I used Alien 303 presets to make my bassline. Somehow it doesn't sound as punchy and fat like a professionally produced bassline. I kept trying but was never satisfied with my kick+bassline. So i downloaded a bass note sample from the net and used it with sampler in Live. It sounds good now.

Why can't I get the same quality using vsts?           "Do not try and bend the spoon. That's impossible. Instead, only try to realize the truth."

I have made the same,my personal best bassline came once from simply a waveform added to simpler.
The bass came from it I still am satisfied, only the track is too melodic and melancholic.
And now in my new experiment I am suprising and fight this issue cause the same method ,waveform to simpler is giving my downers..sounds like shit in headphones.
And the same with alien too, once i have one experiment where the bass is alright and made also once one with alien where I had to trhow it away after too much time waste of trying.
I think each track is different and depends on many things, and one needs a lot of expirience, ups and downs to know more.           https://soundcloud.com/shivagarden

I agree. I believe it depends on the the bass note a lot.
But, sampling a bass note for my bassline still sounds better for me than vst which is not what I want.           "Do not try and bend the spoon. That's impossible. Instead, only try to realize the truth."

does anyone know what astrix uses for his basslines?

2nd.......if my kick is on c5 but my bass is on lets say a#4 and it sounds ok ......it doesnt need to be changed(like kick to a#4)if it sounds good right?

if it sounds good, it is good. trust your ears more than what 'should sound good' as decided by theory            If you want to make an apple pie from scratch...you must first invent the universe

A saw wave?

seriously can't be too much more than that.

and +1 to willsanquil

one question though does the song shift out of tune drastically when moving around the room?

Mabe somebody can give me some advice

I'm recently using only Sylenth for my Basslines, imo it's the best synth for creating your own Bass presets and the synth sounds really fat.

Usually I choose a saw wave. Very short attack, mid decay, short sustain, very short release.

Then I route the lp over an envelope, no attack, short decay, no sustain, no release.

Sonnox Oxford Eq, lowcut by 32hz, small cut arround 800hz, highcut arround 6khz-7khz.

Quadrafuzz, but i'm not tweaking anything there, just for disortion.

Cubase 4 multiband compressor, there i boost the low freq approx. 3db-4db and i decrease the high freq approx. 2db-3db

Thats it So on my speakers (Adam A7) it sounds really good, nice punching bassline, fits well with the kick, everything seems to be great But when i'm listening to it with my headphones (Technics RP-DJ 1210) it sounds just terrible. Kick and Bass fits, nice sub bass, but the mid and high freq sounds like recorded with a fisherprice micro

Donno, my music is getting better and better but the bassline is and was allways a problem for me.

Cheers

Yeah bro, same problem. My bassline vst chain is very similar to yours (although Multiband Compression is a f-in good idea, thx for the input ;-), but with headphones it really sounds weaker. I tweak as long as I'm satisfied with the sounds from the headphones, cause I think they have the most brilliant sound of all my listening tools, and my monitors are not the best in the regions of subbass :-( The only thing with headphones is, that they show the bass weaker in the mix than it is in fact.

i'm not sure anymore that it's matters what is the note of the kick. just very few people can hear it and who cares about them? we make music for theregular people not to few producers with excellent hearing.

Actually I kinda disagree there a bit actually.

Even though most people cant hear the difference, well they hear it, but cant percieve it, the brain still knows its slightly off.

But as well, changing the pitch of the kick will change what it sounds like, so if it sounds good, its good.

I can't hear these questions anymore " how's Astrix, Skazi blablabla doing his basslines". Of course it's good and helpfull to get some inputs from well known artists. But it's many time's like that, that you are tweeking your bassline like Astrix or who ever, using the same fx and you doesen't receive the same result. And why? Because it's the way how THEY are doing it, and the way how it's working for THEM. That doesen't mean it works for you as well Keep trying and trying and trying and you will get a satisfying result.

Do most of you use a single bass channel or two(one for sub bass and one for the high range) ?           "Do not try and bend the spoon. That's impossible. Instead, only try to realize the truth."

In the last month's I've been using two bass chanels. Imo better than a single chanel. I first begin with the sub bass, tweeking that long till it fits well with the kick. Afterwards the rest It's a bit of handycraft, but the result is for me more satisfying.
