its about placing the samples, precussion and effects just in the perfect place while keeping everything in a minimum.
ex. http://forum.isratrance.com/viewtopic.php?topic=7868&forum=5&18

in full on, the artists puts everthing he got on a track. full on tracks have a unique bassline and those tracks are made especially for parties.
ex. astrix, gms, safi connection, atomic pulse, 1200 mics, esxs.

note that some tracks can be (for ex.) both progressive and full on (something which is very popular lately). which means that the track has both progressive and full on elements.

ps. i have 0 writing skills

I definitely disagree with you that full on is for parties(this is how it is in israel)

i think techno music is much more powerful, rhytmic and danceable

Itay, i have the same question like you. But it's a little different. I guess, i can see the difference between full-on and progressive, but minimal is still a mistery for me...

Don't forget goa... also called oldschool or melodic trance.
It's psychedelic music with some elements of full on and progressive, but constructed as a "melody" (as beautiful as classical music IMO!) - sometimes music stops and a beautiful slow melody comes in, ending in a explosion of sound.

However, it's cheesy for some people, i understand that

Ex: Chi-AD, Astral Projection, Infected Mushroom,...

How infected isn't goa? Goa is not the same as psytrance? These definitions are too broad, how can we now what the hell we're talking about?

Psytrance styles are not easy to define. Dividing in styles is too confusing, because there are thousand styles (trance, tech-trance, full on, goa, minimal, melodic, psy, progressive, hard trance, fat psychedelic groove, etc...)

I think some of these styles are synonymous. But there isn't a "official definition". For example, what's the difference between hard trance and techno trance?
