I'm looking for some tips on how to make Suomisaundi or Free form style bass lines. I know there are many different sounds, I'm not looking for one sound in paticular, after all it is a "free form". If someone who produces this stlye of music can throw me a few pointers that would be great! |

I forgot to mention. I use Albino or Trilogy in Live 7 Suite, Mac OS X. |

for my psy bass i use a single saw osc from junglist or vangraud. you can get a good saw sound out of allmost any synth these days
low pass filter, high cut off, little or no res
amp - short attack (no clicks), short decay (very important this is what makes it snappy), tweek the sustain to taste, short release. the amp is probably the most important part of creating the psy bass im my book
add an EQ, high pass around 60-80 to cut out low rumble, notch midrange mud, low pass mid to high freq.
i make my kik and bass pattern like this
K-b-b-b ,
some people do a higher velocity on the middle bass note to accent the the off beat but still have the rolling sound like
K-b-B-b
some people compress to a side chain so the bass turns off when the kick hits. but i dont, just as long as my attack it set well.
i also heard of people distorting it lightly to get it more fuzzy and punchy, but i dont. |

Maybe it's a stupid request, but could one of you guys upload a small live set with a basic kick & bass well equalised & compressed (for Live! if possible).
The thing is, I've never really produced something like that sounding good, so I feel like such a thing would give me some kind of reference (not to mention the fact that I can remove all the EQ & compression and try to make it good again on my own)...

I've been trying to tweak VB-1 since a really long time and still struggling to get better and clean sound. Here's a short clip of a track I've been working on http://www.sendspace.com/file/06r9w1
Can someone tell me what's missing?

ok work with peak controller. trying to get my basslines to pump way harder.
well here we go
FL7
im using a single saw wav in junglist
pattern set up for psytrance kik-bass-bass-bass
the bass being 32 notes
amp - no attack, short decay, medium sustain, no release
filter - medium to high cutoff, no res, no attack, short decay, medium sustain, no release
fx chain -
1)fl parametic EQ2 - high pass at 55HZ, notch at 650HZ, rest is open
2) fl compressor - threshold linked to FL peak controller(placed on a cloned Kick) -19db when kick is on 0db when kick oss off, ratio - 2.3:1 gain 15db, attack 20 ms, release 200 ms, type "knee" hard
im getting a little clipping when i active the peak controller, not much but still a little...wtf is that. could it be faulty?
are my envelopes or compressor set wrong?

I would recomend you the LennarDigital Sylenth1 Vsti Synth to make some basslines. It even can do some sick leads, arps, pads ... Very deep and fat sound.
Here's my example of a typical fullon bassline.
Used 1 instance of Sylenth1, buildin arpegiator and a midi controler. No chain, eq, no bass boosters, compresors or stuff like that.
Check it out ;]
www.staypsychedelic.pl/mesca/sylenth1psybass.mp3
note: It's only a bassline demo without kick or any written sequence. Don't ask me for presets. It's really easy to knob it. Saw, filter env and some fatness ;] |

no 1 too short the envelope, s more percussive bass. I don't know if you wanted it;)
no2 bass too fluid, lacking body and definition

My favorite these days is Scorpion 4.0 ..
I think you gotta be using the later versions cause the old ones look kinda crappy..
I'll try to remember to post a preset when I get on my computer ..
Honestly, I don't think people should be wasting their time spending days / years trying to make a decent bass when they could be actually writing music. It's certainly taken me way too long to figure it out.
This probably has been posted by now, but check this out ..

Cosmosis bass presets ..
It's pretty much as good as it gets for bass tones made with Albino ..
RBass at 80hz usually does the trick
+ Quadrafuzz
The default preset for Quadrafuzz in Cubase is fine ..
or if it's the VST version (for any other sequencer) just flatten the bands to the 0 line and your good to go.
