what do you use to add punch? i like the way the multi band compressor can add definition to the bass end and punchy power - are there other ways of achieving this?
btw - what it your typical signal path?
thanks

punch should be in you mix, mastering only enhances it.
Everyone does everything a different way.
Typical cpu master chain: EQ - Compression - Limiter
or
EQ - Compression - more EQ - Limiter
or
stereo field expansion - Compression - EQ - Tape - EQ - Compression - Limiter
the list goes on and on and on and on.

sure - defo need to get the mix as good as possible
i understand now, you are using single band compression rather than multiband.
i've been messing with this signal path...
eq - compression - inflator - eq - limiter
i've found the Waves LinMB quite harsh - that's why i've been wondering about alternatives - it does add punch though
exciters and stereo expansion stuff never really work in a good way for me - i haven't used them much and probably haven't figured them too well as a result
which compressor do you use for mastering? (and why...)
thanks, this is very helpful

For compressors, here are my favorites at the moment and why I like them...
PSP2 Warmer - adds that tape warmth.
Sonalksis - The DQ1 Dynamic Equaliser - I have had nothing work better for controlling those crazy frequencies.
Sonnox SuprEsser - is also a great tool for getting in there and pin pointing those 'in your ear' tones.
Sonalksis CQ1 Multi-Band Compander - If I have to use a multi-band its this one. Just a little control goes along way.
Sonalksis cSV-315 Mk2 Compressor - is bad ass and is always in the chain, its not analog but its damn close.
Sonnox Inflator - well you know how good that is.

yes the inflator is great as is the sonalksis compressor - i use that alot on channels but i've not tried it on the whole mix. the DQ1 & CQ1 are still a bit of a mystery to me - need to fiddle with them a bit more. I've not tried the SuprEsser or warmer2.
thanks

Hello everybody,
This is my first post in this forum. I wrote a mixing/mastering toturial (only with software). It would be nice to get some feedback. I'm always searching to improve.
Thanks already.

I'm looking to get some tracks mastered soon, although as everyone I'm sure I have very little money & am looking for someone who does it cheap. I found these guys who do as cheap as £12 per track, but for so cheap do you think it will be a good service? i don't mind if the mastering isn't brilliant, just as long as it makes my track a little better. What do you guys think?

didn't have a look. but i would say forget it, make music and use izotope. u will know exctly when a track is 'really' ready for mastering and then give it to someone for mastering who 'really' understands your music. some high-end gear alone won't do. just my opinion... |

there's a fuckin' huge gap between profesionally made music and shit with some hardware comps on it...
yep, after some years of mixing and room acoustics i would recommend a GOOD mastering service.
for £12 you can maybe except a standard-everytrackexactlysame-fullon processing or whatever... |
