was just wondering like does the bass line change the whole feel of the track? for example i have this track which is like 148 bpm with lot of dark atmospheric sounds and EFX and the bass line is like KBBB.what i want to know is if i change the bass line from KBBB to something else okie for example KBKB by keeping all the other sounds constant even the same sample of the kick and bass will it take out the whole dark feel of the track??
thanks

Do you guys have tips on making a classic darkpsy bass ? I just need the basic principles to start in the good direction.

Yeah, that's helpful.
My advice (exceedingly noobish though it is) - is to try a relatively low note on the sequencer, like E or D, something around there.
It stays on the same note, and there are 3x 16th length or smaller notes in the sequence inbetween the 4/4 kick (as for kick, the Tsabeat pack is really great, or try speakafreakas new layered kick synth, or bazzism)
Quickest way to get close IMO is to use Alien303 VST, "dark psytrance" or "Fat" preset, tweak it to your liking
As for note velocity, try first note ~40, second note higher ~80-100, third note little bit lower or higher than the first note.
IDK if you have yet, but read through this thread in its entirety for good bass tips, pay attention whenever a blue name chimes in. Please don't take anything I say as gospel as I'm still very new myself, but this should be more useful than 'use good eq' lol.

if you start from a preset tweaking also do reverse engeneering on that patch in order to understand whats going on.
look at the source (oscilator) waveform that is being used (how does it sound?, why does it sound like that?, what happens if i use other basic waveforms?, etc...) look at the whole signal path the sound is traveling...witch modules/filters/effects are used and most important...why...
Try to make that process a thing of youre own, use what you know, what you like and Experiment!!
have fun

Darkpsy bass = Psytrance bass, with the cut off lower and/or milder envelope modulation on the filter, less sub and (generally speaking) poor EQing to cater for other notes than that one single note.
In the above example the bassline is ringing so much in some of the notes, you can barely tell what the note is. Just a whooly 16th lump of low mid.
I guess people are so used to it its part of the whole style now, but some of the notes are so dissonant, that its this random ringing all over the place...taste in music is subjective, but that is poor engineering in a nutshell.
And before anyone calls me a darkpsy hater, I just hope that the people that make this stuff, catch on to the rest of the scene, cause they have some very good ideas (there are some parts of that track that I really enjoy the space, but unfortunately the kick and bass are very poor), which go down the drain from the extremely poor engineering work. http://soundcloud.com/martianarts

Alright, so I see a sizable chunk of this thread is in the direction of 'psytrance' (rolling 16th note) bassline but to my ears some of the most entrancing basslines are in the dub/downtempo scene...
like these:
I go back to these songs again and again as I think the basslines are just fuckin great - any discussion regarding the construction of this type of sound would be much appreciated.

ACE! after installing and running it, i found myself in 30 minutes of unconsious tweaking, almost like when i was younger and didn't know the synthesis well i ended up with a single bass + kick combo, which ate up to 15% of my CPU (a really huge ammount of processing nowaday!).
sounds good, fast envelopes and constant sound. a small secret that helps make fast bassline is turning reset on VCO and snap on Filter Envelope on.

I know what you are looking for, last night I've done a bass like that (Only sounded better than the one in the example) with Gladiator VST, short decay no release...
Just give it a go and tweak it. You will eventually get there...

all of a sudden it will be electro house with a very vocal feel to it !
Give it a try and see what it sounds like.. Probably not too much change except that it might not feel as fast as with a kbbb.
