I practiced making some kicks today to build up my collection and I want to share them here as well, so here you go. 30 psy kicks in 96000 Hz, normalized and just slightly enveloped at the tail to get rid of the click.

Let me know if you like them.

Thanks! had a quick listen they sound nice and punchy!:) cheers bro

could you answer a couple of things plz?
why 96000 instead of 44100? is this set in your DAW or vst?

normalizing would bring the highest peak up to a set level, but doesn't change the ratio between peaks so why not just increase volume of kick?

I used 96000 because I normally work at that sample rate in the DAW, so to avoid converting each individual kick when importing.

About the normalizing - it just increased the amplitude so that the sample peaks at -0.1 db. I didn't use compression or any other processing.

big mistake. 96kHz is a format for movie industry. 88,2 is for normal music. for me it have no sense for use that sample rate for kick. kick is going to 16khz max so higher sample rate have no sense. bit depth is different thing but 16bit is still enough for kick. really.
fu*k, this is just a sine wave, people. higher sample rate than 44,1 cant make your kick sounds better and there is a problems with conversion to 44,1. in 88,2 is split /2 and its easy for calculate.
i dont know why people use high sample rates to making electronic music. its typical for newbies, when they think that it makes theyre track better. its not truth. triumph of form over content.          http://www.beatport.com/release/cross-the-atoms/1042450

OK, to clear a few things up - I know that in the case of a kick 96 vs 44.1 does nothing, I didn't say it does. I said I worked at 96000 Hz because from my experience it makes certain synths/plugins, like DCAM Synth Squad's Cypher sound better than at 44100, same as when you turn the oversampling in the synth to 8x. I realize 88.2 is more mathematically "perfect" but my soundcard does not play well at that sample rate in Windows XP.

That is why I made the kicks at 96K, I didn't know it would be such a big deal. The next pack that I upload will be in 44.1, so I hope then everyone will be happy.

I think the new versions of Audition don't have the pitch bender tool (yet), so you effectively can't make kicks with them... as far as I know. Maybe I'm wrong. CS3 can do it.

Hey

after some weeks of trying to do some kick sound like U.recken and Sonic species im running out of ideas how to get there.

i used bazzism. with different settings, i also try to use layerd kicks or create my own with sylenth, but never come close to these one.

When i use bazzism i missing some anlog feeling in the kick and the kicks are to flat when it comes close to that sound or it is too hard bouncing. Maybe its some of my compr. EQ settings but i also played around a lot with these. I also tryed to use bazzism for that digital feeling and some wav samples for that analog sound

any suggestion are welcome

I went back to using two oscillators for making a trance kick...man that process is deep...not straight forward playing with one pitch envelope sweeping a sine wave, how the two sine oscillators phase together at the "boom" with the different settings on each pitch envelope and the relative modulation indexes and levels, opens up a whole new territory of kicks, although care must be taken to avoid having two thumps in the low end.

It took me literally one hour to make a kick drum I was happy with last night, but I enjoyed every minute of it.

Will post sample up as soon as I finish the track I start yesterday.

@Synergic: If you want to get a little more of an analogue feel, try applying a bit of saturation, or distortion, and check how it sounds. Also, perhaps if you try playing the kick through a nice speaker (like a guitar cabinet) and placing a mic to capture the sound, you can achieve a sound that is more vivid and analogue? I have never tried this last tip, but it's worth a shot

Hmm.. two individual pitched sine oscillators, that end in the same note / frequency, but can start at different points and have different envelope curves but with the same duration.. this can become interesting, but I imagine the advantages when the settings are similar, because it they are too different than this is quite the same of playing two kick's at once, right?

I don't see anything special in those kicks. A lot of the "character" of different kicks comes from the EQing (or the way the pitch bend).

Look a few posts down there is a tutorial by WiseNEvil who show how to do a kick in monologue (and any other synth with mod env). Now when you make a kick like that it is gonna be very boxy and raw and need a lot of EQ. It is like making a stone sculpture, you cut away the parts you don't need.

If you have a synth with flexible pitch envelope you can get away with less EQ because the kick can have a better pitch bend and sound less boxy.

Also, if I hear right, these kicks have a closed hi-hat layered on top of them which adds to the presence in a mix, makes them a bit more "airy", so don't forget to add that as well.
