Its not defensive. Its sarcasm....however its sarcasm that didn't involve calling you any names?
I thought you were over that. |

Well I guess we have some communication problems then.
Let's stick to no sarcasm.

I would not use mopads on your stands, untill you can find a problem.
The modpads can correct a probelm that exist, or even create a problem, when it didn't exist in the first place.

The top plates on my stands are definitely smaller than 9"x9"..I think about 6"x6", and I'm using them with 9"x13" speakers. It shouldn't be a problem as long as they're centered and you keep them kind of isolated (no cats that would want to jump up there, no people brushing by them, etc.).

I can't agree with that...sorry
I have tried with and without. With, no contest.
I certainly don't consider the Mopads as correcting a problem. I look at them as essential, along with a stand, for good monitoring.
I am willing to listen to your views though. May I ask how you think they would create a problem? |

You can fill the stand with sand or even lead shot.
I have the 36" version as seen in the link. I rate them over the Quiklock ones. The cable channel is separate, so can still sand fill.
I have Mackie 824's on mine. Reasonably stable...but like Kane says don't let them get knocked.
They aren't as heavy as I expected. I have owened Atacame stands that were much more solid and allowed for more sand filling. But they don't go higer enough for studio monitors.
For the price I think the Ultimate's are best choice.
There are much better ones but they are over twice the price. |

Hey guys, I still haven't got into buying monitors, yet I got a good chance now. I can't spend more than CAD $450 a pair, and there is a chance to get Mackie HR824 MK1 used in great shape just under CAD $500. Do you think it is worth it? Otherwise I would be looking at smaller/cheaper stuff

I personally rate the Mackie HR824's over the Adam A7's and Dynaudio BM6a's.
That's a good price...go for it

Yep..the MK1's are great..maybe a little muddy, but worth the price.

I got rid of the mud. It was my room. They need to be away from walls (they are a nearfield monitor after all). If the room isn't up to it then they will get a bit boomy and muddy. Some bass traps and broadband absorbers on the first reflection points will fix this.
Also the glues are on paper. The 824's have a very flat response and a fast decay time down to well below 100hz. Well beyond the "mud zone".
