Hi Crew
My question is:
I have created a nice Bassline that I am very happy with. When I eq it with a low cut at around 28-30hz it just falls apart and turns to mud. If I use a linear phase eq it keeps it nice and clean and very transparent. So I am wondering why a normal parametric eq does this plus it also increases the headroom of the sound. And also is it just a case of eqing out the mud to get my clean sound back ? I hope this makes sense.
Cheers

If it makes it worst then don't use it. Trust YOUR ears. |

Hi Again
I am useing a 48db HP cut so all the sub frequencys are comeing from my kick not the bass. I think I need to cut more like 40hz off this bass it's kinda fat, I am useing samples from a sh-101 in Kontakt with the Pro 53 synth filter. |

I am just wondering how low can you go with a bassline before it's total crud to workwith in terms of key on your midi roll out ie C2 or down to D1 ? |

check my pitching thread .
Then again don't ,because it wuz a stupid question.
Try it see for yourself, but the fundimentle part of the bass will obvously dissapear -if of corse u have hipassed at 38hz., only harmonics will remain
which leads to the next question how importaint is the fundimentle. |

a stupid question , what are you usually doing with the first eq band on your bassline? i m asking that cause with experience i almsot always try the same things... i m curious to hear what work for you most of the time.
me for example i always check around 500 hz first |

check around 500hz for what? Gold? 350hz grahpic always do it for me .
I also fuking love eqing kicks and compressing then sum more eq to give sum real beef -offtopic
then use some loverly sidechain if needed, I find that I then can really push the filters.

In that example I dint have an hp set up.. Just 30hz decreased on URS N12. I Like writing in e or b, this was just an experiment that I wuz unsure of.. if in b hp @50hz, if in e hp @35-40 , I use waves r eq's the only eq I have that can achieve a steep curve. Sonnox is the same ish.
My fuking laptop is dying on me! No more bassline practice for for me!!!!! Graphics card has had it!
I'm typin this shit on my iPhone , good job I got beatmaker on it with noise.io |

maybe i should have asked if you have only one band of eq how you would use it on your bassline, i eq around 500 with a very large Q to remove few resonance with one band ,most of the synths i dont like how they sound their ,and it can make room for snare and other drums.
i find it intresting, what do you do at 350 hz? never had problems there |

Totally agree!
I would do the same...
I recently noticed this with Iblit, a very nice synth for bass but needs that cut in around 500hz cause its so phat...
But then again we dont have to limit our self's to one band.. so i would give a mild cutting slope from 50hz maybe depending on sound, and some mild slope in the highs i mostly do my EQ by ears and not numbers though...
Then again some basses needs a boost in the 150-300hz area to get some beef..

yes agree ,i find it intresing cause we all tweak differently, really mean there is not only one way to archieve good sound, everyone as it own technics and it always amaze me when working with other artists.
lots remove around 200 to let room for the kick but dunno ,it never worked for me |

Yeah very true!
Its very interesting..
I got one story,
A old friend was over to my place, this was in 2003 or something like that and i was working on a tune, but it sounded weak, i used VB1 for bass..some kick from Psykick(ola) then he boosted the EQ in the lows way up and i said you cant do that..
And really you cant do that it will just sound shit. But like you say everybody does things differently, so i understod he really didnt have much clue on some principles, i mean it was most probably my shitty speakers back then, some hifi shit...
It just shows how important good monitoring is and some basic principles of sound, i mean common, does anyone here boost the shit out of the lows just cause it sounds a little weak, its all about perception, better to mix the other things weak and give a impression that the weak bass is strong... better yet find a new bass.. but you get my point

yes i know what you mean, some do crazy stuff with eq... like using 10 bands for a kick lol, but if it sound good, what ever work.
about the monitoring it s very true yes, i think room acoustic and knowing you monitor is the biggest factor for good production a lot more than what gears/plugins are used ,i realised it after moving in a shit room |
