I would suggest a Focusrite Saffire LE or an Edirol UA25/UA25EX if firewire isn't an option.
  You believe in the users?
Yeah, sure. If I don't have a user, then who wrote me? |

I use the Focusrite Saffire in my studio. Gonna get another one for the Macbook for the live gigs, good quality DACs, portable and the two headphone jacks are very useful since there's two of us.

I would suggest you the Echo Audiofire 4 or presonus firebox..way better than M-Audio and Edirol stuff..
Focusrite is imo even not a good choice , we got 3 or 4 broken ones in our store last year..they all fired up..with actualy smoke out of the interface..
next step in quality and workflow(routing options) after the echo is the fireface 400 by RME with kick ass solid drivers/converters and routing matrix etc..
if you're in the beginning then i wouldn`t suggest you to buy an interface wich is cheap but got lots of channels..in the end you maybe won`t buy external gear for fx proccesing..
and then you got this big interface with less quality..
but if you just wanna get started with good sound, even an audiofire 2 would fit..
they got a very good internal clock and use the same converters as apogee in the high end leage..
the presonus is interesting because of its surround capabilities..and even very good sound..
just my2cents

Haven't checked the whole thread but I got a specific request so...
I need a new soundcard with the folowing features:
- max 700€
- at least 2 ins
- at least 8 outs
- zero latency on input that is being processed when the computer is at high cpu performance (playing live, tweaking incoming guitar)
- pci (have had two firewire soundcards, both did not work on several pc's, don't trust that shit anymore)
Which would you advice?
I now have the terratec phase28, which is quite good for its price but it fails miserably on the zero latency input thing.
thanks

8 outs makes sense to use with a hardware mixer for studio or live, if desired.

thanks for the advice, i checked the audiofire 4, looks nice at a reasonable price, as i said to you i will just use a midi controller (axiom25) for the beggining, so what i m more interested is audioquality. I think i will go with it when i get my new lap.

For good sound quality:
MOTU 828 MKII USB
MOTU 8Pre Firewire Audio Interface
RME Fireface 400 36-Channel 24 Bit/192 kHz FireWire Audio Interface

I've considered getting a MOTU several times, but I'm always worried after seeing so many threads about driver problems and disappointed users.
Do you have one? (d2)

No, quite a few friends have had them over the years. But I am a Protools so I have to make do with Digidesign hardware.
I have yet to meet someone to complain about Motu products. |

I've had problems with Motu,i would say for good sound quality get the RME fireface 800.
Motu has the shittiest drivers, and that is not only my statement.
If Motu cleaned up their drivers they might be as good as RME |
