OK, so I got that rubber ring off and it looks like Ill be able to take out the woofer. I guess I should just be looking for loose parts?
Took a look inside...nothing obviously loose although it seems most of the internal components are covered by a thick layer of insulation-like material. Is it safe to test the driver while it's out of the enclosure, sitting on my table? |

What do you mean? Connect the amp directly to the woofer alone and test it? If so, then yes it's safe, just don't turn the amp channel up more than about 3/4 of the way and don't touch any exposed wires. If you don't hear it then, it's a problem with the enclosure or something inside of it.
Did you make sure that the crossover board is mounted properly? Is there any loose bracing?
Don't take the polyfill out either, it's there to improve bass response.
And this is only happening with the one speaker?

I meant hooking up the speaker with the woofer sitting outside of the enclosure and trying it that way to see if there's a buzz. When I did that, there was no buzzing and I thought the woofer sounded kind of odd, kind of rumbly, but then again, I don't know what a woofer outside of an enclosure is supposed to sound like so it was probably just the thing vibrating against whatever it was sitting on. But the buzz was gone!
The crossover board looks like its mounted securely.
I think I may have fixed it though.
There wasn't anything inside obviously loose. I noticed that someone had obviously tried to get in here before, and as a result the bottom left screwhole was pretty stripped. I turned the driver a little bit and made new screwholes to get the driver in tight. The loud annoying buzz was gone but it still clicked a bit when I would play that kick sample back, however it was very quiet and only at a fairly loud volume; the other speaker seemed to produce a similar faint click at a slightly louder volume. I didn't have the volume on my sound card maxed out and the clip lights weren't coming on so I'm going to chalk that up to the sample I was using.
The only thing I cam concerned about is when I redid the sine sweep after all of the above, I switched between left and right on the balance to compare, and it seemed like the right monitor didn't sound as clean or smooth as the left. However I've been listening to the same damn sine sweep for 5 hours so I think my ears are tired and I'm being a bit picky, and it's late so I can't do as well a test as I'd like. Is it normal for it to sound a little different from left to right?
But for now the buzz seems to be gone; I'm crossing my fingers that that was the only problem and that it'll still work tomorrow.

It's normal for a woofer outside of an enclosure to sound like that. Even if it isn't vibrating against a surface, usually the air pressure inside the enclosure helps to control the woofer's movement, tightening bass response.
Are you sure that the click isn't just coming from the kick sample? Dry samples without any eq or compression can sound overly "blippy".
Two well designed and well built speakers should be identical, and should not sound noticeably different from left to right, but if you aren't directly between them and they aren't set up completely symmetrically and mirroring each other, they will sound different at that listening position. Non-symmetric room designs can also cause some subtle differences.

Could be the sample I suppose; I'll have to check that out.
But the loud buzzing is definitely gone. I still think the right speaker sounds a bit less clean during the sine sweep but the acoustics in my room are quite terrible and listening to music, everything sounds fine whereas before it was pretty unlistenable due to the buzz/clicking.
I'll take it as a lesson in "you get what you pay for" and to never buy something like monitors used. At least they weren't Adams or something, hehe.
Thanks for your help Kane |

How much did you pay for them? The mk2's are only $200..
Maybe you could return the amp and save a bit for a new entry level active set?

150$ Canadian.
They're about 300$ Canadian here at all the local places I checked. Ordering from the US isn't worth it with the currency conversion, shipping and customs fees. This is for the actives.
I've been listening to them all day and they sound great now; I'm gonna wait until I save up for a better pair of monitors instead of spending more money on something that's not much better.
I got the amp on e-bay also so it would be a pain to return it with customs and shipping fees.
I'm happy with this for now, now that the buzz is fixed. |

So it's alright if you get all defensive when I ask a simple question out of curiosity?
