This started out as a reply to http://forum.isratrance.com/so-what-do-you-consider-full-on/
- but it kind of grew into a post on it's own. This is kind of an overview of full-on and various things about it - as given by the 3 sides of my personality, the little angel on my right shoulder, the little devil on my left, and my head in the middle trying to give it's original take. This is the first (and perhaps the only) installment of The Schizzophrenic Guide, an intellectual panel featuring Me, Me and Me.

---------------------------------------------------------

Angel Me: "Remember full-on? You haven't listened to it much lately. Don't you feel a bit of nostalgia?"

Devil Me (not giving a second of pause): "Don't you remember full-on? And why you didn't listen to it recently?"

My Head: "Sure I remember... just not quite my favorite style of psy. It has it's good as well as bad, but other styles I can just relate to better."

Angel Me: "That doesn't mean you need to ignore it. A lot of people aren't quite sure as to what it is, and you've been listening to it from the very start. Give that knowledge to others, it'll help. I'll even aid in organizing your thoughts, since I'm just feeling won-der-fulllll!" (takes a handkerchief and shines his halo)

Devil Me: "Shoryuken!" (dragon-punches Angel Me who smashes into wall and is left hanging off a nail by his halo).

My head: "wait, what?"

Devil Me: "Ohh, nothing. It's just that that horrible incestant noise ended. Let's make fun of stupid people! You know... People who like full-on."

My Head: "You can't just say all of them are idiots. As with Dark and Progressive, full-on started not as a genre, but as a description - full-on meant a no-holds-barred, all-about-the-energy attitude. That was the guiding light for the artists in the mid-to-late 90s, until it solidified itself as a genre on it's own. To me it'll always be about the dancefloor."

Angel Me (getting back to his place by my ear after regaining his composture): "Let me add, that after all those years, it was so refreshing - psytrance moving to the more accessible dancefloor concepts, being less about each person's own psychedelic experience and moving to a much more communal idea of everyone being moved together, not each on his own. So wonderful."

Devil Me: "Shut up, angel. You're acting as if we actually LIKE this crap. Time for some brutal honesty, which is the only kind do: as some may have surmised, it was before the Israeli translation of 'track rotzeah ahi' to 'killer track man' really caught on that the term full-on was first frequently used. Calling a genre that is like calling a genre 'Good Trance', which basically fits the intelligence level of the music. Not saying it's bad, I'm just saying people are dumb. If you like it, you probably are too. Don't you get it that the fact that major acts are all using the same formula is because they think you're the bunch of mindless robots that won't notice that they aren't trying to be creative anymore. THEY ARE LAUGHING AT YOU IN YOUR FACE AND YOU ASK FOR MORE... Good for them."

Angel Me: "Don't listen to him. Sure, it is not the intellectual masterpiece, then again, psytrance was never Bach. You danced with me to this music, I saw you."

Devil Me: "Yeah, hot chicks on MDMA are a good motivator. If you listen to enough full-on you'll get blowjobs all the time. Ohh wait. We went to parties and it was there, took drugs and danced because we were f%^*ing high, and that's the end of that. Well, that and sex in the bushes."

Head: "Shut up both of you. It's just music. Party thing. I like to dance."

Devil Me (brandishing a sharp knife as Angel Me cowers behind my head): "yeah yeah, I sent ya to those parties and you screwed hot chicks because of me. Play neutral all ya want, the Darth Vader truth holds, and yes, you do know the power."

Angel Me: "You liked it. You really did. Remember those days. You still do sometimes. It was never about the chicks or drugs. It was about exploring a different take on psytrance which you love so much. It's all about love."

(Devil Me stabs Angel Me in the head, repeatedly, while singing 'yay yay yay, blood blood blood, fun fun fun, killing time is now')

Devil Me: "True to when you were 17 years old. That's 199-f$@#ing-6, shame you never listened to me back then. Imagine all the fun times we could have had. I know what you like and sweaty raver hippy chicks are on that list. If they meet my 'damn that's a hot body' standards."

My Penis: "Devil, this is my turf, stay away from that side of the arguement. And that's MY standard, not yours."

Devil Me: "Can't argue with my best buddy here. Carry on."

My Head (Angel Me reincarnates and says: "not the other one, the one that talked earlier!!!! You sick, sick, bastard. I can't believe you even thought that!"): "OK, let's get back to full-on as a description. Green Nuns of the Revolution are a perfect example as an act which I have heard described as full-on at the time, despite being as goatrance as it gets.
Some time later, Tim Schuldt (IMO, being the true pioneer of this genre) left the small tweaks and touches to others while thinking of how to pound as hard as possible and leave it at that (classic German rocker attitude)."

Devil Me: "Hah. Well, I can respect German goth ravers (aka gravers), but seriously, psytrance officially became the musically challenged and mildly retarded distant cousin of death metal (aka Darkpsy) because of that piece of shi..."

Angel Me (holding a smoking sawed off barrel shotgun, as Devil Me falls headless to the ground): "There was Koxbox's first forray in the style (Psychopod - Headlines EP), IMO, this is the single most influential release of all times in the style by these brilliant people. We can still hear the concepts in Friagram in full-on today over a decade since the original release (while Tim Schuldt's darker and more gothic style is still influencing the Darkpsy genre). Talk about standing the test of time, the print these guys left on the scene is irrefutable. They always kicked ass, and still do. Excellent music with a different perspective, and as with any other genre, the moments of brilliance make up for a lot of the lackluster things around."

My Head: "Wow, that's a lot you're talking, you usually sit tight and keep to the point."

Angel Me (whistling innocently and hiding the shotgun behind his back): "Ohh, I like civilized conversation a lot."

(My Head gets a puzzled look and pauses for a second, trying to figure out what's wrong)

Head: "Where were we? Ohh yeah, GMS later took the lead in the genre, and slowly elements from other subgenres of psytrance entered while others were removed as the style evolved, but the final incarnation of full-on was started by the addition of the Israeli acts."

Angel Me: "The attempt for a fat bass and wall-of-sound richness all the way through was a concept foreign to the..." (Devil Me appears in a cloud of smoke behind Angel Me, and pushes him forward into a woodchipper... bits of blood, bone and halo splash everywhere).

Devil Me: "Remember Nitzhonot, a genre were the artists proudly made fun of their crowd. Track names like Misra Maluk didn't stop the tracks from being big hits - for all you non-Hebrew speakers and people who didn't figure it out, read backwards it's "Kulam Arsim", meaning everyone's a redneck/badmeister/whatever the local version of stereotypical weapon-totting wannabe tough-guy idiot. Incorporation of some Nitzhonot elements (massive breakdowns, MDMA based melodies and leaving behind of the tweaky psychedelia), the near 100% rolling bassline per track ratio, abd keeping the beats to a very simple kick-based groove that anyone can pick up with ease. Yup. Aiming very f$^*ing low. That's what it's all about. People will say you're elitist if you listen to me but guess what: ELITE MEANS SOMETHING GOOD. You only insult others by calling them elitist if you wanna screw with them a bit."

My head: "You may have a point there. Ironically enough, a lot of full-on nowadays would be considered 'cheesy club stuff' by the people who originally used the term as a description (most of whom are not in the scene today, making their opinions irrelevant) - as the bass was not nearly as important then in what people define as 'powerful'. But hey - every genre has it's ups and downs. And don't forget the raver chicks. Never forget those."

Devil Me: "Good point. Need to look out for my buddy down there, since halo-boy doesn't. Good riddance."

My Head: "Where did he go?"

Devil Me: "... he's just... you know.... all around the place."

My Head: "Fair enough."
