I mean too rigid relative to its weight..I'm not an idiot. I work at a B&W dealer, and I've been designing speakers for around 4 years, making enclosures for premade drivers and dabbling in transducer design. I'm no physicist, I'm just saying that to my ears, Kevlar cone woofers are hard to work with at best. I don't know why this offends you.

I am not offended, more disappointed. Too rigid? really? OK!
Its just odd that so many, and a lot of the good ones, mastering engineers are OK with them.
What anechoic chamber do you test your designs in? |

I already said I had it backwards..wasn't paying attention. I haven't said once that every single speaker with a kevlar woofer will sound terrible, only that I'm hesitant to use them. Sorry if my first reply seemed condescending or something..I was just stating some common criticisms of kevlar (which definitely have some truth to them according to my listening experience).
All the mastering engineers in the world could use B&W's..that isn't going to change my subjective opinion about them. I don't understand why you're still questioning my experience rather than my ears. It won't change the fact that I've heard almost all current B&W speakers and none of them would be my first choice (relative to the price) specifically for electronic music.
I don't have access to an anechoic chamber..and there's not really any reason I would want to pay for access to one at this point. I do my best with quasi anechoic rigs and actually listening to the result. I'm not selling anything.

please, this disscusion on Monitors is useless.
my pal mix on Tannoy revel for almost 10 years (he can afford anything else he wants) and getting some of the best mixes i ever heard. i cannot work on these Tannoy's, NS10's or Focal will be great for me, (for referance).. now go tell him that Tannoy are cheap and they sound bad.. well, they DO. but he knows them very well AND THATS ALL YOU NEED TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING MONITORS.
the result of your mixes and ease of work will tell you if you made the right choice, no forum in the world.
so,
monitors are VERY personal. one best fit wont do any good for other.
i absolutly hate Adam S3a -why? i cant get a decent mix out of them. a very high tag monitor which is standard worldwide worth crap in my studio..
.. you got the idea .. |

I don't think anyone here has said that "these are best for every person, every kind of music, and every room". For most of us it's important to have revealing and trustworthy monitoring that we also love to listen to. I could mix on cheap Tannoy's if I knew them well enough, sure. I would probably just hate to listen to them, which is discouraging to me when I'm trying to make music.

After exaustive store testing, searching, reading and fighting the fact that not much is available locally to me, I finally bought a pair of mackies MR8 - their cheap monitors.
Took them for a ride @ a friends studio. He owns a pair of mackie HR284 MkII. In comparison, they sounded close. My friend said he liked the bottom end better on the MR8, less coloration there.
The 5 inch version sounded too boomy for my taste, but someone said you can fix that by shoving a pair of socks on the bass port ;P.
If you are currently shopping for budget monitors, give the MR a listen. To me nothing sounded better in this price range on my subjective tests. |

Fwiw, this can theoretically turn a port into an aperiodic vent if done correctly, if you want to do some reading on the subject. If you want to get really serious with it you could fill it with some fiberglass or mineral wool insulation (even better if you can take some out of a bass trap) and stuff it in there, adjusting the amount and listening. A dense clump of polyfill might also work well if you can find somewhere to buy it.

Hey Kane, Thanks for the tips. I bought the 8 inch version, bass is fine. But I guess your advice here could be really usefull as future reference for people buying the 5 inch MR's.
anyway, this is where I found all this crazy socks talk:

at the end.

Yes, although I don't recommend trying to design anything active. The plate amps out there that will work well for this are pretty cheap and noisy. And for me, it hasn't necessarily been cheaper, but you get A LOT more for your money if you know what you're doing..
Haven't really heard anyone talk seriously about DIY here unless it's something relatively easy and mechanical like bass traps or whatever. I'd be happy to share my knowledge if anyone is considering.
