I think Yamaha MSP5 sounds promising

What do you think?

Yamaha MSP5 or Yamaha HS50M?

Hi all,

This is my first post here!

I'm currently looking to get a new pair of monitors for my room. It's medium sized but bear in mind that I'll be taking these with me to university (which will be a smaller room).

I'm looking at these two at the moment:

M-Audio Studiophile BX5A Deluxe
http://www.dolphinmusic.co.uk/shop/flypage/product_id/37857

Samson Rubicon R5a
http://www.dolphinmusic.co.uk/shop/flypage/product_id/5670

The Rubicon ones are more expensive but feature ribbon technology - is this really worth the extra cost? is it what it's hyped up to be?

I'm happy to consider any other monitors that you would recommend, but I don't want to spend much more than the rubicon's (£200 ish).

Thanks for your help in advance!
Carl

I am very happy with my Behringer Truth B2031A speakers and you can get a pair for around US$350...
Nice and linear soundquality...           Upavas - Here And Now (Sangoma Rec.) new EP out Oct.29th, get it here:

Mackie's new MR5's might be worth looking at - I just got the bigger MR8's and am really liking them so far. Sound on Sound had a nice writeup about them last month

I got them as well for quite a time..and they sounded very distorted to me in my room actualy..did not have the chance to test them..but in combination with the arc system it was a difference like between day and night..they started to sound like a nice soundsystem

got A7 now..and i think i do not really need the arc anymore..but will give it a shot next days anyway and see if i can make it even better with em..           -------......-------...-..-..-..-.-.-.-.-

Yep, you do have to proof them in your room, once you have set them up the right way they are indeed quite linear.

OK, thanks for the replys guys. I've been looking into the Behringer Truth B2031A monitors and they do look really nice indeed - lots of good reviews out there. They are a little bit out of my price range though.

I'm strongly considering buying them, but is there anything else a little cheaper (like those I linked to above) people could recommend? Also, is this 'ribbon' technology worthwhile looking into too?

Many thanks.

its basicly a good thing..and i do not want to miss it anymore actualy...it really helps me a lot of getting a non distorted signal out of my monitors..maybe its worth while to wait for the KRK sytem..but the arc system helpt me really to enjoy my speakers and it does it`s job.....maybe its not compareable with expensive acoustic treatment..but i`m rally satisfied..and btw.. you can install it on 5 systems..wich are suggested to be your own ones..but..
so it`s really affordable if you ask me..and it changes a lot and points out the problematic fq in your room..btw..so you know how to develop your acoustics...

i use it now in combination with some basotec panels wich you can get for a very low price indeed

http://shop.strato.de/epages/61456034.sf/de_DE/?ObjectPath=/Shops/61456034/Products/eck1100420420

and it works for me..i checked several things on other systems and its still working good..so thats the way to go..if you ask me..

greez..

you could send me a track of yours and i could make a rough mix on it...for you so that you can compare something like..you know..just contact me on pm..

What're people's thoughts on buying new vs used monitors? I'm just concerned about loss of sound/overall quality. Obviously each would be different depending on how the previous owner used them, but is it better to buy new over used?           http://soundcloud.com/ascensionsound

as you already mentioned, it depends on how the previous owner treated them, but you should also keep in mind that new monitors need some time to sound really good. i think around 100 hours usage should be enough though. generally good monitors will last some time if treated well, so buying them used is a good alternative i think...

That's good to hear. I have to battle my cheap side with the side that wants good equipment           http://soundcloud.com/ascensionsound
