						| Hi,
I've been reading this forum for a few months and decided to register and throw my 2 pence in.

I've spent literally years trying to get a kick drum sound that I'm happy with because it is obviously a staple of any electronic dance music. Hopefully I can add some info here. I could get good 909 kick samples that sounded great on there own but they wouldn't cut it in the mix too well. Finally, in desperation, I bought a TR909 (at great exepense) and even after EQ it doesn't quite have the impact I expected, although maybe because it is true analogue the kick does seem to cut through mixes better than a single kick sample. I've concluded that it is not just the sound on it's own, although that is important, it is also equally important the way the other sounds in your mix fit around it, e.g. note position and length on HH/ Bass, the groove in other words! The most common problem is that kick dissappears into the mix. The kick takes up much more of the available audio frequencies than you would expect, it needs room for a short time. To give it the upfront power you need in dance music you need to use a good quality compressor on at least the drums and bass parts. I don't mean a cheap limiting amp, that will compound the problem, I mean a good quality valve or optical compressor that produces musical results. I have tried this approach and it does work. I don't believe a plugin has been produced yet that can give as good a result. I recommend saving cash on all the software that makes many claims but doesn't deliver the goods and getting one of these dinosaur compressors on your kick/ mix. You wouldn't regret it:-)
