I'd imagine it was mostly in the quality of the original mixes.

yes! for sure! you get there by doing everything right from the first moment!

high tech requires a very good knownledge of almost everything audio, including your daw.

but isn't all that different from slower stuff... bounce your stuff to audio and process it to do exactly what you want.
