usually laptop running Cubase and ,if you are lucky, a sampler
No synths no drumachines ...
-Oh you are a musician?
-Of course!
-What instrument you play?
-Oh... I think I play the mouse
few 'A'rtists left out there
but even they cannot perform as live as they wish cause usually the promoters don't supply them with the requisted equipment for the show ...
bright examples like sub6 at neraida,we should have more parties like this( I didn't like the performance too much,I mean the whole music equipment , lazers and stuff )
ps: I think that trancers in other countries face the same "problem" ... so the healthy land of festivals is the only place for lives

IMO the best part of live acts is that you're gonna listen to the artist newest stuff. He will play only his own tracks and those unreleased ones that stomps you.

And what I wrote in another thread:
IMO there's a bad tradition of characterize a good Live Act when someone is playing flute or violins or Nord or any other instrument...
But what if the artists spent hours or even days in front of their laptops BEFORE THE PARTY, to mix their musics in UNIQUE WAYS, adding samples and effects and even new Bass, Kicks and different Breaks?
IMO the best definition of Live Acts is: The Artists playing their own music, with some of the equipment they use to produce their music (including Computers). Simple as that.

sorry if offtopic but after enjoying seeing several lives i concluded that i'd rather seeing (listering, ok) to a great dj (if you were at secret garden yesterday when sam and then livia was playing you know what i mean) than to a live trance show
back to the topic, several times i hear people say "hey that was a fake live, raja ram was NOT playing the flute, beat hackers did not have this or that equipament on": so question for me still is: *technically* what a live show?
a say technically because "emotionally" the simple fact of seeing your idols (i don't like to use this world for trance artist but can't find a better one) can make a live (even fake) worthwhile

i agree ableton live is good to solve many of the problems of how to do a more "live" set.
But what full-on says is true also ... many artists are spending a lot of time BEFORE the show to create something unique and special for their performance. So it is a unique experience that you wont get from listening to the CD... |

I can enjoy the performances that are almost cmopletely worked out beforehand, and I have in the past; however, those are not live just by the definition of live music.
For me, a show is live when the potential for mistakes is there; doesn't mean they are necessary, but their possibility should be.

Also there's the "Real Fake Live":
When the artist holds an unplugged instrument (such as a guitar) and fake he's playing. And this is ridiculous... Why to FAKE? Just play you own music with your laptop and it's all fine.

i´d say it doesn´t matter at all.
of course i love to have a great show like juno reactor, but most psychedelic artists cannot play live instruments and that´s no problem as lang as they produce good art.
i think it´s much more a matter of commercialism:
so called live acts, whether they really are live or not, usualy get much more money for their "live act" than for djing.
a close friend of mine plays only with his laptop and plays around with the eq´s and some fx - BUT HE´s ACTING LIKE WE ALL SHOULD - IT´s A HOBBY AND WE DON´T REALLY GIVE A FUCK ABOUT MONEY.
so, as soon as there´s no money (or only very little) involved nobody can blame somebody for playing his or her own tracks with a laptop only.
though i always suggest to burn cds and learn mixing ones own music like a dj. |

Too much obsession about "live act". I've seen lots of artists do their live sets with cdj's, and it's ok with me. It's still their music. The bottom line is that there is no real way to really do a live act. It's improv at best. The only thing a party needs is great music and people to dance to it. |
