bay area/west coast freaks:

anybody know anything about the tonka sound system, or what happened to it? i moved out here too late to see it myself, but i'm just curious. from what i gather it was made by a crew from england who threw renegade parties late 80's early 90's, and then moved to SF. i'd kinda just like to see what the damn thing looked like, supposedly it was ridiculous.

what does it take to make a moster like that? that would be a fun weekend project, he he           sound is vibration

Last time I heard that system was at Fusion Festival 2001 at Angel's Camp, northern cal.
(imo, the best festival there ever was on the west coast)

thats what i'd heard as well. rumour has it they (whoever *they* are) since sold the thing, except who buys something like that?

off-topic, they need another fusion festival, just with a way to not lose money           sound is vibration

I heard (and saw) it at Burning Man 2001. It certainly was a good system but I wouldn't say it's head-and-shoulders above any other professional system. The best systems i've heard are a couple of Turbo Sound systems, one was the Xara system at Burning Man, the other at a club in Baltimore; it took whatever I threw at it and it reproduced it faithfully, only 1000000 times more powerful than the output jack of my laptop.

I was fortunate enough to actually attend a rave that was heard through Tonka's system....
Houston Texas , 2000...I think either April or August (It's been a while...)
The entire system occupied one entire wall of the Astroplex, and three adjoining room had their own smaller version of the main rooms Wall o' Sound.
Rediculous or not....twas something to be in awe of.

and while we are speaking of sound systems, any of you fellas ever hear of MOTHER?
We had a club here in Houston (now long since closed, and re-opened undert new management) that used compressed air horns in addition to your classic cabinet speakers to move the crowd..."mother" was the (loving?) Psuedoname for the system.

I disagree. The Funktion One system didn't impress me that much when I played at Spirit in August. I think that the sound was better when the venue was Twilo.

The best soundsystem I've ever heard is at The Paradox in Baltimore, MD. So clean - thick bass - great stereo image.

Truly amazing.

I've seen my share of huge systems at Burningman.. like the 100+kW Turbosound system in '99 for X-Dream. Or the 50kW true surround SOL System 2 years ago..

Just this year I heard at least a dozen 30kW + systems there - Yorkville, Turbosound, JBL, Community, EAW, Mackie, and others.. really good way to compare different sound quality. My favorite was the Turbosound system, with Yorkville a close second. The rest are pretty comparable. imo.

btw, most of that Yorkville system is now in Colorado.

yee-haw!!!

The Turbosound is Xara's system, the 4 EV's belong to Mutaytor. yeah, that morning Treavor Moontribe restored my faith in full-on. I was dancing all the way until they shut down at 2pm. My feet hurt so bad..

heh.. sorry, boss.

just seems that nobody really knows what happened to the original Tonka system, which is a bummer.

I am curious, though, what kind of sound different trance collectives around the US use for their parties. I've heard the JBL system from LA, and it's really sweet. The system at 2003 Omnidance was really good also - but I think they rented it. Anyway, this might warrant a whole new topic..
