Well to give U some idea, here is some recent news from the place:

Zimbabwe police burn 6-mile line of vendors' stalls
Monday, May 30, 2005 Posted: 3:21 PM EDT (1921 GMT)

HARARE, Zimbabwe (AP) -- Police continued demolishing thousands of shacks and vendors' kiosks in opposition strongholds Monday, burning a 10-kilometer (six-mile) long line of curio stalls along the road near Victoria Falls.

A spokesman for the main opposition Movement for Democratic Change party called the crackdown tyranny and urged the people to resist. Lawyers for the party sought a court order Monday that banned police from demolishing shacks and kiosks and demanding compensation for the owners of buildings destroyed in what the government calls a campaign to clean up the cities.

Thousands of street traders have been arrested and their wares seized or destroyed since the May 19 start of the crackdown, which the government has described as an urban renewal campaign.

Police using torches, sledgehammers and bulldozers have also burned and demolished the homes of the urban poor in informal settlements around the country.

"We call on all Zimbabweans to mobilize against this assault on their dignity, livelihoods and well being," said Themba-Nyathi, defying tough new security laws that provide a 20-year prison term for anyone trying to "coerce" President Robert Mugabe's government.

"We shall overcome this tyranny," he said.

During the weekend, residents in some informal settlements put boulders across a maze of side roads in a futile attempt to keep police and security forces out. However, there were no reports of rioting in any of the townships where police demolished and burned shacks.

In the resort town of Victoria Falls, police burned a 10-kilometer (six-mile) line of curio stalls and claimed to have confiscated a large amount of stolen or illegally imported goods.

In the eastern city of Mutare, police said they arrested an American, identified only as Howard Smith Gilman, under media laws for allegedly covering the destruction of 9,000 illegal structures there. Zimbabwe's media laws make it illegal to operate without a license.

MDC legislator Trudi Stevenson said in the preceding 24 hours police had "at gunpoint" forced 2,000 more people in Hatcliffe Township in northern Harare to destroy their houses and leave. On Friday and Saturday, 7,000 were evicted, although they had lease agreements issued by Mugabe's government."

And today:
Tuesday May 31, 09:00 AM

"Zimbabwe's Government plans to nationalise all the country's farms, making private land ownership illegal.
A government spokesman has told state media that farmers will not be able to contest the seizure of their land under the nationalisation plans."

http://au.news.yahoo.com/050530/21/ujag.html

"D-Day for Zimbabwe's SW Radio Africa
05/31/2005 02:36:47
SW RADIO Africa which broadcasts into Zimbabwe from London could be doing its last broadcast today after it exhausted its budget trying to beat jamming devices used by the Zimbabwe government."

So the situation has gone from worse to insane. The international community has forsaken this nation.

I spent many a holiday in Zim - just camping and chilling hanging out in shebeens smoking mbjange drinking Zambezi listening to Thomas Mapfumo, some awesome places and generally very friendly people.

Its a pity its gone quite rad, but I believe it will come out of it once Bob goes to hell, and when it does I am prepared to truck up a sound system so we can party in the matopas.

There used to be a small house scene is Harare, but I think that's long gone.

==J@$0N==: There's this joke kinda;the South Africans said that ex-Zimbo's would always go on about stories and tales from "when we were back in Zim."So they called us "whenwe's".Except a friend of mine got it wrong once and said she knew another "wannabe"!!!

reminds me of this one former zim teacher i had at boarding school in natal... every time we got bored we started causing kak and he would then start with the usual old stories "you boys are lucky... when i was a young lad back in rhodesia... bla bla bla"! hilarious.
