i dont think whether instructions how the compressor must be set are good, the values of ratio, treshold etc. depends on signal incoming to processor, and we dont know what levels and characters you send out to compressor

A good rule of thumb is that not more than 3dB sould be compressed (gainreduction).           Peace and Love, seriously!

tjaal - it`s k -bbb -k -bbb

If they don`t sit nicely it`s either your kick or bass sample's eq.
Most likely the bass.
Just alter the attack, decay and sustain and it`ll fit better.

hey thnx guys!

errrr, i have another question
how to make those slides in basslines?

i was reading some stuff in cosmosis site about it, but still have doubts...
taken from there

"... how do I get that sliding bass sound you use in your tracks? "

"Getting slides:
1. Put your synth into monophonic mode (can only play one note at a time)

2. Turn the Portamento (or slide) function on.

3. Enter 2 MIDI notes that slightly overlap into the key editor.

Now when you play the sequence, any notes that are overlapped will trigger only the first note's envelope and will slide to the next note that it is overlapped with.

4. Adjust the portamento time so that the slide goes at the speed you require."

how do i know if my synth/vst is monophonic? or how i set it to be? using like, vanguard, v-station, albino
portamento and slide are the same thing?
in V-Station i tried to do as the example, and it has a portamento, should i set it to maximum?
i know u go tweaking, hearing what sounds better, but some tips on this would be welcome
thnx!

U know if your synth is monophonic if you can't playing chords on it but only separate notes...

On Vanguard, enabling the glide will put the synth in monophonic mode
On Albino, you just have to change the play mode (i guess that's it)

you dont want your portamento at max the portamento knob controls how much time it takes to slide between notes. so most likely you will want it set somwhere between 10 and 50% depending on what you are going for.

ough.. alot of reading here
thou, I still have a question..

I get my basslines exactly the way I want it in nearfield monitors (esi nEar 05 xp). Short, snappy sawtooth-bassline without tone. But when I listen on my bigger monitors (jbl eon G2 15" the basslines gains a somewhat metalic tone.

been fiddling with kick and bass for almost a year and now I'm so close. what is the trick to get it to sound the same? what am I missing?

cheers

hhmm... metallic means a combination of HF, chorus and very small delay. Try to remove them from your bass. Get better monitors......           -------------------------------------------------

usually as short as possible..depends on the tempo i would say..and have a look at the actual lenght of the bassnote..bounce out two octaves of 16tel shortem them a bid..not too much but so that they don`t overlap..fade out if something is crackling..and put em in a sampler like battery..

works got or me..           -------......-------...-..-..-..-.-.-.-.-

Hey there,

i just bought a Virus Ti and i'm becoming quite crazy on programming basslines. i used to program my basslines on vanguard or albino, and it was easy for me to tweak killer bass sounds.
Don't laugh but with the virus i am lost...i tried to do the same way i did with vanguard but...there's a lot more parameters, i know that i could be able to do monster bass sounds with the virus...

any tips ?

yes i almost resolved the problem. In fact you have to set unison to maximum without detune, and properly tweak the filter envelope and that's it ! Killeeeeeeeeeer sound

Congrats with your TI I'd say turn unison off. Use analog boost at the right frequency to give the bass some body. Add a little 'punch' at a low intensity. The rest comes down to fiddling with the amp and filter envelopes as well as the amount of envelope on the filters. Also make sure that the oscs are synced and not free-running.
