The SOGfiles MMVI are with us from SOG Records which features loads of tracks from the label with a focus on one particular artist or artists. This series pays its attention to Israel’s Roman Brisker & Igal Magitman as they bath in the success of their productions this year. They have released tracks on Babylon, Method and Candyflip as well as getting a call up on the recent Renaissance compilation by Hernan Cattaneo.

Brisker & Magitman start things off with Silly thoughts as it combines a futuristic blend of squeaks and bleeps with a gritty, driving baseline. Adding to the mixture is a pulsating melody which is quite overpowering while subtle melodies roll up and down the scales. Uplifting yet serious at the same time.

Bringing on a lighter feel is 36dd as we see a bouncy electro groove join an array of elusive melodies in the foreground. The electro melody evolves into a catchy pattern as it leads into the breakdown and fly’s solo. The melody is then mixed with a more filtered baseline that remains distorted and dirty but it’s the varied melodies that give this track an epic feel.

Aikon strips things down with solid drums, simple baselines and plenty of various haunting samples, while smooth, rolling melodies create the mood. A tinge of electro within the panning melody adds a little jump, while sullen sounds blend underneath perfectly.

Moving onto Rush and the tune lives up to its title. Starting off with a huge stabbing electro melody that seems to be a trademark from this duo and is teamed up with a simple female vocal that appears at the peaks. The tough electro melody is a mainstay throughout and is accompanied at times with playful melodies that seem to distort and sink.

Brisker & Magitman turn in their Startlight mix of Spex ‘Asteroid’ and goes straight for the jugular with a big room analogue melody that constantly vibrate, while filtered, sustained synths and organic noises slip through unnoticed. There is no letting up until the last moment.

Keenan & Dale’s ‘Drift Away’ featuring ENDC gets remixed by Stel & Goodnewz showcasing a devastating baseline that is extra heavy while quirky sprinklings of stringed and synth melodies keep things moody. A filtered male vocal plays out with little emotion and lets the melodies do the talking.

Seven Sisters turn in their mix of Walsh & Coutre’s ‘Murders of Sin’ which sees them take things deep with a great baseline that holds a little groove while soothing atmospherics and echoing effects create loads of mood. Patches of cut up vocals get a little filter action and feature nicely in the breakdown with gorgeous chords and a heavily effected baseline.

NOP comes to us now with Retouch The Moon as it display a little tech compared to the others with a lively electro melody and crisp high hats and snares. This tune holds a serious groove as it bounces over rising and falling synths, though a lot of credit goes to the melody which is contagious.

Glamour To Kill’s ‘In Your Eyes’ sees in Greed’s $2 Ho mix with the title doing this track justice. Starting off slowly, the hint of a building riff creeps upwards and as things take off, guitar and baseline madness blow up with a monotone male vocal in tow singing the lyrics from Kylie Minogue’s track of the same name. The guitar riffs are used throughout with different effects and volumes and add bigger emphasis on the peaks.

For prog fans this is a must. Extreme care from the SOG boys has been taken with this release. All tracks possess high quality production with loads of variation in sound to keep you happy.

Ok thanks. Hehehe, the track 36dd is a reference to pornstar Gianna, who has that breastsize. She's pretty hot by the way.           "Subconscious unravels at the point of death, and all time it has known erupts into a moment. As death extinguishes us, so we become it."

Yeah, I like 'em too. That Inception compilation by them on Groove Control Records is pretty great as well, and they've also done some great remixes. Just ordered this particular album tuesday, so I should be able to review it in more detail soon.           "Subconscious unravels at the point of death, and all time it has known erupts into a moment. Fantastic release. The 5 Brisker/Magitman productions are great.

If you have brought it be sure and read the inner sleeve notes, they are the best i have ever read in a cd.

Ok, I listened to it in detail and I must say this is pretty good. Some tracks need to grow on me though. The 4 Brisker & Magitman tracks are superb, just what you'd expect from them, and tracks 5,7 are ok, but tracks 6,8 need more listening from me to appreciate I guess. And track 9... well, it's there. And you might wanna play it for a laugh or something, but superb this is definately not (those damn vocals). In short, it's a good compilation, certainly if you're in need for some more Brisker & Magitman tracks, but otherwise there are better fish out there in the sea of progressive nowadays, so if you haven't got that many money to spend, you might wanna listen to some other comps first before deciding to get this one.
