pixan:
- Inflator: Add harmonics to the sound material increasing the apparent loudness without raising too much the volume.
If you use it a litle is a good plug, if you use too much will distort the sound.
- L2 is a limiter, a limiter is like a compressor with an infinite ratio, when the sound amplitude passes from the threshould you set the limiter will compress the sound with a infinite ratio, for a matter of opinion i hate L2...
I sugest to use Inflator just before the limiter and after any other processigs.

thanx williandiesel
, i will try a combination of these 2 as to not overdo any process when premastering for live use. Im also thinking try other limiters like PSP MPL for a change.

If anyone is willing it would be interesting to hear before and after mastering versions of a track (Or a small section of a track).

I'm no pro, but I think you can get the idea...oh and btw, please excuse the damn quality everything of this was done on headphones yet since I got not much time to produce in my studio lately...

I forgot to add, for those that are interested:
the chain persists of eq -> multiband compander -> eq -> tape saturation -> m/s eq -> adaptive limiter

Hey guys, need some help.
After I've done the mix down in a balanced way instrumentally, and -2db peak @ 32bit.
I split the files into 4 bands and put slight compression on them, and then limit to get it loud. but as much as I try, i don't get that Pro loudness, I want.
I think I am as much as 3db behind those good tracks.
Another question about band compression on mix down file. Is it just to glue things together or to crank up the volume as well? How is it done correctly?
Thanks

Hey Colin,
Why do you put a stereo compressor before limiters after you have already done multiband compressing?
2nd question: why do you use 2 limiters at the end of the chain?
thanks

hi guys, after creating a few track with cubase SX i noticed how important mastering is.
i got a few questions:
do you master the whole finished track with only 1 EQ?
i use the Kjärhus GEQ7 for each single line (lead, bass, kick, hihats...) is that wrong?
i got here an example and hope you can help me:
http://files.filefront.com/masteringmp3/;10090103;/fileinfo.html
somehow the whole thing sounds to creamy ^^ if you understand. |

hey there, i´ve checked out now the mastering vid earlier in this thread from Andi.
i got some questions, please tell me if im wrong!
Kick, Bass ... 0HZ-120HZ
Leads, Pads ... 120HZ-8KHZ
Percussion .... 8KHZ-22KHZ
but... i have to cut off my leads from 10KHZ, not from 8KHZ because otherwise it sounds bad... am i doing wrong?
i also need the amount of [db] for each instrument... how shold i know that? i have got good ears about harmonics, but mastering is really hard to hear.
the idea about mastering is to cut off frequency of each instrument in the right position, that they are not disturbing each other, right?
its really hard to understand everything, additional my poor english makes it not easier.
if you dont want to tell me, you maybe have some links what get me closer to my questions.

I find that using a few different compressors lets me work with various different aspects of a track's dynamics; in fact I think this is one of the secrets to good mastering - compress more than once with different units, with each set to compress less than you'd use if you were only using one of them. For instance, sometimes I use L2 as the first plugin in the chain to cope with the wilder peaks many inexperienced producers leave in their mixes, before compressing again further down the chain. Note also that I didn't master most of the tunes in that clip, and that multiple compressors were used by both Duncan and myself when mastering the album. The L2 on Duncan's mastering was never driven harder than -1dB on the input fader.
In answer to your second question (assuming you were talking about the Oh My track), the Steinberg plugin is more than a straight limiter (although I don't know exactly what it does) and I was using just a little of it to raise the level whilst it did its compressing thing - I liked how it sounded for that purpose, although I now use the Oxford Inflator in its place.

Hey Colin,
Do you use the Bass Expand function of the Compounder in mastering? (With the HUGE button engaged?)
