neat little thing i learned from bandarlog:
layering (ok, classic trick...) really works... I layered a good sounding kick with too little oomph on itself, put a LP filter on one and a HP filter on the other so they don't clash, and the play with the volumes of both untill u have the right amount of click/sub. Works like a charm, but u need a quite good kick to start with (although i think that u can do it with the 909 kick and it will be fine) |

Waldorf Attack VSTI can make some really phat kicks and i am very fond of that, also jeskola buzz has a whole range of dedicated kick drum synths which are incredibly flexable (buzz is free software). I like to put mine through some cab distortion too just to give it a more real analog sound. I always find synthesizing a kick drum will have much better results as you can adjust the decay to suit the tempo and the pitch of the kick to suit the key accordingly. I know some producers that have a habit of using the same sampled kick in every track because they know that it will work ok at high volumes through a rig, if you dont quite understand what your doing when making a kick drum it can go terribly wrong in the low end, which is why i think some producers get a little scared about making their own (quite rightly too), but i always get frustrated with the same old kick and often find its not quite right for the track imo. Kick synthesis is the way forward! I am constantly monitoring my kicks frequency response with a graphical equalizer to make sure the frequencies are evenly distributed and stopping in the correct place etc. |

question:
the turning point is the interaction between kick and bass, but where do you place them on the wave spectrum?
i mean, is it better, to seperate them, or boost them at the same frequenzies, and if you seperate them, where do you place which?

Have you ever succeed in doing a useful kick in this way? Hmm.. This must be worth testing |

[Tuning Kick Drums 101]
Requirements: Synth with self oscillating filter, creativity, a good ear and patience!
1. Turn all oscillaters down (off)
2. Turn the resonace to full (max)
3. Cutoff around 10%
4. Envelope amount 50%
4. Filter Envelope decay 10-20%
5. Filter Envelope sustain 0-10%
6. Volume Envelope attack 0-10% ( the more you turn up the attack the more rounded the kick will be)
7. Volume Envelope Decay 10-20%
Every synth will be slightly different but this will get you very close. Just experiment with it and have some fun. |

Haven't seen anyone mention battery here yet... dunno bout everyone else, but for me I could'nt do any percussion with out it. Just the pitch envelope generators were enough to get me hooked. You can put anything in there and tweak it a bit to get a descent kick sound. Then if you want to get adventurous, its sample accurate so you can layer 100 different kick sounds on top of one another if you wish... |

nothing that u told just now convinced me that u really have to use battery to do that.... My akai can do that too... i think just about every sampler can do that, the envelopes just need to be fast enough... U can even do it in fuityloops, cuz fruity has a pitch envelope on every sampler channel that u have... And i use the fruity pitch envelope in fact... And it gave me great results... The technical explanation is very correct, i'm just not convinced that u have to have this or that program to do it... |

In fruity loops u can also use the samplers 'POGO' knob to tweak ur average kick to and killer kick
