If you want for production and you want the most neutral sound then active monitors should be what you should look for.
sorry, dont agree, imao you will never achieve a transparent sound with actives like you could with a passive system. i know what this means to spend (K&H is pretty cheap compared those solutions), but in fact you will not find decent monitoring system free of any colour in the usual price range. the only thing is the money behind. it means to spend hundred thousands of bucks just for your monitoring system, with some luck there are few bucks left for acoustics.
actives are only a solution so far, just think about PA systems. same there, the real shizZle is still passive, think about yourself why....
at the end i think it mostly depends on knowing your system. there are ppl out there doin their mix on ipod systems, so it´s really up to know your gear. if you know how it HAS to sound, any monitoring system will work quite fine. just need to know the goods and the bads and bare in mind.....
i won´t recommend any labels or stuff here except few things one should keep in mind if you´re looking for good speakers. if you intend to do the production AND the mixing/mastering on the same speakers (which i would not recommend, but usually ppl do, incl. me =D), i´d go first for some with minim. 8" woofers, usually these are able to give a nice and clear punch in lower freq. ranges without the need to be coloured by the amp or the crossover. this is with the common reason WHY the smaller ones sound coloured. they just need it.
if you got some money left i´d go for 3way monitoring instead of 2 way (another reason for the need of colour in smaller systems), think for actives the O300 K&H would be my choice. did not have a listen to the new Opal by Event, could be a solution too. if you´re going 2way, think about investing in good ones with enough freq. range to work on masterings, even if the low end is pretty high. solution for the lows could be a good sub, like the idea of bob katz´s stereo bass installation with two subs, anyways, often a 3way system is cheaper at the end than a good 2way system with good subs....

@mandari : Why i think a studio monitor would have a a close to transparent sound is because in powered monitors the amplifiers are onboard specifically designed for the drivers in those speakers giving the designer more freedom in matching both ideally. Yes i would have to agree near neutral sound , neutral sound is rarely found even in the most expensive speakers.
If he buys passive loudspeakers and buys an amplifier to drive them then he has to worry about sonically matching the right amplifiers as some can sound bright whereas other can sound more laid back or warm.

80% of everything solo I have made were on headphones, but I did own some mackie 824s and have used a lot of different speakers. I got sold on Adam monitors after using them in several different studios with different acoustic setups and I will own a pair of them. I like em a lot, and once I have the space to set up /build my studio again, those will be my speakers. They rock for my ears.

Mackie MR8.
I have a pair, and my friend has a pair.
For under $500 a pair, they're thoroughly adequate, and they translate pretty well to larger systems.
this was produced on them:

both good deals ,but they have only right speakers for p33 it seems.

Active monitors being more transparent? WTF? Most of the active monitors mentioned in this thread employ class D amps. Good value, but not the most transparent. Stick a Bryston on it and STFU.

so what you say is to spend many thousands of euros ( 2500$ starting bryston amp ) for a bedroom producer to gain a 20% more clarity?
a pair of 1000e monitors is more than ok for the majority of mixing circumstances.
so keep your bryston amp and STFU.

I don't have a Bryston. I said Active was usually better value. I just said that it was in correct to claim that active monitors are more transparent. English not your first language?

active monitors are more transparent than any passive system in the same price range...
yes class d amps and all but all in all alot more ballanced amps for the speaker they are made for.
brands like adam, dynaudio etc. know how to make a good and balanced speaker without the need of spending 10ths of thousands.
